Mike’s STH Xperience – Capping the Oil

Welcome to Mike’s Season Ticket Holder (STH) Xperience!

This season is my first one as a Season Ticket holder for the Washington Capitals, and in place of doing Caps Game Recaps, I’ll be sharing my experience being a STH during the 2024-25 season. Here I’ll be sharing all of the photos that I take during pregame warmups, along with any FB/IG Reels and TikToks I create at the games.

I will also be doing this for any other games I may go to, whether it’s in Hershey for the Bears, or at other NHL venues for games.

The Washington Capitals are back at home as they take on the Edmonton Oilers.

    #Caps50Facts

A 3rd Round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 1996, defenseman Tom Poti signed with the Washington Capitals in the summer of 2007, and spent the last five seasons of his NHL career with the Capitals. Poti recorded 11 goals and 75 points in 230 games with the Capitals.

    Thoughts on the Game

Back home the Washington Capitals kick off Hockey Day in America with a matchup with the Edmonton Oilers, and this one was just as fun as the game the day before in Pittsburgh. It was another blowout by the Capitals, and this time we got not one, not two, but three goals from Alex Ovechkin. So it was another fun game to watch this weekend. However, I just need to say this.

I’ve been watching and going to games since I was a little kid, and never in my life have I seen a team pull their goalie to allow a player for the other team to score to complete the hat trick. Completely mind blowing, but hey, I’m cool with it since it was Ovechkin.

We’re back from the break, and Mike is traveling to Pittsburgh to see the Washington Capitals visit the Pittsburgh Penguins.

    #Caps50Facts

On November 22nd, 2005, rookie sensations Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby faced off for the first time as the Washington Capitals visited the Pittsburgh Penguins. Crosby recorded a goal and an assist in the Penguins 5-4 victory over the Capitals. Ovechkin recorded an assist in the game.

Ovechkin recorded his first goal against the Penguins on January 25th, 2006, but Crosby’s goal and three assists led the Penguins to an 8-1 victory. Ovechkin’s first win against Crosby came on March 8th, 2006 when he recorded a goal and two assists in a 6-3 victory.

Alex Ovechkin earned the 2005-06 Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year over Crosby, but in the 2009, 2016, and 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Crosby defeated Ovechkin to go on to eventually win the Stanley Cup all three years. In 2018, Ovechkin’s time finally came as the Capitals defeated the Penguins in the second round enroute to their first Stanley Cup.

    Thoughts on the Game

One of the nice things about this little road trip is that I get to do it on a weekend, and I get to do it with my friend Chris, who joined me in Toronto for the Maple Leafs/Wild game last month, and I get to check off another NHL arena off of my list.

PPG Paints Arena is a pretty cool arena. The team store is much bigger than the one at Capital One Arena and has more variety in selections, too. The hot dog I had was ok, but it could have been much better, but I love the fact that they sell candy there.

Now for the game. Boy, was that a good way to come back from the break. An 8 goal blowout of a rival team on their ice definitely was fun. The effort the Capitals gave against the Penguins was a solid one, and getting scoring from all across the board was great to see, especially since they weren’t playing that great going into the break.

The only thing missing from this game was an Alex Ovechkin goal, but to see him and Sidney Crosby play against each other in Pittsburgh was a sight to see after seeing them play back in DC so many times.

  • NHL Stars of the Week – Hagel Takes Top Honors

NHL Stars of the Week – Hagel Takes Top Honors

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of February 3rd through 9th.

