    NWHL Game Recap – 10/19/2019 – Minnesota Whitecaps v. Boston Pride

    Minnesota Whitecaps (1-0-1 3pts) v. Boston Pride (3-0-0 6pts)

     

    Game Recap:

    Coming into the weekend the undefeated Boston Pride play host to the 2019 Isobel Cup Champion Minnesota Whitecaps, and in this highly anticipated matchup it would not disappoint as both teams would play a very even game against eachother early on as both teams would trade chances. However, it would be Alyssa Wohlfeiler breaking the scoreless tie with a beautiful shot that would beat Whitecaps goaltender Amanda Leveille to give the Pride the 1-0 lead. The rest of the period it would be Leveille and Lovisa Selander playing aggressively in their respective nets and keeping the game close as both teams generated quality scoring chances. At the end of the period Leveille would have stopped 12 out of 13 shots faced while Selander stopped at 14 shots she faced in the first.

     

    In the second period the physicality would pick up as this period would see a total of five penalties with three involving either roughing or body checking. However, when it came to the powerplay the Whitecaps were unable to convert on both of their opportunities, while the Pride woulkd not convert on their lone chance of the period. The Pride would strike once again as McKenna Brand would score her fifth of the season as Jillian Dempsey would feed Brand with a beautiful pass as she would bury it past Leveille to give the Pride the 2-0 lead heading into the second period. For the shots, the Pride would get 18 shots on goal for a total of 31 through 40 minutes while the Whitecaps had 16 shots in the second for a total of 30through 40 minutes.

     

    In the third period it would be Kaleigh Fratkin extending the Pride’s lead to three as she would score from the point in the first 73 seconds of the period. However, the Whitecaps would respond with a couple of solid chances to try to get on the board and cut the deficit, but it would be Selander standing tall for the Pride between the pipes. near the midway mark of the period Lexi Bender would be called for roughing, and while on the powerplay the Whitecaps would give up a few quality shorthanded chances to the Pride but Leveille was up to the task, and then Allie Thunstrom would get a spectacular breakaway opportunity, but Selander would rob her with an even more spectacular save to keep the Pride’s lead at three. Late in the period Thunstrom would get another opportunity and this time she would drill it home as she would score her third of the season and cut the Pride’s lead to two. With the hopes to mount a comeback the Whitecaps would pull Leveille for the extra attacker, but it would not amount to anything as the Boston Pride would defeat the Minnesota Whitecaps 3-1 and remain undefeated with a 4-0-0 record.

    Whale Earn Point In Buffalo

    The Connecticut Whale came in looking to get their first win, on this early campaign. They unfortunately fell to the Beauts in their home opener 2 weeks ago, but there was a lot of positives to take from that game.

    Here is the starting line up for today’s game:

    The Whale hopped out to a quick start in the first period. It would only take 5 minutes for them to get their first goal. The goal coming from Jane Morrisette, it would be her first career NWHL goal. The assist on the play came from Jordan Brickner. It would not take long for Morrisette to add her second career NWHL goal as 2 minutes later, she would double the Whale lead. The assist on this play came from Elena Orlando. About 4 minutes later, the Whale would add a third goal, this time it came from Shannon Doyle, it would be her first goal of the season, assist from Jordan Brickner, her second of the period. It staked the Whale to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.

    Penalties in the first were 2 penalties to the Beauts, to the Whale’s 1. The Whale were the only team to capitalize on a power play in the first, with Shannon Doyle’s goal.

    In the second period, both teams would get into penalty trouble as there were 11 total penalties called. 7 against the Beauts and 4 against the Whale. However the Beauts would begin their climb back into the game as 2 minutes into the frame, the Beauts would get their first goal of the game. It came from Taylor Accursi, with the assists coming from Corinne Buie and Iveta Klimasova. 9 minutes later, the Beauts would get another one back as Lenka Curmova would get one past Sonjia Shelly, with the assist coming form Brooke Stacey. That would be the end of the scoring for the period with the Whale holding a 3-2 lead heading into the third. Both goals for the Beauts in the period came via the power play.

