    Winnipeg Jets (40-24-4 84 pts) v.s. Washington Capitals ( 41-21-7 89 pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals concluded their short two game home stand tonight against the Winnipeg Jets. Tonight’s game was a battle between a pair of forty win teams that are currently leading their respective divisions. Washington got on the board first as a result of a Nicklas Backstrom goal from John Carlson and Michal Kempny. Shortly, Winnipeg would tie the game up on a goal from Mathieu Perreault. The Capitals eventually killed off a pivotal 5 on 3 Power Play after committing back to back penalties. The first period would end with a 1-1 tie between the two teams. In the 2nd period, the Capitals took the lead as Carl Hagelin came out of the penalty box and scored on a beautiful lift pass from Nic Dowd. The Capitals would take a 2-1 lead going into the 3rd period. The 3rd period became very interesting as there was a coach’s challenge by Winnipeg to determine if the puck had crossed the line for a goal after an emphatic no goal call by the referees. After further review, the call would stand as no goal. The Capitals killed off a penalty with 2:35 left in the game after a Dmitri Orlov tripping call. Lars Eller then sealed the game with an empty net goal from Tom Wilson and Dmitri Orlov. The Capitals currently are on a 7 game win streak and close out the short home stand with a 2-0 record.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals are back home after a short 3 game road trip against Metro Division rivals. Tonight the Caps square off against another division rival in the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are coming into this game having a very depleted lineup with eight of their regulars out due to injuries or illnesses. The Caps scored early with a 5 on 5 goal from Andre Burakovsky. Each team had power play chances and neither team could convert on the man advantage. The second period was a very tight and defensive one. There were a few grade A chances on both sides with neither team being able to convert. In the 3rd period, the Caps were able to add another goal on the Power Play courtesy of Nicklas Backstrom. Lars Eller put the icing on the cake with a short handed empty net goal at the 19:02 mark. The Capitals are currently on a 6 game winning streak.

    Washington Capitals (38-21-7 83pts) v. Philadelphia Flyers (32-26-8 72pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals would continue their road trip with a short train trip to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers, and in the early stages of the game both teams would share chances in a track style back and forth, but it would be the Capitals striking first as Alex Ovechkin would feed the puck to Tom Wilson while on his knees for Wilson’s 19th goal of the season. Then later in the period while going down the wing Brett Connolly would rip a shot past Brian Elliott that would seem to have hit the crossbar, but during the TV timeout the play would be reviewed in Toronto and deemed a goal as Connolly got the puck past Elliott and hit the goal cam with the puck completely crossing the line thus giving the Capitals a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission.

To start the second period the Capitals would bring the domination as early in the period while on their first powerplay of the game it would be an Ovechkin snipe from the circles that would go five hole on Elliott. Then mere minutes later it would be Andre Burakovsky with a beautiful snipe to chase Elliott from the net and bring in Cam Talbot, but the Capitals would welcome him with that same domination as Nicklas Backstrom would net the first shot against Talbot to make this a 5-0 game. The Capitals would primarily control the play the rest of the period, but with 11.8 seconds left in the period Philippe Myers would score his first career goal to get the Flyers on the board.

To start the third period it would be the Flyers to get on the board ten seconds into the period as Claude Giroux would net his 20th of the season. The Flyers would pick up the play after scoring their second goal and as a result the Capitals would start chasing the game to which would then lead to an Andrew MacDonald point shot to get tipped by Scott Laughton to make this a 5-3 game, and have the Flyers trail the Capitals by only two goals.

    Game Recap:

For the Washington Capitals, they finally get to return home but it would be spoiled right away as Chris Kreider would score 21 seconds into the game to give the New York Rangers a 1-0 lead. However, the Capitals would respond late in the period as both Nicklas Backstrom and Michal Kempny would score to give the Capitals 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

Then in the second period it would be a penalty affair that would see Tom Wilson score on the powerplay for his 17th of the season to give the Capitals a 3-1 lead. But then later in the period Brady Skjei would do a blast from the point to beat Pheonix Copley to cut the Capitals lead to one going into the second intermission.

The Rangers would open the period the same way they started the game with a goal 21 seconds into the period, this time by Jimmy Vesey with a knuckler from the point to tie the game. The Capitals would respond with back to back goals from Nic Dowd and Backstrom to give them their two goal lead back. However, on a Carl Hagelin hooking penalty the Rangers would get a weird bounce off of Vladislav Namestnikov for the powerplay goal and reduce the Capitals lead to one again. The with 30 seconds left in the period Skjei would score his second of the game to tie this game at 5 a piece and send the game to overtime.

