    Washington Capitals (47-24-8 102pts) v. Florida Panthers (35-32-12 82pts)

    Game Recap:

In their final road game of the regular season, the Washington Capitals visit the Florida Panthers with a chance to clinch the Metropolitan Division title for the fourth season in a row. However, the Panthers would have different ideas as they would strike first to put the Capitals in an early 1-0 deficit on a Frank Vatrano goal.

Then in the second period, the Panthers would continue to push the play as Jonathan Huberdeau would bank in the loose puck past Pheonix Copley to make it 2-0. Then while the Capitals were on the lone powerplay of the period Vincent Trocheck would blast a shot five hole on Copley to give the Panthers a three goal lead while shorthanded. And to end the period for the Panthers it would be former Capital Troy Brouwer getting the goal off of a beautiful Aleksander Barkov pass to make it 4-0 going into the second intermission.

Halfway thru the third period the Capitals would come alive as Evgeny Kuznetsov would get the Capitals on the board with the hopes of a late comeback victory. Then after a failed powerplay opportunity the Capitals would strike again as Nicklas Backstrom would be the recipient of a TJ Oshie pass in front of the net to cut the Panthers lead to two. And Oshie would not be done there as with Copley pulled for the extra attacker, Oshie would find an open Jakub Vrana to cut the Panthers lead to one. However, despite their best efforts, Vincent Trocheck would ice the game for the Panthers with an empty net goal in the final minute to win the game 5-3 for the Panthers.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers for an NBC matinee in their final meeting of the regular season. Early in the first period it would be the Capitals scorimg first as an Alex Ovechkin pass would be deflected to Nick Jensen who would shoot it from the point with Tom Wilson deflecting it past Briam Elliott for the 1-0 lead. The Capitals wouldvgain two powerplay opportunities, but would not be able to use them to build on their 1-0 lead going into the intermission.

In the second period it would be the Flyers dominating the play against the Capitals for the first half of the period, but it would be the Capitals who would strike once again with a deflection in front of the net this time Travis Boyd deflecting Matt Niskanen’s point shot. However, the Capitals would continuously go to the penalty box, and the third time would be the charm as Jakub Voracek would score for the Flyers on their third powerplay opportunity on a TJ Oshie holding call.

In the third period, it would be a tightly contested affair, but a Jakub Vrana breakaway courtesy of Brett Connolly would ice the game for the Capitals as they would sweep the regular season series with a 3-1 victory over the Flyers.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals begin a four game road trip tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins. This classic and intense rivalry continues as the first period featured some heavy hitting and tight defensive play between the two teams. However, the Capitals struck first at the 19:27 mark on a Jakub Vrana shot which was beautifully placed under the bar. The goal was set up on a beautiful passing sequence from Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie. The Capitals would end the first period with a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the momentum between the teams exchanged from the Capitals towards the Penguins. The Capitals took a 2-0 lead on Jakub Vrana’s second goal of the game and 21st on the season. However, the Penguins scored three goals within a span of a minute and forty-eight seconds. Two of the three goals were scored by Sidney Crosby who now has thirty three goals on the season. The other goal was scored by Jake Guentzel. After two periods, the Pittsburgh Penguins would take a 3-2 lead.

The third period saw the Penguins adding onto their lead on a Power Play goal by Phil Kessel. This period featured milestone moments from both teams. Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins notched the 1,000th point plateau in his career. Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals recorded his 1,200th point in his career on a power play goal by John Carlson. The Penguins would add an empty net goal from Jared McCann to seal the victory for the Penguins and end the Capitals seven game win streak.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals head to Nassau Coliseum for the first time to take on the New York Islanders, and it would be the Islanders that would get on the board early as Tom Kuhnhackl would score in the opening minutes of the game on a very casual breakaway due to a blown offside by the officials. Then Alex Ovechkin would take a very blatant interference penalty, but the Capitals would kill the penalty off.

A very uneventful second period outside of a Brett Connolly penalty, and some heavy hits on both ends of the ice.

Unlike the second period, the third period would be fast and hectic in the first half of the period. The Capitals would strike early as Jakub Vrana would battle in front of the net and knock in the rebound to tie the game at one, then right away on the powerplay it would be Alex Ovechkin batting the puck and getting a lucky bounce to get his 45th of the season and give the Capitals a 2-1 lead. This would be followed with 3 penalties that would start with a Capitals powerplay, and then end in a Capitals powerplay. Then to ice the game for the Capitals, with Thomas Griess pulled TJ Oshie would clear the puck out of the zone and without paying attention Josh Bailey accidentally shot the puck into his own net to give the Capitals a 3-1 victory.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals look to end their season long six game homestand with a victory, and it would be an early penalty by Michael Amadio that would give the Capitals the first power play opportunity of the game. The Capitals would not need much time as they would swarm the Los Angeles Kings as Alex Ovechkin would score his 38th goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. However, the Kings would respond quickly when Derek Forbort made an amazing pass to Austin Wagner to tie the game at one. The Capitals would get another power play opportunity when Alec Martinez would be called for holding, but the Capitals would not convert. The Kings would then get their first power play opportunity when Evgeny Kuznetsov would be galled for hooking, but the Capitals would hold the Kings shotless on the power play. The Capitals would eventually get the lead back when Brett Connolly would get his own rebound and roof it over Jonathan Quick, but it would be a Dmitry Orlov hooking penalty that would give the Kings a chance to tie the game up at two as Tyler Toffoli would score on the powerplay.