    In the third period, the Whale would get on the board first, as it would be Sarah Hughson who would beat Fujimagari. The assist came from Jane Morrisette, it would be her third point of the game, and it gave the Whale a 4-2 lead. However, this 2 goal lead would be short lived as 2 minutes later, Brooke Stacey would answer right back, assists on the play coming from Erin Gehen and Iveta Klimasova, her second assist of the game. 2 minutes later, the Beauts would get another quick strike, as Kim Brown would tie the game up, the assist on the play came from Lenka Curmova, her second point of the game. The Whale would get a late 5 on 3 power play but failed to capitalize and the game went to overtime.

    Penalties in the third was 4 for the Beauts and 2 for the Whale. Both teams scored a goal while on the power play.

    In the extra session, it would be almost the entire period before we got the decisive goal. After the Whale took a penalty late in the frame, it proved to be costly as Buffalo found a way to capitalize on it. The goal coming from Marie-Jo Pelletier who got it by Shelly.

     

    The Whale can not dwell on this game, as they will play these same Beauts again tomorrow. Puck drop will be at 130p.

    Welcome to the TXHT NWHL Weekend Recap for the Weekend of Saturday, October 12th and Sunday, October 13th, 2019, plus news coming out of the weekend.

     

    Saturday, October 12th, 2019

    Game #1 – Metropolitan Riveters v. Minnesota Whitecaps

    • In Minnesota for their Banner Raising Ceremony, the Whitecaps would light up the Metropolitan Riveters 9-2  after getting four point nights from Jonna Curtis (3g, 1a) and Nicole Schammel (2g, 2a), and a five assist game from Amanda Boulier.

     

    Game #2 – Buffalo Beauts v. Boston Pride

    • In a matchup that saw the Boston Pride dominate the Buffalo Beauts in the shot department, the Pride would double up the Beauts 4-2 in their Home Opener The trio of Carlee Toews (2g, 1a), Lexie Laing (1g, 2a), and Tori Sullivan (2a) would lead the way for the Pride as they took the home victory.

     

    Sunday, October 13th, 2019

    Game #1 – Buffalo Beauts v. Boston Pride

    • In the second game of their weekend series the Boston Pride would light up the Buffalo Beauts for eight goals as they coast to an 8-1 victory Sunday afternoon. The Pride would get multi-point performances from McKenna Brand (3g), Emily Fluke (2g), and Alyssa Wohlfeiler (1g, 2a) to lead the way.

     

    Game #2 – Metropolitan Riveters v. Minnesota Whitecaps

    • In Minnesota the Metropolitan Riveters looked to avenge their 9-2 defeat to the Whitecaps, and that they would in a much more tightly contested contest that would feature the first overtime game of the 2019-20 NWHL season. Rebecca Morse (1g, 1a) would cap off her two point night with the game winning goal in overtime to give the Riveters the 4-3 victory.

     

    News and Notes

    • On Monday, October 14th the Buffalo Beauts announced that they have signed forward/defender Nikki Kirchberger for the 2019-20 season.

    • Kirchberger, a Buffalo native, played for Buffalo State College that saw her be an ECAC West All-Star during her freshman season in 2012-13. In 103 career games for the Bengals, Kichberger would score 31 goals along with 31 assists.

     

    • Buffalo Beuats announced on Tuesday, October 15th that they have signed Team Chinese Taipai goalie Tiffany Hsu for the 2019-20 season.

    • Hsu, the 100th player to sign with the NWHL for the 2019-20 season, posted a .977 Save % during the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Division II Group B. Her performance secured the Chinese Taipei team their first ever gold medal, along with Best Goalkeeper and Most Valuable Player honors.

