  • News and Notes: October 4th, 2018

     

    These are your news and notes covering the NHL for Thursday, October 4th, 2018.

    There was one final preseason match yesterday and that pitted the Edmonton Oilers and Cologne Sharks (Kolner Haie) which Edmonton would go on to win 4-3 in overtime in Germany.

    Last night was the kickoff for the 2018-19 NHL season and four games happened.

    • The Washington Capitals faced off against the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena. In a pregame ceremony, the Capitals raised their Stanley Cup champions and went on to route the Bruins in a 7-0 win. TXHT has your coverage from last night’s game here.
    • The Montreal Canadiens took on the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scoatiabank Arena. Toronto would go on to defeat Montreal in a 3-2 victory in overtime. Canadiens rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi would go on to register his frist NHL point with an assist. Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews would score the game-winner 1:01 into the overtime frame.     • The Anaheim Ducks defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-2 at SAP Center. Anaheim rookie Max Comtois scored 49 seconds into the contest, the sixth-fastest for a rookie in NHL history.
    • A new era for the Vancouver Canucks began with a decisive 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place. The Canucks were playing without Henrik and Daniel Sedin since they announced their retirement last season. Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson scored his first NHL goal in this contest. With that goal, Pettersson became the third teenager to score a goal in his NHL debut.

    There were no preseason contests yesterday.

    Today is the first day of the regular season in the NHL and there are four contests taking place.

    • The Washington Capitals will raise their Stanley Cup Championship banner tonight in a pre-game ceremony when they take on the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena. TXHT has the preview of the game here.
    • The Montreal Canadiens take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, which will mark the official debut of John Tavares. Tavares joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent over the summer. For TXHT’s preview of this match-up, please check out Steve Gardiner’s game preview

    • The Calgary Flames face off against the Vancouver Canucks. For the Canucks this marks the first season without Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who retired last season, since the 1999-2000 season.
    • The Anaheim Ducks face off against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center. For the Sharks this will mark the official debut of Erik Karlsson, who joined the team after a trade

    In NHL news today:

    • The Buffalo Sabres announced that Jack Eichel has been named team captain.
    • The Washington Capitals announced that Jayson Megna has been placed on waivers.
    • Montreal Canadiens head coach Claude Julian announced that Karl Alzner and Tomas Plekanec will be healthy scratches tonight. This will end Karl Alzner’s consecutive-games played streak at 622, which is the fourth longest activer streak in the NHL and the 12th longest in NHL history.
    • The NHL announced all 31 teams opening night 23-man rosters earlier today
    • Former NWHL player and United States captain Meghan Duggan married three-time Canadian women’s gold medalist Gillian Apps two weeks ago. Duggan played for the Boston Pride and the Buffalo Beauts. Gillian Apps would play in the CWHL with the Brampton Thunder (now Markham Thunder).

    These are your news and notes for Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018…

    There was one preseason contest that happened yesterday. The New Jersey Devils faced off against SC Bern in the NHL Global Series Challenge at PostFinance Arena in Bern, Switzerland. New Jersey went on to win the contest 3-2 in overtime.

    There are no preseason contests today.

    In NHL news:

    • Final 23-man rosters must be submitted to the NHL offices by 5 p.m., ET today.
    • The Washington Capitals received their Stanley Cup championship rings in a private ceremony last night. The Washington Capitals also released the Stanley Cup with the new engravings, representing the 2017-18 Washington Capitals.For more information on the ceremony, please go here.
    • The Washington Capitals also released the schedule for their opening night ceremonies tomorrow.
    • The Washington Capitals also claimed Dmitrij Jaskin off of waivers from the St. Louis Blues today.
    • Washington also announced that Michal Kempny has been put on Injured Reserve and Travis Boyd has been put on Long-Term Injured Reserve.
    • The Seattle contingent is expected to hear back today if the NHL Board of Governors will go ahead in December for an expansion vote. Gary Bettman, the NHL commissioner, say that the NHL executive committee is recommending expansion in Seattle.
    • Carolina Hurricanes goalie is expected to miss a couple of weeks due to an injury. In a corresponding move, the Hurricanes have claimed Curtis McElhinney off of waivers.
    • The Professional Hockey Writers Association announced that Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan was the winner of the 2018 Red Fisher award. The Red Fisher award recognizes the top beat writer from the 2017-2018 season, as voted on by her peers.