In overtime, this one would almost go the distance but it would be Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov connecting for the game winner with 40 seconds left in what was a mayhem filled sequence.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals would start off hot as they would force the play in the Vancouver Canucks zone early as TJ Oshie would charge the net for the Nicklas Backstrom rebound to get the Capitals the first goal of the game. The goal would also be assisted on by Alex Ovechkin who would be come the highest scoring Russian player in NHL history.

However, 39 seconds later Evgeny Kuznetsov would be called for hooking, but the Capitals would kill of the penalty. The Capitals would get a powerplay opportunity as well, but could not convert on it. The Capitals would dominate the period which featured them out shooting the Canucks 18 to 5.

This was a lackluster period. Not a whole lot really to talk about this period outside of the penalty shot opportunity for Bo Horvat, but Braden Holtby was up to the task to shut Horvat down to keep the 1-0 lead.

The Capitals would start off the third period the same way they way started the game by crashing the net, this time with Brett Connolly banking in the shot to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead. However, the Canucks would respond with their first goal of the game when Markus Granlund would tip in a Antoine Roussel pass past Holtby. But the Capitals would respond in kind as the Capitals would create more chaos in front of the Canucks net to get the puck past Jacob Markstrom to make it a 3-1 lead. The Canucks would dispute the goal claiming it was hit with a high stick, but the referees declared it a good goal by Jakub Vrana after further review. Elias Pettersson would score with 8 seconds left in the game with the goalie pulled, but it would be too little too late for the Canucks as the Capitals hold on to win 3-2.

    Washington Capitals (27-16-6 60pts) v. Toronto Maple Leafs (29-17-2 60pts)

    Game Recap:

For the majority of the first period it was a major snoozer until the final couple of minutes when the Capitals got a powerplay when Patrick Marleau would be called for hooking. Nicklas Backstrom would net the powerplay goal to give the Capitals the 1-0 lead, but it would not last long as right away Nazem Kadri would poke the puck past Braden Holtby to tie the game at 1.

Steve’s Analysis: Leafs had some jump at the beginning of the period but soon began to settle in. Trading shot for shot in one of the most boring periods I’ve seen. Backstrom scored on a Marleau penalty to make it 1-0 but a miscue by Holtby allowed Kadri to tie the game up with 24 seconds remaining.

The second period would have a better start for the Capitals as the TJ Oshie would feed Alex Ovechkin on the rush and Ovechkin would rip it from the top of the faceoff circle past Frederik Andersen to give the Capitals the 2-1 lead. After some more back and forth between the two teams, the Maple Leafs would capitalize after a great defensive play by William Nylander that would lead to Nakita Zaitsev scoring his first of the season to tie the game at 2. Then Ovechkin would take a bad cross checking penalty to give the Maple Leafs the powerplay, which Auston Matthews would score on to get himself back on the score sheet while on the powerplay to give the Maple Leafs a 3-2 lead going into the 2nd intermission.

Steve’s Analysis: Leafs looked to be having one of those games again. But Zaitsev with an nice point shot tied it up and Matthews with a deadly studder step and snipe to break the slump and make it 3-2 Toronto heading to the 3rd.

The third period would be all Maple Leafs the first 10 minutes of the period which would feature two more goals from Kadri to net the hat trick and give the Maple Leafs a three goal lead. The Capitals would get one back when Matt Niskanen bombed one from the point, but it would too late for the Capitals as Mitch Marner would then net the empty netter to seal this game for the Maple Leafs and give the Capitals their seventh straight loss going into the All Star Break.

Steve’s Analysis: Leafs came to play in 3rd not letting Andersen’s great game go to waste. Kadri notched the Hat trick, along with 3 point for his line mate Nylander and Marner sealed the deal with an empty netter off of a Ovechkin giveaway in the neutral zone.

    Washington Capitals (27-13-5 59pts) v. Nashville Predators (27-16-4 58pts)

    Game Recap:

To start this game, there was some good pace between both the Washington Capitals and Nashville Predators, but it would be the Predators who would strike first when they pick off a pass from Tom Wilson to Alex Ovechkin and Mattias Ekholm sends Viktor Arvidsson streaking into the Capitals zone for the first goal of the game. The Capitals would respond well with a couple shifts, but their aggressiveness caused them to give up a few too many odd man rushes and the Predators would capitalize as Nick Bonino would score to make it 2-0 on a 2-1 break with Colton Sissons. The rest of the period would show some more good back and forth, but the Predators were very good at creating odd man rushes, and breaking up the Capitals plays in the offensive zone.

