    The Minnesota Wild would take on the Toronto Maple Leafs yesterday afternoon in the “Next Gen Game” in Toronto and the Maple Leafs would fall to the Wild by the score of 4-3.

    Toronto’s Mitch Marner would open up the scoring in the first seven seconds of the contest.  With that goal, he tied a mark set back in 1932 for the quickest goal by a Maple Leaf in the storied history of the Maple Leafs franchise.

     

     

     

     

     

    Mitch Marner would score again at the 5:38 mark in the contest and became the first Maple Leaf player to have two goals in the opening six minutes of the contest since Phil Kessel achieved the same feat back on January 30th, 2010.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    William Nylander would net the final goal for the Maple Leafs, his first of the season, at the 8:16 mark in the second period.

     

    Despite playing a strong first six minutes in this contest, Toronto would virtually fall flat for the duration of the contest with costly turnovers and being outshot the entire game.  On four Power-Play chances for Toronto, they would fail to take advantage of the extra-man on all four chances.

    BOSTON 6, Calgary 4

    The Boston Bruins, fresh off their win against the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2019 Winter Classic two days ago, would continue their winning ways with the 6-4 win over the Calgary Flames on home ice last night.

     

    For Calgary, they would register a League-high 13th shorthanded goal and this would be the ninth time that they would register at least 13 shorthanded goals in a season.

     

    Jake DeBrusk scored in the game twice, including the eighth game-winner in his career, and helped the Bruins win their third consecutive game.

    The New York Islanders faced off against the Chicago Blackhawks at Nassau Coliseum and would go on to defeat Chicago 3-2 in overtime.

    ST. LOUIS 5, Washington 2

    The St. Louis Blues would face off against the Washington Capitals last night and would come away with the 5-2 victory at Enterprise Center last night.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Blues defenceman Alex Pietrangelo would score his fifth goal of the season in the contest and now has possession of second place all-time for most goals by a defenceman in St. Louis Blues history with 85 goals.

    Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov would register his seventh straight multi-point game to become only the second player to have seven consecutive multi-point games and the first since Vincent Lecavalier had an eight-game streak during the 2007-08 season.

    In a night of firsts for two Washington Capitals players, the Capitals would go on to defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2.  Washington’s Tyler Lewington and Madison Bowey would go on to score their first career NHL goals in the contest.  Lewington would also go on to register a “Gordie Howe hat trick” in the contest as well.

    In the lone NWHL contest of the day, the Buffalo Beauts took on the Minnesota Whitecaps.

    The Minnesota Whitecaps would get back in the win column when the Whitecaps would go on to defeat the Buffalo Beauts at KeyBank Center yesterday afternoon in downtown Buffalo.

    Minnesota’s Lee Stecklein would be the difference maker when she scored the game winner with 1:17 left in the game to seal the win for the Whitecaps.

    Kendall Coyne Schoefield would be responsible for the Whitecaps tying the score at 1 in the second period thanks to a power-play for the Whitecaps.

    With Minnesota’s win, they move to a record of 7-2 and Buffalo falls to a record of 4-4 on the season.

    The Whitecaps and Beauts face off again today at 1:30 p.m., ET.

    Game Recap:

    The Washington Capitals return from the Holiday break well rested as they took on the Carolina Hurricanes in a Metropolitan Division match up. The Capitals would control most of the tempo of this game despite taking three penalties in the first period. The second period would feature the Capitals forcing the play in the Hurricanes zone and cause the Hurricanes to take three penalties in the second period with the Capitals converting on the third one. The Capitals would keep up the pressure against the Hurricanes in the third period to secure their third straight victory.

    Analysis:

    This was a good period for the Capitals, but they kept getting themselves into penalty trouble. However, the Capitals did a great job of winning the battles to the puck to diffuse the Hurricanes powerplay opportunities. Also the Capitals did a very good job of pressuring the Hurricanes in their own zone and creating scoring chances for themselves.

     

    Need to Do:

    The Capitals need to keep playing the strong game that they are, but they need to stay out of the penalty box, and force the Hurricanes to make mistakes and capitalize on them.

    Analysis:

    Another good period for the Capitals that saw them force the Hurricanes to take 3 penalties this period and capitalizing late on their third chance. Great play by the Capitals earlier in the second period by forcing the pressure in the zone and making the Hurricanes defense cough up the puck and lead to Chandler Stephenson’s goal.