  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: October 1, 2018

     

    Here are your news and notes covering the NHL for Monday, October 1, 2018.

     

    There were four preseason contests that happened yesterday.

      • The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the San Jose Sharks with a 5-3 win at T-Mobile Arena. Tomas Nosek would score two of the Golden Knights three shorthanded goals. Max Pacioretty would also score the other shorthanded goal. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury registered 33 saves to give Golden Knights six wins out of seven on the preseason campaign. Erik Karlsson scored his first goal for the Sharks, which were 2-for-6 on the power-play. Sharks goalie Martin Jones recorded 27 saves in the contest.
      • The Nashville Predators defeated the Carolina Hurricanes with a 5-4 in overtime at PNC Arena. Nashville’s Ryan Johansen scored the GWG 21 seconds into the overtime frame, his second of the game. Hurricanes goalie Scott Darling recorded 20 saves before leaving the game in the second period with a lower-body injury. Petr Mrazek came in for relief for Carolina and recorded 10 saves. Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros registered 14 and 16 shots respectively for Nashville.
      • The Washington Capitals defeated the St. Louis Blues with a 5-2 victory at Capital One Arena. Washington Capitals forwards Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie scored goals 49 seconds apart early in the third period. Ovechkin scored his fourth goal of the preseason 38 seconds into the third period to give Washington a 2-1 lead and then Oshie scored at 1:27. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby recorded 21 saves. Tom Wilson was given a match penalty for his hit on Blues F Oskar Sundqvist at 5:22 in the second period. There is more to come on that later.
      • The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Dallas Stars in a 6-5 victory at American Airlines Center. Colorado’s Nathan Landeskog had two goals and assist in this contest. Mikko Rantanen registered one goal and two assists, Tyson Jost and Matt Calvert each had two assists, and Colorado goalie Seymon Varlamov recorded 32 saves.

    • As discussed yesterday, Washington Capitals F Tom Wilson will have an in-person hearing for his hit on Oskar Sundqvist yesterday. For our coverage, please go here and here.
    • NHL rosters for opening night on Wednesday must be submitted by 5 p.m. ET tomorrow (October 2nd).
    • The Edmonton Oilers traded Jakub Jerabek to the St. Louis Blues for a sixth-round draft pick in 2020

     

     

    • Scott Hartnell announced his retirement today from the NHL. Hartnell played 17 seasons and registered 707 points in 1,249 games with three teams.

     

     

    • Shea Weber was announced as the 30th captain in Montreal Canadiens team history today. Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher were also announced as the alternate captains.

     

     

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs finalized their 23-man roster (13 forwards, eight defenceman and two goalies) today.

     

     

    • 19 years ago today, the Edmonton Oilers officially retired Wayne Gretzky’s number.

     

     

    • The New York Islanders unveiled their new third jerseys today. These thirds are identical to the last few third jerseys they have had over the past few seasons.

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Connor Carrick to the Dallas Stars for a conditional seventh-round draft pick which will turn into sixth rounder if Carrick plays at least 50 games.

     

     

    • Radim Vrbata announced his retirement today from the NHL.

     

     

    • The Montreal Canadiens acquired Brett Kulak from the Calgary Flames, who will report to the Laval Rocket of the AHL. In return, the Calgary Flames, will get Matt Taormina and Rinat Valiev.

     

     

    In the NWHL, the Connecticut Whale announced that they have signed Meeri Räisänen. Räisänen, a Finnish goalie, joins Russian national team goalie Maria Sorokina to give the Whale a strong and talented goaltending tandem.

  • Tom Wilson to have hearing for hit in final preseason game.

