    There were seven contests across the NHL yesterday…

     

    Vegas 4, NY RANGERS 3 (OT)

    The Vegas Golden Knights would defeat the New York Rangers in overtime yesterday afternoon with Vegas’ Alex Tuch would score the game-winner at 2:11 in the overtime frame.

     

     

     

    CAROLINA 3, Arizona 0

    Carolina Hurricanes G Petr Mrazek would go on to have a 23 save performance to seal the shutout victory for the Hurricanes.

     

    Calgary 7, ST. LOUIS 2

    The Calgary Flames would score a shorthanded goal for the third consecutive game for the eighth time in franchise history and would go on to defeat the St. Louis Blues 7-2 in St. Louis last night.

     

    Buffalo 4, BOSTON 2

     

    Buffalo’s Jack Eichel now has five regular-season games of at least four points before his 23rd birthday and joins four other Buffalo Sabres for this mark in franchise history.

     

     

    San Jose 7, CHICAGO 3

    San Jose Sharks D Brent Burns became the 38th player in League history to be listed as a defenceman to register at least 600 points in the contest against the Chicago Blackhawks.

     

     

     

    WINNIPEG 5, Tampa Bay 4 (OT)

     

    Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele would score the game-winner in the overtime frame with 42 seconds left to seal the 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

     

    VANCOUVER 4, Edmonton 2

     

    Vancouver’s rookie Elias Pettersson extended his point streak to seven games and now leads all rookies with 35 points on the season in 30 games played.

    Today is Saturday, December 15th, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were eight contests in action yesterday.

     

    NEW JERSEY 5, Vegas 4 (OT)

    The Vegas Golden Knights would fall to the New Jersey Devils after be up 4-1.  New Jersey Devils would score four unanswered goals with New Jersey’s Nico Hischier scoring the game winner just 41 seconds into the overtime frame.

     

     

    Arizona 4, NY RANGERS 3 (OT)

     

    The Arizona Coyotes would also stage a come from behind win after being down three goals in the contest at the New York Rangers last night.  It would be the 12th time that the Coyotes franchise would accomplish this and the 29th time overall in franchise history.

     

     

    For the Rangers, goalie Henrik Lundqvist would register 30 saves on 34 opportunities.

     

     

    PITTSBURGH 5, Boston 3

     

    In an amazing performance, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith became the third goalie in the last 20 years to have a game in which he had at least 48 saves.  DeSmith joins Jeff Zatkoff and Ty Conklin.

     

    Boston Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak had a performance of 23 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

     

    Ottawa 4, DETROIT 2

     

    The Ottawa Senators would go on and get the road win when they would defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 last night at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit, Michigan last night.

     

    Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard would have 28 saves in the contest and Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson would have a performance of 26 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

    Washington 6, CAROLINA 5 (OT)

     

    After the Washington Capitals would be down 4-1 at 6:41 mark in the second period, the Capitals would tie the game 4-4 toward the end of the second period.

     

    Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin would have consecutive games in which he would have a hat-trick, and now has 28 goals on the season.

     

     

     

     

    When Ovechkin scored the power-play goal in the third period at the 9:49 mark, it would be his 237th career power-play goal. He now ranks at seventh place on the all-time list for power-play goals.

     

    Finally, for the Washington Capitals, Jonas Siegenthaler registered his first NHL point with the assist on Alex Oveckin’s goal at the 3:56 mark in the first period.

    ST. LOUIS 4, Colorado 3 (OT)

    The St. Louis Blues would go on to defeat the Colorado Avalanche in overtime with the 4-3 win at home last night.

     

    At the 2:05 mark in the overtime period, St. Louis Blues Ryan O’Reilly would cap off a two-point night when O’Reilly scored the game winner.

     

     

    Also in the contest, Colorado Avalanche’s Mikko Rantanen would register his 40th assist on the season with the secondary assist on J.T. Compher’s eighth goal on the season at the 13:10 mark in the third period.

