    Claude Giroux would register his 481st career assist, moving into second place for the most assists in Flyers history.

    For the second straight match-up between the two teams, the Philadelphia Flyers would go on to beat the Rangers by a shutout.

     

    BUFFALO 3, Montreal 2 (OT)

     

    The Buffalo Sabres would defeat the Montreal Canadiens to win their eighth consecutive game, the fourth such occasion of winning eight consecutive games.

     

     

    Montreal’s Andrew Shaw would go on to score his seventh goal of the season in the overtime loss to the Sabres.

     

     

    NY Islanders 4, NEW JERSEY 3 (OT)

     

    The Islanders Mathew Barzal would register the game-winner in overtime to defeat the New Jersey Devils 4-3.

     

    For the Devils, Keith Kinkaid had 31 saves on 35 opportunities.

    WASHINGTON 3, Detroit 1

    In the Washington Capitals contest against the Detroit Red Wings, Washington’s Tom Wilson, Michal Kempny, and Alex Ovechkin would score.  For Detroit, Andreas Athanasiou, would register the lone goal.

    The Minnesota Wild would score four unanswered goals to get the win, and improve to a record of 14-7-2.

    The Anaheim Ducks Rickard Rakell would score his fifth regular-season overtime goal, tying Scott Niedermeyer.  Rakell is one regular-season overtime goal away from tying Corey Perry and Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne for second place with six.

     

     

    VEGAS 2, Calgary 0

     

    Vegas Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury would go on to register his 52nd NHL career shutout in the Golden Knights 2-0 win.  He is one win away from tying Pekka Rinne for third place on the all-time list for shutouts by an active NHL goaltender.

     

    COLUMBUS 4, Toronto 2

    With the Columbus Blue Jackets win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, they now have sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division.

    The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Chicago Blackhawks last night by a 4-2 score.

    Tampa Bay is 7-0-1 against the Blackhawks since their match-up in the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, compiling seven straight wins in that eight game span.

    Jordan Martinook registered a hat trick for the Carolina Hurricanes in the big win last night.

    San Jose’s Joe Thornton recorded his 231st game with multiple assists in the regular season, one shy of tying Joe Sakic for 10th place all time.

     

     

    Also, Joe Thornton would go on to play in his 1,500th NHL game last night and was honoured in a pre-game ceremony last night in San Jose.

    There were 14 games on the NHL schedule yesterday.

     

    NEW JERSEY 5, Montreal 2

    Kyle Palmieri became the eighth player in franchise history to have at least 12 goals in the first 20 team games of the season.

    Montreal Canadiens Max Domi has 11 consecutive games with at least a point, tied for fourth with two other players for the longest such streak as a member of the Canadiens.

     

    NY RANGERS 5, NY Islanders 0

     

    Filip Chytil became the seventh teenager to score a goal in at least five consecutive team games since the 2005-06 season last  night.

     

    Rangers G Alexandar Georgiev became the 16th different goalie to register a shutout for the franchise and the first in over 40 years against the Islanders when Doug Soetaert achieved the mark.

     

     

    PITTSBURGH 5, Dallas 1

     

    The Pittsburgh Penguins recorded points for the 15th straight time against Western Conference games last night against the Dallas Stars.

     

     

    DETROIT 3, Boston 2 (OT)

     

    Andreas Athanasiou would score twice in the contest, including the game-winner, to snap a seven game losing streak against the Boston Bruins in the win last night.

     

     

    TAMPA BAY 7, Florida 3

     

    Mike Hoffman would register another game in where he registers at least one point for the 17th consecutive contest, the fifth most for a player while a member of a new team.

     

     

    WASHINGTON 4, Chicago 2

     

    The Washington Capitals won their eighth consecutive game against the Chicago Blackhawks in home contests last night.

    Carolina Hurricanes Justin Williams became the ninth player in NHL history to record at least 100 goals and a Stanley Cup with two different franchises in the win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night.

    John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs became the fifth player in franchise history and the first in the NHL’s Modern Era, since the 1943-44 season, to have at least 11 goals in the franchises first 11 road games last night.

    In the three-goal win over the St. Louis Blues, the Nashville Predators would score two shorthanded goals, the sixth such occurrence.  It was also the first time that feat happened since March 13, 2018 against the Winnipeg Jets.

     

     

    Vegas 3, ARIZONA 2 (OT)

     

    Vegas Golden Knights Max Pacioretty registered his 11th overtime goal last night in the win over the Arizona Coyotes.  The 11th overtime goal is tied with three other players for the fourth most in the regular season since the 2008-09 season.