     

    Player of the Week

    • The NWHL has announced that Boston Pride rookie forward Lexie Laing has been named the VEDA Player of the Week.

    • Laing would kick off a high scoring weekend for the Pride when she would score her career NWHL goal to give the Pride the 1-0 lead over the Buffalo Beauts on Saturday. Laing would follow up with a pair of assists as the Pride would win 4-2. Laing would also pick up an assist on Sunday in Boston’s 8-1 win over the Beauts.

    Riveters Bounce Back And Beat Whitecaps In OT

    Today, the Riveters and the Whitecaps played their second game of their weekend series. The Riveters would look to bounce back from their 9-2 drubbing yesterday.

    The game was a much tighter affair than yesterday. There was great defensive effort from both teams. After some great back and forth action from both teams, and both goalies turning out some great saves, it would take till about a little over the 14 minute mark to get the games first goal. The goal came from the former Riveter, Audra Richards, who nabbed her first goal of the season. Assist on the play coming from Lauren Barnes.

    The lead would be short though as two minutes later, the Riveters would answer. The goal coming off the rush, a great pass coming from Mallory Rushton across the offensive zone. It would be Kendall Cornine who would slot home the shot past Leveille.

    That would be how the period would end with a 1-1 tie. Penalties in the period would be three for the Whitecaps and one for the Riveters. However, neither team would be able to take advantage of that. The Whitecaps also out-shot the Riveters 11-7 in the period.

    In the second period, the Riveters would come out strong again, looking to capitalize on the late goal they scored. They would be rewarded for their momentum by scoring a little over halfway through the second period. The goal would be scored by the Riveters heart and soul of the team, Madison Packer. No assists came from the play.

    The Riveters would keep the lead for a brief time as three minutes later, the Whitecaps would answer back. The goal coming from Amanda Boulier; who came off a great season last year, and is continuing her good play. The assist on the play coming from Allie Thunstrom.

    The period would end with both teams again tied, 2-2. The only penalty in the period came from the Riveters, and the Whitecaps could not take advantage of it. However, the Whitecaps did again out-shoot the Riveters 17-10 in the period.

    In the third period, there was pretty even match-up between both teams, however it would be the Riveters who would strike first blood in the period. The goal came from Kendall Cornine again, it would be her second of the game and it came on the power play.

    The Whitecaps would pour on some more pressure to get the game tied, however the Riveters defense played well and staved off any offensive chances. It would be another 14 minutes before we would get the games next goal. (Yes, both goalies were playing that great.) It would be the Whitecaps who would eventually tie the game up. The goal coming from Allie Thunstrom, who slotted home the goal past Walther’s five hole.

    The late goal would push the game to overtime, and in the extra session, it would only take 35 seconds. A great shot from the circle by Rebecca Morse would elude Leveille’s glove and would give the Riveters the overtime win.

    The Riveters won’t be playing next weekend as they have a bye. The next game for the Whitecaps will be against the Boston Pride on October 19 at 630p in Boston.

    Buffalo Beauts (1-1-0 2pts) v. Boston Pride (1-0-0 2pts)

     

    Game Recap:

    After falling short to the Boston Pride the night before the Buffalo Beauts look to get themselves back into the win column, but it would be the Pride striking early as McKenna Brand would be able to jam the puck past Beauts rookie goaltender Mariah Fuijimagari to make it 1-0 a minute forty-five seconds into the game. Following the goal the Pride would continue to surge against the Beauts, but the Beauts would create an offensive opportunity that would draw a powerplay opportunity. However, the Beauts would squander their opportunity when recently signed Pride forward Emily Fluke would be coming into the Beauts zone and Iveta Klimasova would take her down to end the Beauts powerplay early. Then once on the powerplay Kaleigh Fratkin would send an outlet pass to Brand who would streak in on Fujimagari to score her second of the game. However, the Beauts would respond as Brooke Stacey would drive to the net and a fight to get the puck past Lovisa Selander to get the Beauts back within one, but the McKenna Brand show would not be denied as Brand would score a little over a minute later to complete the hat trick. Then near the end of the period Fluke would tip a point shot from Jenna Rheault to score her first goal as a member of the Pride. At the end of the first period the Pride would be up 4 to 1.