The Capitals would start the period by killing off the late Brett Connolly hooking call, but they would get hemmed into their own zone as the Kings would tire the Capitals and gain the lead for the first time this game when Oscar Fantenberg would blast a one timer for his second goal of the season. However the Capitals would respond quickly as Evgeny Kuznetsov would score off of a Tom Wilson rebound to tie the game at three a piece. The Capitals would then get the lead back as they would crash the net and create chaos for Quick and the Kings defense as Christian Djoos would poke the puck with one hand on his stick for his first goal of the season. the Capitals would not let up there as Michal Kempny and Jakub Vrana would connect to get Quick out of position and Vrana his 17th of the season.

For the third period both teams would play a more contained style of game that would feature both Austin Wagner and Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring their second goal of the game for their respective teams. However, it would be the Capitals holding on and winning 6-4 to end their six game homestand with a 4-1-1 record.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals would start off hot as they would force the play in the Vancouver Canucks zone early as TJ Oshie would charge the net for the Nicklas Backstrom rebound to get the Capitals the first goal of the game. The goal would also be assisted on by Alex Ovechkin who would be come the highest scoring Russian player in NHL history.

However, 39 seconds later Evgeny Kuznetsov would be called for hooking, but the Capitals would kill of the penalty. The Capitals would get a powerplay opportunity as well, but could not convert on it. The Capitals would dominate the period which featured them out shooting the Canucks 18 to 5.

This was a lackluster period. Not a whole lot really to talk about this period outside of the penalty shot opportunity for Bo Horvat, but Braden Holtby was up to the task to shut Horvat down to keep the 1-0 lead.

The Capitals would start off the third period the same way they way started the game by crashing the net, this time with Brett Connolly banking in the shot to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead. However, the Canucks would respond with their first goal of the game when Markus Granlund would tip in a Antoine Roussel pass past Holtby. But the Capitals would respond in kind as the Capitals would create more chaos in front of the Canucks net to get the puck past Jacob Markstrom to make it a 3-1 lead. The Canucks would dispute the goal claiming it was hit with a high stick, but the referees declared it a good goal by Jakub Vrana after further review. Elias Pettersson would score with 8 seconds left in the game with the goalie pulled, but it would be too little too late for the Canucks as the Capitals hold on to win 3-2.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals came into Boston looking to extend their win streak to three, but how they would start the game with an early Jonas Siegenthaler holding penalty would force the Capitals to kill the Bruins powerplay opportunity. Then after a strong kill the Capitals would get on the board when Jakub Vrana would score his 15th of the season off of a breakaway pass from TJ Oshie. The Bruins would put the pressure on the Capitals which would cause Michal Kempny to take a tripping penalty, but once again the Capitals would shut down the Bruins powerplay. Braden Holtby had a spectacular first period which saw him stop all 17 Bruins shots.

The Bruins would start the period pressuring the Capitals, but then the Capitals would get a very good shift from their second line that would draw a penalty against Patrice Bergeron. However, the Capitals would not be able to do much with their first powerplay opportunity. Then Lars Eller would challenge Brad Marchand after being chirped at by Marchand, but Marchand would cowardly turtle when Eller dropped his gloves thus getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and another Bruins powerplay. The Capitals would kill the penalty, and then on a rush Alex Ovechkin would be tripped by Brandon Carlo to give the Capitals their second powerplay opportunity of the game. The Capitals would fail on the powerplay, and then the Bruins would take that momentum to tie up the game with Ryan Donato’s 6th of the season. However, it would not remain tied as Tom Wilson displayed great patience behind the net to find Ovechkin for his 31st goal of the season.

The Bruins started the period with a powerplay due to a late penalty against Brett Connolly, but the Capitals would do a great job of killing the penalty. However, the Capitals would shoot themselves in the foot with a too many men on the ice penalty that would see David Krejci tie the game for the Bruins on the powereplay, but 69 seconds later Nicklas Backstrom would respond to retake the lead for the Capitals. Late in the third period the Bruins would pull goalie Jaroslav Halak, but then Ovechkin would nab the empty netter for his second of the game. The Capitals would end the Bruins 5 game winning streak and grow their win streak to 3 games.