     


    CALGARY 6, Winnipeg 3

     

    The Calgary Flames became the fourth team in history to score five or more goals in the first period of consecutive games last night in the win over the Winnipeg Jets last night.

     


    ANAHEIM 4, Vancouver 3

     

    Anaheim Ducks G John Gibson won his 100th NHL career contest in a 25 saves performance.

    Gibson reached the 100 win mark faster than anyone else in the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim/Anaheim Ducks 25-year history of the franchise.

     


    Colorado 7, LOS ANGELES 3

     

    Colorado Avalanche G Seymon Varlamov would win his 200th NHL career game in the win over the Los Angeles Kings last night.

     

     

     

    Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen would register two assists to bring his total two 26 on the season, one behind Michel Goulet for the most in franchise history in the teams first 21 games.

     

     

    Today there are no games on the NHL schedule.

     

    NHL action will resume tomorrow with 15 games on the schedule, kicking off with the NHL Thanksgiving Showdown between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers at 1 p.m. ET.

     

     

     

    In NHL news…

     

    Newly inducted Hall of Famer Martin St. Louis was on hand in Tampa Bay for the ceremonial puck drop before the Tampa Bay Lightning took on the Florida Panthers last night.

     

    Nashville Predators Nick Bonino would play in his 500th NHL career game last night against the St. Louis Blues.

     

     

    Wednesday’s contest marked the second time in which 12 contests were won by the home teams.

    Detroit 3, NEW JERSEY 2 (OT)

    The Detroit Red Wings had another comeback in their contest against the New Jersey Devils yesterday afternoon.  The Red Wings came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the contest..

    Tampa Bay 6, PHILADELPHIA 5 (OT)

    Brayden Point had consecutive multi-goal games for the first time in his career and joined three other players in Tampa Bay Lightning history to have such a mark.

    Despite the loss in overtime, the Philadelphia Flyers would score four goals in the span of 6:04 to tie the game against the Lightning.  Philadelphia also became the ninth club to score four goals in the final 10 minutes of the contest to tie a game.

    Buffalo 3, MINNESOTA 2

    The Buffalo Sabres would go on to defeat the Minnesota Wild and with the win, the Sabres now have 26 points in their last 2mi0 contests and the second best 20 game start since the overtime point era started.

    OTTAWA 6, Pittsburgh 4

    Ottawa Senators Mark Stone had a game with two goals on four shots to help lift the Ottawa Senators past the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 6-4 win.

    Matt Duchene would also reach the 500 point mark with a two goal, one assist performance in the win as well.

    NY RANGERS 4, Florida 2

    New York Rangers Filip Chytil became the only teenager in the long-history of the NY Rangers to score in three straight games in the win over the Florida Panthers yesterday.

    Columbus 4, CAROLINA 1

    Columbus Blue Jackets Cam Atkinson registered the fifth career hat trick in Blue Jackets history with the rout of the Carolina Hurricanes last night.

    Montreal 3, VANCOUVER 2

    Elias Pettersson scored to be the third player in Vancouver Canucks history to register 11 goals in 16 games in the Canucks 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens yesterday.

    Montreal Canadiens Max Domi became the tenth player to have a nine game point scoring streak in their first season with the franchise.

    NASHVILLE 5, Los Angeles 3

    Los Angeles Kings Dion Phaneuf became the seventh player this season to play in his 1,00th NHL game in the Kings 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators last night.

     

    Boston 2, ARIZONA 1

    Boston Bruins Forward Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson would score his first career goal in the Bruins win over the Arizona Coyotes.

     

    CALGARY 4, Edmonton 2

    Elias Lindholm would score twice to help the Calgary Flames double up the Edmonton Oilers in a 4-2 win.


    SAN JOSE 4, St. Louis 0

    San jose Sharks D Erik Karlsson scored his first goal as a member of the franchise and helped shutout the St. Louis Blues 4-0.

    Joe Pavelski would also score in the contest and this would also be his fourth consecutive game with a goal.

     

    NWHL

     

    The lone NWHL contest of yesterday pitted the Boston Pride against the Buffalo Beauts.

     

    Boston’s Jillian Dempsey and Gigi Marvin would both score twice to give the Pride a big win over the Buffalo Beauts at Warrior Ice Arena last night.

     

    Dempsey scored her goals in the first period and then sealed the win for the Pride with her second goal of the contest with 6:40 left in the third period.

     

    The Boston Pride would play strong defensively in this contest, giving up Buffalo’s lone goal at the 7:40 mark in the second.  Hayley Scamurra would get the goal for Buffalo.

     

    Hayley Scamurra has four goals and four assists on the season.