First Star – Brandon Hagel (LW – TB)

    • Hagel – who will represent Canada at this week’s 4 Nations Face-Off – led the NHL with 4-4—8, all at even strength, in four contests to lift the Lightning (31-20-4, 66 points) into third place in the Atlantic Division via four straight wins over division opponents. He helped Tampa Bay sweep back-to-back games versus the Ottawa Senators, one of the teams ahead of them in the Atlantic entering the week, potting the tiebreaking goal early in the third period of a 4-3 victory Feb. 4 and scoring the game-winner (his third of 2024-25) in a 5-1 triumph Feb. 6. Hagel then registered his third career four-point performance, all of which have come this season (also Oct. 22 at NJD: 3-1—4 and Nov. 25 vs. COL: 0-5—5), with 2-2—4 in a 6-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings Feb. 8. He closed the week with a pair of assists, his 16th multi-point outing of the campaign, in a 5-3 triumph over the Montreal Canadiens Feb. 9 at Bell Centre – the site of the first four games of the 4 Nations Face-Off, including the tournament opener this Wednesday (CAN vs. SWE, 8 p.m. ET, TNT, truTV, Max, SN, TVAS). The 26-year-old Hagel ranks second on the Lightning and 16th in the entire NHL with 26-36—62 through 55 total appearances this season. He also places among the 2024-25 League leaders in shorthanded assists (t-1st; 4), shorthanded points (t-1st; 6), even-strength goals (3rd; 24), even-strength points (5th; 49), goals (t-9th; 26) and plus/minus (t-10th; +24).

Second Star – Thatcher Demko (G – VAN)

    • Demko stopped 64 of the 65 shots he faced across three appearances, going 2-0-0 with a 0.46 goals-against average, .985 save percentage and one shutout as the Canucks (26-18-11, 63 points) moved into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference via a perfect week. He earned his ninth career shutout and first of 2024-25 with 25 saves in a 3-0 victory against the Colorado Avalanche Feb. 4. Demko then turned aside 33 shots, including a combined 17 in the third period and overtime, in a 2-1 triumph versus the San Jose Sharks Feb. 6. The 29-year-old Demko, who denied all six shots he saw before exiting Vancouver’s 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Feb. 8, owns a 6-6-3 record, 2.87 goals-against average and .891 save percentage through 17 total contests this season.

Third Star – Matthew Tkachuk (LW – FLA)

    • Tkachuk – another participant in the 4 Nations Face-Off – scored in all three of his outings, totaling 4-3—7, to extend his goal streak to six games (Jan. 29 – Feb. 8: 7-6—13) as the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers (34-20-3, 71 points) maintained a three-point cushion atop the Atlantic Division. He found the back of the net once in a 6-3 loss to the Washington Capitals Feb. 4. Tkachuk then posted 2-1—3, including the tiebreaking goal with 11.8 seconds remaining in regulation, in 3-2 victory at his hometown St. Louis Blues Feb. 6 before adding 1-2—3, his seventh three-point performance of the season, in a 5-1 triumph over the Ottawa Senators Feb. 8. The 27-year-old Tkachuk sits second on Florida in goals (22), assists (35) and points (57) through 52 total games in 2024-25.

For the first time ever, the Washington Capitals host the Utah Hockey Club.

    #Caps50Facts

Drafted 58th overall in the 1991 NHL Draft, forward Steve Konowalchuk became the first player born and raised in Utah to play in the NHL. Konowalchuk recorded 146 goals and 196 assists for 342 points in 693 games played for the Washington Capitals across 13 seasons.

    Thoughts on the Game

While dealing with the flu for the first time in my life, I wasn’t going to let it keep me from seeing the Utah Hockey Club face the Capitals for the first time ever in DC.

This game definitely did not go according to plan for the Capitals as they gave up two quick ones to Utah, but a positive for the Capitals was they were a perfect 2 for 2 on the power play, but at the same time, they were 0 for 1 on the penalty kill at the same time.

Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin had amazing games. I was personally rooting for a 4 goal game for Ovechkin to avenge his injury the last time these two teams saw each other, but a hat trick of assists is just as fun to watch too. People tend to forget that despite the chase for Wayne Gretzky, Ovechkin is quite the playmaker too.

Disappointing the Capitals lost in the shootout, but we have two weeks to relax and get ready for the playoff stretch, which will be exciting to see how the Capitals do.