     

    In the second period the Pride would continue their push as Alyssa Wohlfeiler would make a drive to the net and put the puck top shelf over Fujimagari to make it 5-1 for the Pride, and also spell the end of Fujimagari’s game as Beauts Head Coach Pete Perram would send in Kelsey Neumann to tend the Beauts net. Then a little under eight minutes later Emily Fluke would get her second of the game after tipping a shot past Neumann to grow the Pride’s lead to five. Megan Delay would take an unnecessary penalty for the Beauts shortly after, but the Beauts would be up to the task as they would kill the Pride’s powerplay opportunity. But the Pride would still strike once again after the powerplay was over as the how duo of Carlee Toews and Lexie Laing would strike again as Toews would score her first of the game and third of the weekend series to give the Pride the 7-1. However, a late penalty by Tori Sullivan would give the Beauts a late powerplay, but before the period would end while shorthanded Mary Parker would make a great defensive play to give herself a breakaway, but she would be robbed by Kelsey Neumann with a spectacular split legged save to keep the game 7-1 for the Pride heading into the second intermission.

     

    In the third period the Beauts would have thirty seconds left to their powerplay, but the Beauts would struggle to create any momentum with it. But the Beauts would get another opportunity when McKenna Brand took a tripping penalty, however, the Pride would kill this one off as well. The Pride would then take one more penalty as Lexi Bender would be called for body checking, but the Beauts uninspired play would cost them their powerplay as Kim Brown would be called for slashing. After the Pride’s powerplay had expired Jillian Dempsey would get through all of the defenders and Neumann to roof the puck to grow the lead to seven. After the goal both teams would trade penalties and result in some extended four on four hockey, and during the four on four the Pride would come close to extending their lead, but Neumann would find a way to keep the puck out of the net. At the end of the game McKenna Brand would try to get her fourth of the game, but she would be unable to do so before the final buzzer sounded. The Pride would sweep the weekend series two games to none, and will be back in action next weekend as they host the defending Isobel Cup Champion Minnesota Whitecaps.

    Pride Defeat Beauts In Home Opener

    Buffalo Beauts (1-0-0, 2 pts) @ Boston Pride (1-0-0, 2 pts)

    In the second weekend of the NWHL, we got ourselves a pretty good match up with the Buffalo Beauts and the Boston Pride. Both teams were coming off victories in their opening weekend and were looking to continue their momentum early on in the season.

    In the first period, there was complete domination by the Boston Pride. They came out strong in their home opener and really took it to the Beauts, as the Pride out-shot the Beauts by a tally of 19 to 4, however it took until late in the period before the Pride would be able to break through Beauts goalie Mariah Fujimagari. It was a great drive to the net by Carlee Toews, and with the puck loose in front of the net, it was Lexie Laing that would stash home the rebound with about a minute left in the period. The goal would be Lexi Laing’s first goal of her career in the NWHL.

    Penalties in the period were one apiece with no power play goals coming from it with both penalty kills doing their job well.

    In the second period, the Boston Pride came out and continued their momentum from the first period. The Pride would continue to out-shoot the Beauts, as Fujimagari would hold her own until the six and a half minute mark of the period when the Pride would get themselves an odd man rush, and a goal was slotted home by Carlee Toews. Assists on the play came from Lexie Laing and Tori Sullivan. For Toews, it would be her first goal of her career in the NWHL.

    The Pride would continue the pressure on the Beauts, as wave after wave of offensive chances were coming for Boston. It would take twelve minutes before the Pride would get another goal. The goal coming from Christina Putigna, which would be unassisted. It would give the Pride a 3-0 lead. The goal would also be the first NWHL goal for Putigna.