     

    Pride G Katie Burt registered 25 saves on 26 shots and Beauts G Nicole Hensley would have 22 saves on 26 shot attempts.

     

    With the win, Boston is now in second place in the NWHL standings at 3-1 with the Minnesota Whitecaps at 6-0, who return to NWHL action in two weeks.

     

    The Buffalo Beauts now sit at 2-3-0 in the standings, good for third place.  The Metropolitan Riveters are at 1-5-0 and rounding out the standings is the winless Connecticut Whale at 0-3-0.

     

    The Boston Pride and Buffalo Beauts will face off again at 2:30pm today at Warrior Ice Arena.

    Buffalo 2, WINNIPEG 1 (SO)

     

    Buffalo Sabres Jeff Skinner scored in the contest, his eighth goal since November 1st, to give the Sabres the shootout win over the Winnipeg Jets last night.

     

    Los Angeles 2, CHICAGO 1 (SO)

     

    Los Angeles G Calvin Petersen registered 34 saves in the contest and would turn aside two shots in the shootout give Petersen his first NHL win in the Kings contest over the Chicago Blackhawks.

     

    Washington 3, COLORADO 2 (OT)

     

    Alex Ovechkin has 681 goals (regular-season and playoffs combined) to tie Dino Ciccarelli for 17th place all-time.

     

    Nicklas Backstrom scored the game-winner just 22 seconds into the overtime to give the Washington Capitals the 3-2 win in Denver last night.

    St. Louis 4, VEGAS 1

     

    St. Louis Blues Ryan O’Reilly has at least one point in 11 out of the last 12 games and leads the Blues with 23 points on the season.  O’Reilly also scored two goals in the contest.

    For the second time in franchise history, the Toronto Maple Leafs ended up sweeping the California road-trip in the Maple Leafs overtime win over the Anaheim Ducks.

    Patrick Marleau scored his 539th career goal, passing Keith Tkachuk for 32nd place on the all-time list.

    The Chicago Blackhawks went on to shutout the St. Louis Blues 1-0.

    Blackhawks G Corey Crawford turned aside all 28 shots he faced to snap the Blackhawks eight-game losing streak in the win.

    Chicago’s Duncan Keith played in his 1,014th career game, and now has sole possession of fourth place on the Blackhawks all-time list.

     

    WINNIPEG 3, Washington 1

    Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele became the sixth active player to have three consecutive seasons scoring ten goals or more in 17 or fewer games.

    Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler would also find the scoresheet and extended his point streak to 11 games, matching a career high set back during the end of the 2015-16 season.

    Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen has 29 points on the season in 19 games played.

    Rantanen had a three-point night, registering one goal and two assists in the contest.

     

    Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog also made the score sheet for the Colorado Avalanche in the big win over the Boston Bruins.

    Boston’s David Pastrnak scored his 17th goal on the season and became the 11th player at the age of 22 or younger to register that mark in 18 team games played.

     

    VEGAS 5, Anaheim 0

    Vegas Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury had his 51st career shutout and moved into a four-way tie for 24th on the NHL’s all-time list for shutouts by a goaltender.

    Yesterday in NHL action…

     

    Minnesota 3, ST. LOUIS 2

     

    Minnesota finished off their longest road trip in the near 20 years of Minnesota Wild hockey with the win over the St. Louis Blues and amassed a record of 5-2-0 on this road trip, the most wins on such a single road trip.

     

    FLORIDA 5, Ottawa 1

     

    Florida’s Mike Hoffman extended his point scoring streak to 12 games, tying Carolina’s Sebastian Aho for the longest point-scoring streak on the season in the Florida Panthers 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators Sunday afternoon.

    Yesterday’s contest also marked the ninth time that the Panthers scored five goals in one period.

     

    Arizona 4, WASHINGTON 1

     

    The Arizona Coyotes scored two power-play goals to take down the defending Stanley Cup-champion Washington Capitals with a 4-1 win last night.

     

    Arizona in the last nine contests has a record of 6-2-1 after losing five of their first seven games to start the 2018-19 campaign.

    WINNIPEG 5, New Jersey 2

    Winnipeg Jets Blake Wheeler became the first player to reach the 500 career point mark as a Winnipeg jet since the club relocated to Winnipeg in the 2011-12 season.

    In addition to Wheeler reaching the 500 point mark, he joins three others to reach at least 500 points while a member of the Winnipeg Jets.

     

    Winnipeg would go on to defeat the New Jersey Devils 5-2 yesterday.