    Philadelphia Flyers (15-21-6 36pts) v. Washington Capitals (25-12-4 54pts)

    Game Recap:

To start the game both the Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers would test each other out, and get a feel for the game, but it would be off a defensive zone faceoff that the Flyers would win but Jakub Vrana getting to the puck first and taking it all the way down tot he offensive zone and throwing the puck on net for Tom Wilson to tip in to get the first goal of the game. Then Andre Burakovsky would take an ill advised offensive zone penalty for hooking, but the Capitals would shut down the Flyers powerplay and prevent them from taking a shot on goal. However, the Flyers would strike back when Michal Kempny would make a bad pass out of the zone that would be picked off and lead to Jakub Voracek tying the game at 1 a piece. The period would end with game tied at one a piece, but one of the bigger points is the fact that the Flyers dominated the Capitals both in shots and in the faceoff circle. The Capitals would only generate 4 shots in the opening period.

To start the second period, there would be a lot of back and forth between the two teams until Robert Hagg would be called for hooking against Evgeny Kuznetsov. However, on the powerplay the Capitals would not generate much with the opportunity. the Capitals would respond not that much longer as Lars Eller would let a shot of from the point that TJ Oshie would tip in front of the net to give the Capitals the lead. Then not the long after getting the lead, Vrana would cause a turnover and turn on the wheels as he does a great individual play to create a turnover and then convert it into a goal for the Capitals. The Capitals would keep the pressure going as ALex Ovechkin would draw a tripping penalty on Ivan Provorov, and the Capitals would strike in the final seconds of the powerplay as Vrana would score his second goal of the game. In the final minute of the second period, Brooks Orpik would get called for roughing which would give the Flyers a powerplay to start the third period. Biggest flaw in the Capitals game right now is in the faceoff circle as the Flyers are manhandling them in that category.

The Capitals would start the period by killing the remainder of Orpik’s penalty, but not long after, Radko Gudas would lay a clean hit on Nic Dowd which Devante Smith=-Pelly would step up and fight Gudas. However, the Smith-Pelly would gain an additional two minutes for instigating to give the Flyers another powerplay. After the Capitals would kill off this penalty, Wilson would get called for slashing, but the Capitals would kill that one as well. Then Travis Konecny would be upset over a hit by Alex Ovechkin and would then take a slashing penalty as a result. On this powerplay, the Capitals would get some looks, but would not capitalize on the powerplay. The Flyers would respond though after a failed clearing attempt by Ovechkin as Wayne Simmonds crashed the net and was able to jam one home to cut the Capitals lead to 2. After this goal would be scored chaos would ensue as when Tom Wilson thought he had a empty net goal to seal the deal for the Capitals, it would be ruled offsides after a Coach’s Challenge, but it would also result in Shayne Gostisbehere penalty that would upset the Flyers and result in Simmonds getting a 10 minute misconduct. However, the Capitals would not be on the powerplay long as Evgeny Kuznetsov would be called for hooking, and then while 4 on 4 with the goalie pulled Claude Giroux would score to inch the Flyers closer, but then Oshie would get the empty netter to ice this win for the Capitals.

This was not the greatest period for the Capitals. They were overwhelmed by the Coyotes speed, and there were too many turnovers as the Capitals had 6 compared to the Coyotes 1. This game could be worse, but Pheonix Copley has been playing very well to keep the Capitals in the game.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to play a better overall game and contain the Coyotes speed as that is one of the biggest reasons as to why the Coyotes are forcing all of these turnovers. Also the Capitals need to play much better in their own zone.

    Second Period:

Coyotes Penalty Shot – 1:16 – Richard Panik – Miss (Brett Connolly – Throw Object at Puck)

Capitals Goal – 5:27 – Jakub Vrana (9) from Brett Connolly (13) and Evgeny Kuznetsov (19)

Coyotes Goal – 6:58 – Lawson Crouse (6) from Nick Cousins (6) and Jordan Oesterle (5)

Capitals Penalty – 11:25 – Matt Niskanen 2 minutes for High Sticking

Coyotes Penalty – 13:07 – Jakob Chychrun 2 minutes for Tripping

Capitals Goal – 16:00 – Matt Niskanen (4) from Travis Boyd (6) and Pheonix Copley (1)

    Analysis:

This was a very back and forth period for the Capitals. It was good as they got the first and last goals of the period to make this game 2-2 going into the 2nd intermission. However, the Capitals are still chasing the Coyotes.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to do a better job at containing and combating the Coyotes speed. Also the Capitals need to do a better job in the faceoff circle.

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty Shot – :16 – Jakub Vrana – Miss (Kevin Connauton – Hooking on Breakaway)

Capitals Goal – 15:18 – Andre Burakovsky (5) from Matt Niskanen (10) and Dmitry Orlov (8)

Capitals PPG _ 19:57 – Alex Ovechkin (21) from unassisted

    End of 3rd – WAS – 4         ARI – 2

    Shots              29                   29

    Faceoffs        20                    31

    Analysis:

This was a fast moving 3rd period that started with a good break by Jakub Vrana drawing a Penalty Shot, but unable to capitalize, but then Andre Burakovsky netting the eventual game winner late in the 3rd to give the Capitals the win.