    About a little over a minute later, Carlee Toews would nab her second goal of the game as the assists would once again come from Lexie Laing and Tori Sullivan. The period would mercifully end for the Beauts with the Pride having a 4-0 lead.

    The Pride out-shot the Beauts 16-8 in the second period. There were two penalties called on the Beauts, and one on the Pride, but neither team would be able to score on the power play.

    In the third period, the game finally settled down. Everything was very even, in terms of offensive chances and shots on goal. Both Fujimagari and Lovisa Selander were making great saves. About halfway through the period, Brooke Stacey would get sprung on a breakaway, only to have Chritstina Putigna hook her as she was about to take the shot. A penalty shot was awarded on the play, where Stacey would skate down the middle and put a great shot past Selander to get the Beauts on the board.

    Later on in the period, after some more back and forth action between both teams, Iveta Klimasova would gather the puck at center ice. She looked like she might wait for re-enforcement to come. However she wound up a beautiful slap shot that would beat Selander to cut the lead to two.

    However, that would be the closest the Beauts would get to coming back in the game as the Pride defense shut them out the rest of the way to secure the 4-2 win for Boston.

    The Pride out-shot the Beauts again in the third period 10-8. The only penalty called in the period went against the Pride but the Beauts could not capitalize on the power play.

    It will be a quick turnaround for both teams, as they will square off against each other tomorrow at 230p.

    Game Recap:

    After raising their Isobel Cup Banner the Minnesota Whitecaps went right to work against the visiting Metropolitan Riveters as Jonna Curtis would throw a centering pass in front of the net, but it would deflect off of a Riveters and through the legs of goaltender Sam Walther to give the Whitecaps the 1-0 lead 49 seconds into the game. However, the Riveters would respond as Kate Leary would take advantage of a loose puck in the crease and would bank it into the net past Amanda Leveille to to tie the game at one a piece. The Riveters would not stop there as Cailey Hutchison would feed Rebecca Morse in the slot area and Morse would get the puck past a sprawling Leveille to give the Riveters the 2-1 lead, but the Whitecaps would respond as Jonna Curtis would get a bouncer past Walther to tie the game up at two a piece and her second of the game. Then on a 5 on 3 advantage for the Whitecaps Allie Thunstrom would get the puck past Walther to give the Whitecaps the 3-2 lead going into the first intermission.

     

    In the second period the Whitecaps would respond 57 seconds into the period while shorthanded as Nicole Schammel would score her first career NWHL goal to make it 4-2. Then while playing 4 on 4 Meaghan Lorence would score her first of the season off of a rebound to give the Whitecaps a 5-2 lead. Lorence would strike again, this time while shorthanded to give the Whitecaps the 6-2 lead and would end Sam Walther’s night as the Riveters head coach Ivo Mocek would have no choice but to pull Walther and put in Dana DeMartino. The Whitecaps would not slow down though while on the powerplay Jonna Curtis would net her third of the game to complete the hat trick and give the Whitecaps the 7-2 lead.

     

    In the third period Jonna Curtis would be at it again as she would tuck the puck past an already down Dana DeMartino to score her fourth goal of the game and widen the Whitecaps lead to six. Then later in the period Sydney Baldwin would score her first of the season with a beautiful rip from the faceoff circle to make it 9-2 Whitecaps. After a late rush by the Riveters the Whitecaps would hold their ground and keep the Riveters off the board to secure the 9-2 victory to open their 2019-20 season.

    Today in the NWHL there were a pair of announcements including a free agent signing.

     

    Today the Boston Pride announced that they have signed All Star forward Emily Fluke for the 2019-20 season.

    The Minnesota Whitecaps have announced that they will be doing their Banner Raising on Saturday, October 12th before they take on the Metropolitan Riveters.