     

    BOSTON 4, Vegas 1

    David Pastrnak registered his 16th goal of the season and would tie Bronco Horvath for fifth place all-time in team history for most goals in 17 team games for the Boston Bruins.

    The Bruins would go on to defeat the defending Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights 4-1.

     

    Vegas played in their 100th game as a franchise in the loss.

     

    Vegas before this contest held a record of 58-33-8.

     

    SAN JOSE 3, Calgary 1

     

    San Jose Sharks Joe Pavelski was a factor in all three of the Sharks goals last night as they took down the Calgary Flames 3-1 at SAP Center in San Jose, California.

    The Sharks are now one point behind Pacific-division leader, Vancouver.

     

    Colorado 4, EDMONTON 1

     

    It only took 26 seconds into this contest for Mikko Rantanen to re-gain the a share of lead in points scored with 25 in the Colorado Avalanche’s 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers last night.

    TORONTO 6, New Jersey 1

    In the annual Hockey Hall of Fame game, the Toronto Maple Leafs would go on to rout the New Jersey Devils 6-1, thanks to a four-goal burst in the second period.

    Toronto’s Patrick Marleau would record his 600th career assist and Morgan Rielly would be the sixth defenceman in team history to have at least seven goals in the team’s first 16 games.

    New Jersey @ Toronto – 09/11/2018 – Game Preview and Recap
    Columbus 2, WASHINGTON 1

    This contest featured a re-match of last year’s Eastern Conference First Round match-up between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Washington Capitals.

    The three goals scored in this contest were all power-play goals, with the final goal being scored by Anthony Duclair, his seventh of the season.  With Duclair’s goal, he became the fourth player in franchise history to have seven goals in 16 games played.

    There were nine league contests last night.

     

    The Maple Leafs won their 10th game of the season out of 15 games for the 11th time in franchise history and the first since the 2013-14 season when they won 10 games out of the first 14.

     

     

    Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist won his 436th career game and is now one win shy of tying Jacques Plante for seventh place all time.

     

     

    Max Domi would score all three of Montreal’s goals in the contest to give him a goal-scoring streak of four contests and has 16 points on the season, including nine goals thus far.

    The Columbus Blue Jackets have defeated the Dallas Stars for the sixth consecutive time.

     

     

    Ottawa’s Mark Stone had a five-point game to lift Ottawa to the win over New Jersey. Stone is the fifth player in Senators’ history to have multiple five point games in the regular season.

     

     

    Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson would score yet again and continues to lead all rookies in goals and points but would still fall to the Detroit Red Wings in a shootout.

     

    Pettersson has scored 10 goals in 10 games played. He is the fifth player outside of the League’s first season to score 10+ goals through their first 10 NHL games.

     

     

    In Tampa Bay’s Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness night, Tampa Bay would get the win in the contest over the Edmonton Oilers and move to a record of 11-3-1 and into first place in the NHL standings.

     

     

    St. Louis F Ryan O’Reilly registered a hat-trick and would extend his point streak to eight games in the contest against the Hurricanes. O’Reilly also had an eight-game point streak during the 2015-16 season.

     

     

    In this match-up, Ilya Kovalchuk had one goal and two assists in the first game for new Kings head coach, Willie Desjardins.

     

     

     

    San Jose’s Joe Thornton played in his 1499th NHL contest last night and tied Mike Modano for 19th all time.

     

     

    With his next game, Thornton will become the first overall pick in the history of the NHL Draft to reach the 1500 game milestone.

     

    As a note from the contests yesterday, this would only be the fifth time in League history where the home teams swept a schedule of 9+ games.

    -Edmonton Oilers Milan Lucic will have a hearing today for roughing Tampa Bay’s Mathieu Joseph in last night’s contest.

     

     

    The NHL’s Department of Player Safety in accordance to the hearing announced that Lucic has been fined $10,000, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for roughing Mathieu Joseph.

    Commissioner Bettman Upholds 20 Game Suspension

    After a lengthy seven hour meeting between Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman last week in regards to Wilson’s 20 game suspension, which was announced on October 3rd, 2018 in the video above, it has been announced that Bettman has upheld 20 game suspension that was handed down by George Parros and the NHL Department of Player Safety.

     

    What does this mean for Tom Wilson?

    For Wilson, he still has to fulfill his 20 game sentence that was handed down by George Parros. However, Wilson and the NHLPA now have 7 days to submit an appeal to an arbitrator to have the suspension reduced.

     

    What message is Gary Bettman sending with this decision?