     

    Need to Do:

    The Capitals need to keep their foot on the gas, and continue to force the play in the Hurricanes zone. Also the Capitals need to make sure they stay out of the penalty box, and not allow the Hurricanes an opportunity to get back into this game.

    A slower moving third period that saw the Hurricanes get on the board and ending Braden Holtby’s shutout chances after Matt Niskanen was driven into the boards from behind by Clark Bishop while Niskanen was entangled with Justin Williams. Overall a good period for the Capitals as they walk out the victors in this one.

    With the Holiday break behind us, the NHL gets right back to it as the Washington Capitals host the Carolina Hurricanes. The Capitals went into the break winning both games of their back to back, while the Hurricanes were not successful in their first game, but when they donned the Hartford Whalers uniforms, they defeated the Boston Bruins in convincing fashion.

    While the Hurricanes were not successful on their powerplay opportunities against the Bruins, they did however use them to swing the momentum in their favor. Plus getting two shorthanded goals from Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho was huge for the Hurricanes in their victory.

    1. Control the tempo

    As mentioned for Carolina, they were very good at using their special teams units to take control of the game against Boston. The Capitals will need to combat that by controlling the tempo of the game and keep themselves out of the penalty box.

     

    2. Get Special Teams back on track

    The Capitals need to shore up their penalty kill, especially against Carolina. Also the Capitals need to shake up their powerplay a bit as well, and be less predictable.

    Columbus 3, NEW JERSEY 0

    The Columbus Blue Jackets would go on to defeat the New Jersey Devils yesterday afternoon by the score of 3-0.

     

     

    The New Jersey Devils would wear their own heritage jerseys in this contest.  The jerseys were worn by the Devils from the 1982-83 season, the first season for the team in New Jersey, until the 1991-92 NHL season.

    Blue jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky would register his 14th shutout since the 2016-17 NHL season, the most shutouts in that time frame.

     

    CAROLINA 5, Boston 3

    In this contest, the Carolina Hurricanes would wear their Hartford Whalers throwbacks for a Hartford Whalers night last night in Raleigh and would go on to defeat the the Boston Bruins by the score of 5-3.

     

     

    Carolina’s Sebastian Aho would go on to have a four-point performance (2G, 2A) in the contest and Carolina’s Petr Mrazek would go on to have a 27 save performance on 30 shots.

    In addition to Aho, Teuvo Teravainen would also have a four-point game.

     

     

    Carolina would also go on to have two shorthanded goals in this game.

    Game Recap – 12/23/2018 – Boston Bruins v. Hartford Whalers

     

     

    Philadelphia 3, NY RANGERS 2 (SO)

    The Philadelphia Flyers would go on to defeat the New York Rangers yesterday and this would mark the fifth consecutive win the Flyers would have over the Rangers.

     

    Despite the loss in the shootout, the Rangers would still get a point in the standings.

     

     

    Florida 6, CHICAGO 3

    In the Florida Panthers 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday, Florida’s Jayce Hawryluk would score the first two goals of his NHL career.

    Florida has won four out of their last five contests.

     

    In addition to Hawryluk having two goals, Panthers defenceman Mackenzie Wagner would also have a two point performance.  Wagner would have two assists in this contest.  This would be the first multi-point contest for both players.

     

    TORONTO 5, Detroit 4 (OT)

    Detroit’s Dylan Larkin would extend his point streak to a career-high of 11 contests.  This makes it the longest such streak since Henrik Zetterberg had an 11 game run during the 2010-11 season.

    Toronto’s Patrick Marleau would play in his 1,612th regular season NHL game, tying Hall of Famer Ray Bourque for the tenth most in NHL history.

    Detroit’s Trevor Daley would go on to play in his 1,000th NHL career contest last night in this game.

     

     

     

    NY Islanders 3, DALLAS 1

    With the Islanders 3-1 win at the Dallas Stars last night, the New York Islanders would finish off their road trip going into the holiday break with a 3-1-0 record.

     

    Los Angeles 4, VEGAS 3 (OT)

    The Los Angeles Kings won their 36th regular season overtime game since the 3-on-3 overtime format was introduced in the 2015-16 season when the Kings go on to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3.

     

    This would be the Vegas Golden Knights second consecutive overtime loss.

     

    Arizona 4, SAN JOSE 3 (SO)

    The Arizona Coyotes would go on to defeat the San Jose Sharks 4-3.