     

    The Whitecaps banner raising and game will precede the Minnesota Wild’s home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins later that night. The Wild are supporters of the Whitecaps and provide far ranging support including having the Whitecaps play all of their games and hold all of their practices at TRIA Rink, and with their extensive resources the Wild support the Whitecaps with marketing, promotions, communications, social and digital media, community relations, and so much more.

     

    All players will partake in the 50 percent cut of revenue from league sponsorship and media deals. Plus they will also receive 15 percent of revenue from apparel sold with their name on it.

    Former Whale Captain Signs With Boston

    The big news coming from the NWHL today, former Connecticut Whale Captain Emily Fluke has signed with the Boston Pride.

    The Pride have added a really good player. On top of being an NWHL All Star last year for the Whale, in the 16 games that she played, she scored 3 goals and added 8 assists for 11 points for the season. She also added a playoff goal in a game against the Riveters.

    Plus, she was a premier player in her rookie year too! In the 16 games she played that season, she scored 4 goals and added 7 assists for 11 points. She lead the team that year in every major offensive category!

    So in total, Fluke has played 32 regular season games in the NWHL, she has 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 2 seasons.

    Welcome to the TXHT NWHL Weekend Recap for the Weekend of Saturday, October 5th and Sunday, October 6th, 2019, plus news coming out of the weekend.

     

    Saturday, October 5th, 2019

    Game #1 – Buffalo Beauts v. Connecticut Whale

    • The Beauts would get goals from three different scorers as they would down the Whale in their home opener at Danbury Arena 3-1 in what was a tightly contested matchup.
      • Lenka Curmova would score the first goal of the season for both the Beauts and the NWHL. Curmova becomes the first Slovakian to score in the NWHL.
      • Curmova’s goal was also the first powerplay goal of the season, and her first career NWHL goal.
      • Beauts would also get goals from Brooke Stacey (first career NWHL goal), and Corinne Buie (empty netter).
      • The Whale’s lone goal would come from Grace Klienbach.
      • In net Mariah Fujimagari would make 29 saves on 30 shots for the Beauts for her first career NWHL win, while Sonjia Shelly would make 13 saves on 15 shots for the Whale in her first career NWHL game.

    Game #2 – Boston Pride v. Metropolitan Riveters

    • In a game that had three 5 on 3 opportunities, the Pride would get a pair of goals from Jillian Dempsey to lead them past the Riveters 4-2.
      • The Pride would also get goals from Tori Sullivan (first career NWHL goal), and McKenna Brand (empty netter).
      • The Riveters would get goals from Kendall Cornine (first career NWHL goal) and Collen Murphy (powerplay goal, first career NWHL goal).
      • The Pride would have one 5 on 3 opportunity, while the Riveters had two attempts with the 5 on 3 woman advantage.
      • In net Lovisa Selander would make 23 saves on 25 shot for her first career NWHL win for the Pride, and Sam Walther would make 36 saves on 39 shots in her Riveters debut.

    News and Notes

    • The Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL and the Connecticut Whale announced that on February 22nd, 2020 that the Sound Tigers will be hosting the first ever AHL and NWHL doubleheader with the Whale.

    • Per the release, on Saturday, February 22nd at Webster Bank Arena, the Whale will host the Boston Pride in NWHL action at 2p ET, then at 7p ET the Sound Tigers will host the Hershey Bears. The Sound Tigers are also offering a combined ticket for both games in the Sound Tigers/Whale doubleheader for $25 which are available for purchase now.

     

    Player of the Week

    • Buffalo Beauts defender Lenka Curmova has been named the first VEDA NWHL Player of the Week for season 5 of the NWHL.

    • Curmova became not only one of the first two Slovakian born players to appear in an NWHL, but she also is the first Slovakian to score a goal in the NWHL. Cumova would be named the VEDA Player of the week not only for the history that she made, but also for her all around play in the Beauts 3-1 victory over the Whale on Saturday, October 5th.