     

     

    Winnipeg 4, CHICAGO 3 (OT)

    Chicago Blackhawks captain Johnathan Toews would net two goals, but it would not be enough as the Blackhawks would fall to the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 at United Center in Chicago, Illinois last night.

     

     

     

    The Jets Mark Scheifele would net his sixth overtime winner, which is good for third place in franchise history.  Scheifele now only trails Ilya Kovalchuk and Dustin Byfuglien for the career lead.

     

    EDMONTON 4, Philadelphia 1

     

     

    Connor McDavid would have two goals, and an assist, good for his 34th career three-point performance.  It is now ranked tied for fifth place for most three-point games before one’s 22nd birthday.

    In NHL news…

    With the comebacks last night, this has been the season of come-from-behind wins.

     

     

    The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins would both unveil thier logos that will be used for the upcoming Stadium Series game on February 27th, 2019.  The logos are “stripped-down” versions of their current logos.  The jerseys will be released at a later date.

    The St. Louis Blues and the Mess of Doug Armstrong

    Well everyone, it’s time to talk about the St. Louis Lose. Wait, that’s not right, let’s try again. It’s time to talk about the St. Louis Hughes. *Sigh* no, no, hold on, I’ll get it.

     

    It’s been a rough season to be a fan of the St. Louis *ahem* Blues, and at this point everyone either realizes that the team is in the middle of a rebuild or is in desperate need of one. To recap the last few weeks, since firing Mike Yeo shortly after their loss to the Los Angeles Kings on November 19, the Blues have gone 3-5-1 under interim coach Craig Berube, showing some signs of competency in beating Colorado, Nashville, and Winnipeg, but for the most part rolling over and letting teams score at will – just ask Patrick Laine

     

     

    The big questions are, where do we go from here and who should lead it. As far as the latter, I am not sure who it should be, but I am quite certain who it should not be: Doug Armstrong.


     

    To his credit, Doug Armstrong is decent at drafting. Look no farther than Robby Fabbri, Jordan Kyrou, and Robert Thomas to get a glimpse at the talent he his found. This is, however, only one role of a General Manager, and when it comes to two other important roles: trades and contracts, Armstrong has been woefully bad and are the main reason the Blues are in the position they are in now – he has a history of handing out bad contracts and trading players when they are at their lowest value.

     

    Dating back to 2015, Armstrong has offered inexplicable contract extensions to Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, Jori Lehtera, Alex Steen, and Jake Allen. These moves hamstrung the team and, upon realizing that these players might not be the ones to build a team around, forced Armstrong into trading valuable assets to get rid of them. While the acquisitions of Brayden Schenn and Ryan O’Reilly have undoubtedly been great, they came at the cost of multiple first round picks (for Schenn), and a first and second for O’Reilly. This was a huge overpayment for those players, in isolation, but Armstrong had to entice the Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres to take on the bad contracts of Lehtera, Sobotka, and Berglund.

     

    But great, at least he got out of those contracts – unfortunately, we do not have as many picks as we need to actually start a rebuild. And, somehow, the Blues are still fourth in the league in salary cap, due to the bloated contracts of Steen, Allen, and Jay Bouwmeester. These players are also likely not tradable assets because A) Bouwmeester and Steen have no-trade clauses, and B) they’re not very good. It is very unlikely that any team would want to take on a streaky and underperforming goalie, and a 34 year old winger making close to $6 million/year.

     

    Even more unfortunately, the Blues do not have many young players ready to step up. Thomas and Kyrou have shown flashes, but outside of those two you have only the continually hurt Fabbri, and very underwhelming players like Zach Sanford and Oskar Sundqvist. Many pundits lauded Doug Armstrong for trading Kevin Shattenkirk to the Washington Capitals, but looking at the return, we received a first rounder that had to be traded to get out of another mess, and Sanford, who aside from 5 games this season has contributed virtually nothing.