    In this scenario after reading the full 31 page explanation behind Bettman’s ruling it is clear that Bettman is sending multiple messages. One being to the NHLPA and their tactics to paint St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist as the player at complete fault for the hit and injuries he sustained. The other is fact that George Parros has actually had many conversations, some even in person, with Wilson throughout last season to discuss ways that Wilson can become a better player, but how in a sense has fallen on deaf ears.

     

    A more thorough look at Bettman’s ruling the Commissioner explains in great detail several reasons why he upheld the suspension and did not reduce it. For starters we look at the play in hand that took place. A point of arguement that the NHLPA took was that Sundqvist put himself into a “vulnerable” position, but as detailed in Bettman’s ruling below such was not the case:

    So as detailed above, and evidenced in all video evidence we have seen, that was not the case, and while Sundqvist was elgible to be hit, the notion he put himself in a vulnerable position, that was proved to be invalid.

     

    Then next up is you have Oskar Sundqvist’s injuries which are listed below:

    One of the biggest factors that lead to the 20 game ban is the fact that this was the second consecutive suspension doled out to Wilson that involved a player being injured and having to miss time as a resilt of Wilson’s hit. At the time of the hearing, and subsequent ruling, Sundqvist has not played a game yet this season due to his injuries from the hit by Wilson.

     

    Now let’s talk about the hearing as well. With the magnitude of this suspension, and the thorough testimonies that took place on October 18th, there were actually more people involved with this hearing than was known including former Washington Capitals defenseman Joe Reekie, and former NHL defenseman Mathieu Schnieder, both representing the NHLPA. It is also noted the Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan was in attendance and was also called upon to testify along side George Parros from the Department of Player Safety.

    The hearing lasted 7 hours and 15 minutes and yhe transcript, which undoubtedly was much longer than Bettman’s 31 page ruling, was delivered to the League office the very next day for review.

     

    In some of the more interesting notes in Bettman’s ruling are that from Tom Wilson’s testimony:

    In Wilson’s testimony, he openly admits that he did make contact with Sundqvist’s head, but that he could not conclude if Sundqvist’s head was the main point of contact. However, as noted, Bettman from watching the video concluded that it was.

    The arguement above is found to be a very interesting one. While yes, Wilson is in fact backchecking in accordance to Washington’s defensive system, I doubt under Barry Trotz last season, and Todd Reirdon this season that he has been coached to play with the intent to hit on every opportunity when backchecking. Especially since we don’t see a lot of major hits when the Capitals are backchecking.

     

    Then Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan under testimony stated the following:

    MacLellan openly admits in testimony that Wilson could have done something different to change the impact of the hit and where the main point of contact of the hit as well. This is a huge stressor right here as MacLellan, a former NHL player himself, understands thr nature of the game, and knows how to throw a hit qithout targeting the head.

    Now the above is strictly an explanation of the rule where “intent” is no longer something the League looks at when reviewing head hits  per Rule 48, which was amended five years ago. It gives a solid example as provided by Parros.

     

    And lastly, how did George Parros come to 20 games for Tom Wilson? The below note in Bettman’s ruling explains how:

    It should also be noted that George Parros had two in person meetings with Tom Wilson last season just so they could watch footage and talk about how he could improve his play and decision making on the ice, plus also received additional warnings (mainly in the playoffs leading up to and after his suspension against Pittsburgh in the 2nd round) and guidance throughout last season as well.

     

    What’s next?

    Next thing is that we wait to see what Tom Wilson and the NHLPA do. Odds are they will appeal the suspension and look to get it reduced by an arbitrator.

     

    However, the biggest thing that comes up next for Wilson is when he does finally return to the Capitals lineup. He will need to play smarter and pick better spots on when to throw his hits. Physicality is a hige part of hockey, and Wilson should never shy away from it, but he does need to do a better job.

    Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Monday, October 15th, 2018.

     

    There were three contests in the NHL yesterday.

    • Kyle Palmieri recorded two goals, his third consecutive multi-goal outing, to lift the New Jersey Devils over the San Jose Sharks with a 3-2 victory. In addition, Palmieri became the fourth player to record multi-goal games in each of his team’s first three games to kick off the regular-season campaign.

      Also in this contest, Joe Pavelski became the fifth player in NHL history to record at least 700 career points for a player drafted after the 200th overall pick.

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety had a phone hearing with Florida Panthers D Mike Matheson for his interference/unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Vancouver Canucks F Elias Pettersson earlier today. With this hearing, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Matheson has been suspended for two games.

     

    In NWHL news:

    • The NWHL announced the Player of the Week is Lexi Bender. Bender was dominant on both sides of the ice, recording two assists in Boston’s 5-1 win over the Metropolitan Riveters. She carried plays amongst her units in almost every shift on the ice.