    Tonight it was announced that Tom Wilson has been offered an in person hearing for his hit to the head of St. Louis Blues player Oskar Sundqvist.

     

     

    Wilson was assessed a match penalty for an Illegal Check to the Head. Now after looking at some footage with alternate angles I have some thoughts going into this hearing, but first let’s look at some footage first:

    Now I’ve watched this back a few times and there are some points that I need to point out. First off Wilson is in a glide, and makes no forward strides towards Sundqvist to initiate the hit. Secondly, Wilson does not leave his feet when delivering the hit on Sunqvist.
     

    Now as mentioned in the tweet above by Elliotte Friedman of “Hockey Night in Canada”, there are two things that need to be looked at. One being was the head the point of contact? In all angles that we have seen it’s hard to decipher if the answer is yes or no. Sundqvist is playing the puck and is in a more slouched position, so it makes his head more prone for contact, but it doesn’t mean that the head was the point of contact.

    The next thing that Friedman brings up is was the hit avoidable? The answer to this in my opinion is maybe. It looks like Wilson had Sundqvist locked in for a shoulder on shoulder hit and was already committed to the hit. Unfortunately while Sundqvist was playing the puck his positioning changed very slightly, so it’s tough to say at that precise moment the contact could be avoided.

    Now it should be noted that because Wilson was offered an in person hearing, this means that his suspension could be more than five games per the CBA.

    New Jersey Devils goalie Cory Schneider will miss the season opener due to offseason hip surgery, when the Devils take on the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Global Series game in Scandnavium, Gothenburg, Sweden Saturday, October 6.

     

    New Jersey’s Nico Hischier returned home to Sweden to prepare for the Devils final preseason game on Monday. New Jersey takes on SC Bern at PostFinance Arena in Bern, Switzerland, also a match-up for the NHL’s Global Series Challenge.

     

    On Monday, the New York Islanders will officially unveil their new alternate jerseys.

    These are your news and notes covering the NHL and the NWHL for Saturday, September 29th, 2018…

     

    In NHL preseason action last night there were seven contests that took place. Here are brief recaps on select games:

    • The Columbus Blue Jackets took on the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nationwide Arena and would win this contest 7-6. Blue Jackets Artemi Panarin (two goals and two assists), Cam Atkinson (one goal and three assists), and Zach Werenski (four assists) were the noteworthy players with points in the contest. Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky recorded 23 saves.
    • The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury recorded 26 saves in the contest. Ryan Reaves and Brayden McNabb registered the two goals for the Golden Knights. The Kings were 0-for-5 on the power-play and the Golden Knights were 0-for-2
    • The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings with a 6-2 win at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto’s Jake Gardiner would score the first of three straight power-play goals for the Maple Leafs to give Toronto a 2-1 lead at 12:47 of the second period. John Tavares would score his fifth goal of the pre-season with a PPG at 14:58 and Patrick Marleau would score the third straight power-play goal at 15:25. Frederik Anderson would register 23 saves for Toronto.
    • The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Washington Capitals in a 5-4 overtime at Capital One Arena. Carolina’s Sebastian AHo would score the game winner 19 seconds into the overtime frame with his second goal of the contest. Hurricanes LW Teuvo Teravainen registered four points (one goal and three assists), which is 5-0-0 during the preseason thus far. Alex Ovechkin (two goals), Evgeny Kuznetsov (two assists), John Carlson (one assist), Aaron Ness (one assist), Tom Wilson (one assist), Lars Eller (one assist), Andre Burakovsky (one goal), and Jayson Megna (one goal) all registered points for the Capitals in the contest.
    • Rasmus Dahlin scored his first goal of the preseason to lift the Buffalo Sabres over the New York Islanders, 5-4, in a contest at General Motors Place in a contest that took place Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Dahlin, the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, gave the the Sabres the 3-1 with that goal at 3:42 in the second period.
    • The St. Louis Blues defeated the Dallas Stars with a 3-1 win at Enterprise Center. Blues Jaden Schwartz registered one goal and two assists in the contest. Ryan O’Reilly would score 31 seconds into the second period and Schwartz scored 1:30 into the third period. Blues Vladimir Tarasenko would score the third goal, an empty-netter, at 19:53 in the third period. St. Louis was 0-for-5 on power-plays and Dallas was 0-for-3.
    • The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Minnesota Wild with a 4-3 overtime victory at Pepsi Center. Avalanche Mikko Rantanen scored a PPG 1:29 into the extra frame, which was upheld after a video review.