     

    Turning to some of our better players, including Schenn, O’Reilly, Vladimir Tarasenko, Colton Parayko, and Alex Pietrangelo, sure some of these players could net decent returns, but there is a very low chance that any return a 1:1 value. Tarasenko, O’Reilly, Parayko, and Schenn are all relatively young players – the types of players a rebuilding team needs to build around. Pietrangelo is an interesting option – still only 28 years old, and regardless of one down season, he is a dominant, all-world defenseman. The Blues lack defensive depth, and if he can return 2-3 Parayko level players, the Blues should consider making that trade. Otherwise, there is no sense trading him either.

     

    So here we are, a team with bloated contacts, very few young prospects, and a handful of players that, alone, cannot make the team competent. And no real head coach. This was all created by Doug Armstrong. Worse yet, he is tasked with finding us our next coach. The same man who created a “coach in waiting” position for Mike Yeo (he of the zero cups and underperforming Minnesota Wild), so he could not get away.

     

    Could the Blues get Jack Hughes? Maybe, though somehow the Blues are not the absolute worst team in the league, that honor belongs to the Chicago Blackhawks. The draft this year is very deep, so at least having a top 5 pick will be a step in the right direction, but with most of this team locked in past 2020, it is going to be a long road back to mediocrity. Aside from the Blues themselves being able to draft Jack Hughes, my hope is that the Blackhawks can get him. Chicago is even worse than the Blues defensively, and I have a suspicion that they would be open to dealing Hughes for Pietrangelo (and more), or possibly even Patrick Kane. Whatever the Blues do, they somehow need to trade away all but a few players.

     

    How can they do it? I don’t know. One thing is for sure though – Doug Armstrong cannot be the one leading the way.

    Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson would be the sixth different rookie since the NHL’s Expansion Era (1967-68) to have multiple games of at least five points in a game.

     

    WINNIPEG 7, Philadelphia 1

    Seven different Winnipeg Jets players would goals for the Jets in this contest against the Philadelphia Flyers yesterday afternoon.

     

    Jets Blake Wheeler would set a new franchise record for shorthanded points with 15 in the contest against the Flyers.

    Boston 2, OTTAWA 1 (OT)

     

     

    Montreal 3, CHICAGO 2

     

     

    ANAHEIM 6, New Jersey 5 (SO)

    In the Anaheim Ducks 6-5 win over the New Jersey Devils, three Anaheim players would have multi-point efforts in the contest.

    Both teams would start out the scoring fast and early when they combined for three goals in the first 2:47.  It would be the fastest time in which two teams would combine for three goals to start a contest this season.

     

    EDMONTON 1, Calgary 0

    Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid would score the lone goal in the contest, which would be his 22nd game-winning goal since the 2015-16 season, good for a tie for fourth place with three other players.

     

    VEGAS 4, Dallas 2

    Vegas Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury would earn his 17th win on the season, the most for any goalie this season, with the Vegas 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars last night.  Fleury is now two wins away from tying Tony Esposito for ninth place all-time amongst goaltenders.

     

     

    NWHL

    The lone contest in the NWHL…

     

    Boston Pride 5, METROPOLITAN RIVETERS 2

     

    The Boston Pride would score three goals late in the contest to defeat the Metropolitan Riveters by the score of 5-2.

     

    In the first period, Boston took the lead with a shorthanded goal when Amanda Pelkey scored her third goal on the season at the 8:55 mark.  Mallory Souliotis would register the assist on Pelkey’s goal.

     

    The Riveters Madison Packer would tie the score 4:01 later at 1-1.  Boston’s Dana Trivigno would make the game a 2-1 contest late in the second period with Trivigno’s second goal on the season.

     

    In the third period, the Riveters would tie the game a 2 a piece when Alexa Gruschow would score her first goal of the season.  After Gruschow would score, this is when the Pride would have their three-goal outburst in the final 1:54 of the contest, with two of these goals coming in a 28-second span on power-plays.