To start the second period, the Predators would strike fast as Arvidsson would deflect a PK Subban point shot for his second goal of the game. Then some frustration would boil over as Jakub Vrana would get called for Slashing in the neutral zone behind the play to give the Predators the first powerplay of the game. Once the penalty was killed the Capitals would surge with a really strong shift that featured Wilson almost scoring but getting the post instead, and eventually drawing a penalty against the Predators for their first powerplay of the game. On the powerplay the Capitals would make the penalty killers move around and scramble, and then it would be a point blast from John Carlson that would go wide on purpose for Nicklas Backstrom to tip in for the powerplay goal. The Capitals would keep that fire burning as they would dominate at 5 on 5 for the next few shifts, and draw another tripping penalty on the Predators to go back on the powerplay. However, a horrible zone entry by Backstrom would result in Ryan Johansen chipping the puck up to Arvidsson who would score his second breakaway goal for the hat trick. Then on a one on one play into the zone, despite Jonas Siegenthaler’s best efforts, Rocco Grimaldi would make a really good move and an even better backhand shot to beat Pheonix Copley to make it 5-1. Then in the wanning seconds of the second period, Nick Bonino would tip in a point from Mattias Ekholm to make it 6-1.

The 3rd period happened. Cool if we don’t talk about it? Yea… Thanks for understanding.

    Washington Capitals (26-12-4 56pts) v. Boston Bruins (25-14-4 54pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals came into Boston looking to extend their win streak to three, but how they would start the game with an early Jonas Siegenthaler holding penalty would force the Capitals to kill the Bruins powerplay opportunity. Then after a strong kill the Capitals would get on the board when Jakub Vrana would score his 15th of the season off of a breakaway pass from TJ Oshie. The Bruins would put the pressure on the Capitals which would cause Michal Kempny to take a tripping penalty, but once again the Capitals would shut down the Bruins powerplay. Braden Holtby had a spectacular first period which saw him stop all 17 Bruins shots.

The Bruins would start the period pressuring the Capitals, but then the Capitals would get a very good shift from their second line that would draw a penalty against Patrice Bergeron. However, the Capitals would not be able to do much with their first powerplay opportunity. Then Lars Eller would challenge Brad Marchand after being chirped at by Marchand, but Marchand would cowardly turtle when Eller dropped his gloves thus getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and another Bruins powerplay. The Capitals would kill the penalty, and then on a rush Alex Ovechkin would be tripped by Brandon Carlo to give the Capitals their second powerplay opportunity of the game. The Capitals would fail on the powerplay, and then the Bruins would take that momentum to tie up the game with Ryan Donato’s 6th of the season. However, it would not remain tied as Tom Wilson displayed great patience behind the net to find Ovechkin for his 31st goal of the season.

The Bruins started the period with a powerplay due to a late penalty against Brett Connolly, but the Capitals would do a great job of killing the penalty. However, the Capitals would shoot themselves in the foot with a too many men on the ice penalty that would see David Krejci tie the game for the Bruins on the powereplay, but 69 seconds later Nicklas Backstrom would respond to retake the lead for the Capitals. Late in the third period the Bruins would pull goalie Jaroslav Halak, but then Ovechkin would nab the empty netter for his second of the game. The Capitals would end the Bruins 5 game winning streak and grow their win streak to 3 games.

    PP                 0/0                 1/1

    Analysis:

This was a good period for the Capitals. They scored early and consistently throughout the period. They hustled to win battles, and they had bounces go their way.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to keep it going and not lose focus. They still need to do a good job of clogging up the neutral zone, and containing the Red Wings speed as they can burn anyone with it. Play these last 40 minutes and really choke the life out of the Red Wings.

    Second Period:

Capitals Goal – 9:05 – Alex Ovechkin (24) from John Carlson (27) and Nicklas Backstrom (26)

Red Wings Penalty – 9:30 – Frans Nielsen 2 minutes for Interference

Capitals Penalty – 16:18 – Dmitry Orlov 2 minutes for Hooking

    Hits                 13                  06

    PP                   0/1                  2/2

    Analysis:

Another good period for the Capitals. They continued to clog up the neutral zone and containing the Red Wings speed. They did let the Red Wings have a few more opportunities, but not as many dangerous ones like in the 1st period. Capitals are definitely making the most of their opportunities.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to stay focused and not let the Red Wings any opportunities to get back into this game. Full 20 minutes to finish out this game.

    Third Period:

Red Wings Goal – 1:03 – Dylan Larkin (13) from Gustav Nyquist (21) and Nick Jensen (5)

Failed Coach’s Challenge for the Capitals for Goalie Interference

Capitals Goal – 9:33 – Alex Ovechkin (25) from Christian Djoos (4) and Nicklas Backstrom (28)

Red Wings Goal – 16:42 – Gustav Nyquist (8) from Justin Abdelkader (6)

    End of 3rd – DET – 2         WAS – 6

    Shots              37                   25

    Faceoffs        35                    32

    Hits               18                     12

    PP                 0/1                    2/2

    Analysis:

Good third period. Capitals let off the gas a little bit which allowed Detroit two goals, but overall a solid period to close out the game.