    In NHL news…

    The Montreal Canadiens confirmed that 18-year-old Jesperi Kotkaniemi will begin the season with the team.

    In NWHL news, there was a contest for the Champions Cup earlier today. This contest pitted the NWHL’s Isobel Cup champion, Metropolitan Riveters and the SDHL’s Luleå Hockey. The Champions Cup weighs 25 pounds and is gold and silver to represent the founding leagues of the NWHL and SDHL. The cup is engraved with “Champions Cup” in eight different languages.

    In this contest, Luleå Hockey defeated the Metropolitan Riveters at Hobey Baker Rink by the score of 4-2. Noora Tulus scored late which ended up being the difference maker in the game.

    Luleå’s Michelle Karvinen scored the first goal of the contest just 27 seconds into what was a penalty-filled second period. This lead for Luleå would be erased at the 14:16 mark of the second period with a goal by Riveters forward Kelly Nash, who is also the assistant coach at Princeton. This goal was the product of a deflected shot off of Alexa Gruschow.

    There were eight penalties that occurred during the second period but the penalty issues would continue for Luleå going into the third. With two players in the penalty box, Karvinen finished on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush by putting the puck behind the 2018 Isobel Cup MVP Katie Fitzgerald to regain a one-goal lead. 51 seconds later, the Riveters would tie the game again at 2 with a goal from Riveters newcomer Kristin Lewicki.

    Noora Tulus would score at 12:05 in the second to give Luleå the lead for good at 3-2. Emma Nordin would score an empty-net goal with seconds left in the game to seal the 4-2 win for Luleå.

    Michelle Karvinen was later named the MVP of the Champions Cup. For the Riveters, this marked Shelley Picard’s first as the captain. Kristin Lewicki, Alexa Aramburu, Lexi Slattery, Audra Richards, Chelsea Ziadie, and Fiona McKenna also all donned the Riveters red for the first time.

    The Riveters have only one week to begin the defense of their Isobel Cup championship following this contest. The Riveters open the season with games against the NWHL’s newest franchise, the Minnesota Whitecaps, October 6 and 7 at TRIA Rink.

    These are your news and notes covering the NHL for Friday, September 28th, 2018:

     

    In preseason action last night…

    • The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Arizona Coyotes in a 3-2 overtime win at Rogers Place. Connor McDavid recorded six shots on goal, a game-high, and had two goals. McDavid entered training camp with a goal to shoot the puck more and he was doing that in this contest.
    • Johnathan Toews recorded his third goal in three preseason games in a Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 defeat against the Ottawa Senators. Toews scored 20 goals last season, a career NHL-low.
    • The New Jersey Devils defeated the Winnipeg Jets in a 5-3 win at Bell MTS Place. New Jersey goalie Keith Kinkaid recorded 21 saves in the contest.
    • The New York Rangers concluded their preseason slate with a 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center. The Rangers had a 3-0 lead, however New York was being outshot 16-2. The Raagers would allow goals by Ivan Provorov and James van Riemsdyk, to make it a 3-2 Rangers lead. Kevin Hayes would seal the victory at 1:35 left in the game with an empty-net goal.
    • The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Florida Panthers with a 6-2 victory in a contest that took place at Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida. Mathieu Joseph, Tampa Bay’s fourth round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, scored twice. Joseph also recorded an assist and leads Tampa Bay with seven points (three goals and four assists) in five preseason games. Joseph is still showing that he should be on the team’s opening-night roster.

    In NHL news….

    The Stanley Cup is currently being updated with the names of the Washington Capitals, who will be on a new band on the Cup.