     

    At the 18:06 mark, Boston’s Kaleigh Fratkin would score her first goal of the season, with Alyssa Gagliardi getting her second assist on the season.  28 seconds later at the 18:34 mark, Mallory Souliotis would score her third goal on the season.  Toni Ann Miano would gain her second assist on the season.

     

    Boston’s fifth goal would be an empty-netter scored by McKenna Brand, her fourth of the season, with 31 seconds left in the contest.  Brand’s goal would be assisted by Haley Skarupa, her seventh on the season.

     

    Boston Pride goalie Katie Burt had 21 saves on 23 attempts, good for a save percentage of .913 whereas Metropolitan Riveters goalie Kimberly Sass, despite being pulled in the final minute of the contest, had 31 saves on 35 chances.  Sass had a save percentage of .886.

     

    With the win by the Pride, they are now tied with the Minnesota Whitecaps atop the NWHL Standings with a record of 6-2-0.

     

    The NWHL will take a three-week hiatus and resume contests on December 29th, 2018.  The Metropolitan Riveters next contest will not take place until January 6th, 2019.

    Dallas is 10-3-1 when playing games at home on the season thus far.

    Dallas has also won their last four contests.

    With this 1-0 St. Louis Blues win, they would snap the four-game win streak for the Winnipeg Jets.

     

    EDMONTON 7, Minnesota 2

     

    Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid now has 33 games in his career where he has at least three points in a game before his 22nd birthday.

     

    McDavid joins four other players for this exclusive list.

     

    With this win, Edmonton has won their last four home games and six out of the last seven.

    The Carolina Hurricanes took on the Anaheim Ducks last night and would end up winning the contest 4-1.

    The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced yesterday that Calgary Flames D Mark Giordano has been suspended for two games for kneeing Minnesota Wild’s F Mikko Koivu.

    Also, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced that Calgary Flames F Ryan Lomberg has been suspended for one game for leaving the player’s bench on a legal line change to start an altercation.

    This is additional discipline for the automatic suspension that was announced earlier yesterday.

     

     

    Today in the NWHL…

    The Buffalo Beauts take on the Connecticut Whale at HarborCenter today at 6 p.m., ET.

     

    In NWHL news today…

    The Edmonton Oilers would have a multi-goal comeback in the 3-2 win in a shootout over the St. Louis Blues last night.

     

    It would mark the 61st time this season that a team would comeback from a multi-goal deficit and win the contest.

     

    This would also mark the 17th club to have a multi-goal comeback and win in multiple occasions.

    The Ottawa Senators would defeat the San Jose Sharks 6-2 yesterday afternoon.  This matchup would mark the return of Sharks D Erik Karlsson to Ottawa for the first time since the offseason trade.

     

    Ottawa’s Thomas Chabot recorded his 30th point on the season, making him the third player to get to 30 points for a Senator defenceman in franchise history.

     

     

    Ottawa’s Ben Harpur would score his first NHL career goal in the win for the Senators.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 3, Columbus 2

     

    The New York Islanders would play their first contest in the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum last night of the season.

     

    Columbus Blue Jackets Cam Atkinson would extend his point streak to a career-best 10 contests and is only three games shy of tying the all-time franchise record set by Ryan Johansen in the 2014-15 season.

    Detroit 4, BOSTON 2

    The Detroit Red Wings snapped an eight-game regular-season winless streak against the Boston Bruins as the visitors when they defeated the Boston Bruins 4-2 last night.

    In his return to action, Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber would score twice to help lift the Canadiens past the New York Rangers with a 5-2 win.

     

     

    Tampa Bay 5, FLORIDA 4 (OT)

     

    Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning score the 15th game winner, the most in the NHL since the 2017-18 season.

     

     

    Tampa Bay would go on to win the contest over the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime.

     

    Winnipeg 4, NEW JERSEY 3 (OT)

     

    Mark Schiefele would score the fifth regular-season overtime goal, the most in Winnipeg Jets franchise history with the Jets 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils last night.

    In the NWHL contest from last night, the Connecticut Whale took on the Boston Pride in the NWHL Twitter Game of the Week.

     

    The Boston Pride would halt the Minnesota Whitecaps win streak at six games with the Pride’s 5-1 win at TRIA Rink last night.

     

    The contest would be scoreless for the first 17 minutes until  Mallory Souliotis scoredher first NWHL goal thanks to an assist from Amanda Pelkey to give the Pride the 1-0 lead.

     

    Jillian Dempsey would make the contest 2-0 before the end of the first period.

     

    Amanda Boulier would score the lone goal for the Whitecaps in the contest in the second period.

     

    The Boston Pride’s Hayley Skarupa would score on the power-play with 35 seconds left in the second period to give the Pride the 3-1 lead.

     

    In the third period Gigi Marvin would score both goals to give the Pride cement the 5-1 lead.

     

    The Minnesota Whitecaps look to take the win from the Boston Pride today at in front of another sold-out crowd at 2 p.m., CT and the game can be seen on NWHL.zone/watch

    The Toronto Maple Leafs and William Nylander came to terms on a six-year deal worth $41.77M deal, ending Nylander’s holdout.

     

     

     

     

     

    The NHL announced yesterday afternoon the NHL Three Stars of the Month.

     

     

     

     

     

    The NHL also announced today that the Buffalo Sabres Rasmus Dahlin has been named the NHL Rookie of the Month for the Month of November.

    First in the NHL…

    Yesterday’s schedule of games:

     

    Washington 5, NY RANGERS 3

    The Washington Capitals staged the 50th multi-goal comeback win on the NHL season yesterday afternoon when they defeated the NY Rangers 5-3.

    TORONTO 6, Philadelphia 0

    Andreas Johnsson had a hat trick, and achieved the mark in the first period.  Johnsson is the first player to score three goals in the first period since Wendell Clark on October 11, 1986.  Johnsson is the eighth player to score a hat trick in the first period.

    With the 6-0 win, this marks the largest margin of victory in a shutout at home since they defeated the Buffalo Sabres 7-0.

     

     

    Boston 3, MONTREAL 2

    Boston’s D John Moore would go on to score the game-winner for the Bruins, the first goal of his career.

     

    Buffalo 3, DETROIT 2 (SO)

    The Buffalo Sabres in this contest would win their ninth straight, the most since the 2006-07 season when they won 10 straight.


    Jeff Skinner of the Sabres scored his 18th goal on the season, the most so far on the season.  This is Skinner’s first season with the Buffalo Sabres.

    Chicago 5, FLORIDA 4 (OT)

    The Chicago Blackhawks would go on to win their first road game since their win on October 20th at the Columbus Blue Jackets when Chicago’s Erik Gustafsson would score the game-winner in the overtime frame.

    In the last 14 games between the two teams, Chicago has a record of 12-2-0 against Florida.

    NY ISLANDERS 4, Carolina 1

    NY Islanders Josh Bailey had his sixth multi-point game of the season, leading the team.  Bailey had 20 multi-point games during the 2017-18 campaign.

    PITTSBURGH 4, Columbus 2

    Pittsburgh Penguins Jake Guentzel had a hat trick of his own in the 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets last night.

    Winnipeg 8, ST. LOUIS 4

    Patrik Laine scored on five different occasions to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the St. Louis Blues 8-4 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis last night.

    Laine joins three other players to have a five-goal performance before their 21st birthday.

    COLORADO 3, Dallas 2

     

    VEGAS 6, San Jose 0

    The Vegas Golden Knights scored the fastest goal in franchise history in the shutout over the San Jose Sharks last night.

    Marc-Andre Fleury posted a shutout in consecutive appearances for the third time.  He is also the second goalie in the expansion era to have at least 5 shutouts in 25 teams games in two different seasons.  He joins Ed Belfour on this list for such an achievement.

     

    Vancouver 4, LOS ANGELES 2

    Vancouver Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson had a multi-point contest and Adam Gaudette scored his first NHL goal in the 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center in Los Angeles last night.