     

    The Capitals announced that there will be an outdoor viewing party for the Stanley Cup championship banner raising ceremony on Wednesday evening when the Washington takes on the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena.

     

    The NHL and NHLPA have jointly contributed $25,000 toward the Ottawa storm relief efforts. This donation will be used for food purchases for those in enned and to cover costs for any crisis counseling.

    Here are your news and notes covering the NHL for September 27th, 2018…

     

    In preseason action last night, seven contests took place:

    • Montreal Canadiens F Jesperi Kotkaniemi has one assist and two shot on goal in just under 14 minutes of ice time. The Canadiens would lose 5-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Bell Centre Wednesday night. This could have been just enough for Kotkaniemi, the third overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, to make the roster. Kotkaniemi, 18, has three points (one goal and two assists), a plus-5 rating and four shots on goal in five preseason contests.
    • The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Boston Bruins 3-2 in overtime at TD Garden. Filip Zadina scored on a one-timer just 24 seconds in the overtime frame, his second goal in five preseason contests. Zadina is also attempting to become the first Red Wing player to play as an 18-year-old since Martin Lapointe in the 1991-92 season. Zadina, who is a native of the Czech Republic, was on loan to QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads last season and as such is eligible for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
    • The injury to Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry could be an opportunity for Max Comtois to make the Ducks roster. Comtois, the second round pick of the 2017 NHL Draft, scored two goals in Anaheim’s 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Honda Center. Comtois’ second goal was set up by Isac Lundestrom, the 23rd pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Lundestrom is also looking to make the Ducks roster with Ryan Kesler unliekly to begin the season as he recovers from offseason hip surgery.
    • Ryan Suter looks to be in season form after the Minnesota Wild’s 4-3 victory of the Winnipeg Hets at Xcel Energy Center. Suter registered 21:22 of on-ice time and had two shots on goal in his first action since he broke his right ankle on March 31.

    St. Louis Blues Robert Bortuzzo has a hearing today for elbowing Washington Capitals D Michal Kempny in Washington’s 4-0 win Tuesday night.

    After a hearing with the DoPS, Robert Bortuzzo has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and one regular season game for elbowing Washington Capitals D Michal Kempny

     

    There is a report of Philadelphia Flyers F Jori Lehterä being a suspect in a Finnish cocaine ring.

     

    TXHT’s and Last Word on Hockey contributor Armand Klisivitch wrote an article about Jesperi Kotkaniemi expecting to start the season with the Montreal Canadiens.

     

    The Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan wrote an article today about Jakub Vrana and his plans to keep his top-six spot but also how the Capitals have a void in high-end prospects that are after him.     In preseason action last night there were seven contests that took place.

    • The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 6-0 at Rogers Place Tuesday night. Oilers Ty Rattie recorded a hat trick and Cam Talbot made 35 saves. Jesse Puljujarvi scored twice and Connor McDavid recorded three assists for the Oilers as well. Rattie has seven goals in the preseason, the most in the NHL.
    • The Florida Panthers defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 3-2 victory at Amalie Arena. Panthers Aleksander Barkov scored the game-winner, his first goal of the preseason, at 12:31. Panthers goalie, James Reimer, registered 27 saves in the contest. Lightning goalie, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 25 saves. Tampa Bay F Nikita Kucherov would leave the game in the first period with a lower-body injury.
    • The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 at Kraft Hockeyville USA in Clinton, New York. Blue Jackets LW Artemi Panarin registered three points, two assists and a power-play goal, in the contest. Panarin’s PPG came at 6:31 of the third period, giving Columbus a 3-2 lead.
    • The Washington Capitals defeated the St. Louis Blues with a shut out last night, winning 4-0. Capitals goalie Pheonix Copley recorded 42 saves in the contest. Shane Gersich, Nathan Walker, Madison Bowey, and Chandler Stephenson would all score for Washington in the contest.

    Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry had surgery to repair injuries to his MCL and his meniscus. Perry should be out of action for about five months.