     

    With Joe Thornton’s assist in the first period on Tim Heed’s goal, Thornton would register his 1,041st career assist.  He passed Marcel Dionne for tenth place all time in the NHL.  He is now eight assists shy on his career from tying Gordie Howe for ninth place.

     

     

     

    The NHL resumes action Thursday night.

    The Vegas Golden Knights would defeat the New York Rangers in overtime yesterday afternoon with Vegas’ Alex Tuch would score the game-winner at 2:11 in the overtime frame.

     

     

     

    CAROLINA 3, Arizona 0

    Carolina Hurricanes G Petr Mrazek would go on to have a 23 save performance to seal the shutout victory for the Hurricanes.

     

    Calgary 7, ST. LOUIS 2

    The Calgary Flames would score a shorthanded goal for the third consecutive game for the eighth time in franchise history and would go on to defeat the St. Louis Blues 7-2 in St. Louis last night.

     

    Buffalo 4, BOSTON 2

     

    Buffalo’s Jack Eichel now has five regular-season games of at least four points before his 23rd birthday and joins four other Buffalo Sabres for this mark in franchise history.

     

     

    San Jose 7, CHICAGO 3

    San Jose Sharks D Brent Burns became the 38th player in League history to be listed as a defenceman to register at least 600 points in the contest against the Chicago Blackhawks.

     

     

     

    WINNIPEG 5, Tampa Bay 4 (OT)

     

    Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele would score the game-winner in the overtime frame with 42 seconds left to seal the 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

     

    VANCOUVER 4, Edmonton 2

     

    Vancouver’s rookie Elias Pettersson extended his point streak to seven games and now leads all rookies with 35 points on the season in 30 games played.

    There were eight contests in action yesterday.

     

    NEW JERSEY 5, Vegas 4 (OT)

    The Vegas Golden Knights would fall to the New Jersey Devils after be up 4-1.  New Jersey Devils would score four unanswered goals with New Jersey’s Nico Hischier scoring the game winner just 41 seconds into the overtime frame.

     

     

    Arizona 4, NY RANGERS 3 (OT)

     

    The Arizona Coyotes would also stage a come from behind win after being down three goals in the contest at the New York Rangers last night.  It would be the 12th time that the Coyotes franchise would accomplish this and the 29th time overall in franchise history.

     

     

    For the Rangers, goalie Henrik Lundqvist would register 30 saves on 34 opportunities.

     

     

    PITTSBURGH 5, Boston 3

     

    In an amazing performance, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith became the third goalie in the last 20 years to have a game in which he had at least 48 saves.  DeSmith joins Jeff Zatkoff and Ty Conklin.

     

    Boston Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak had a performance of 23 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

     

    Ottawa 4, DETROIT 2

     

    The Ottawa Senators would go on and get the road win when they would defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 last night at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit, Michigan last night.

     

    Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard would have 28 saves in the contest and Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson would have a performance of 26 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

    Washington 6, CAROLINA 5 (OT)

     

    After the Washington Capitals would be down 4-1 at 6:41 mark in the second period, the Capitals would tie the game 4-4 toward the end of the second period.

     

    Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin would have consecutive games in which he would have a hat-trick, and now has 28 goals on the season.

     

     

     

     

    When Ovechkin scored the power-play goal in the third period at the 9:49 mark, it would be his 237th career power-play goal. He now ranks at seventh place on the all-time list for power-play goals.

     

    Finally, for the Washington Capitals, Jonas Siegenthaler registered his first NHL point with the assist on Alex Oveckin’s goal at the 3:56 mark in the first period.

    The St. Louis Blues would go on to defeat the Colorado Avalanche in overtime with the 4-3 win at home last night.

     

    At the 2:05 mark in the overtime period, St. Louis Blues Ryan O’Reilly would cap off a two-point night when O’Reilly scored the game winner.

     

     

    Also in the contest, Colorado Avalanche’s Mikko Rantanen would register his 40th assist on the season with the secondary assist on J.T. Compher’s eighth goal on the season at the 13:10 mark in the third period.

     

     

    Winnipeg 4, CHICAGO 3 (OT)

    Chicago Blackhawks captain Johnathan Toews would net two goals, but it would not be enough as the Blackhawks would fall to the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 at United Center in Chicago, Illinois last night.

     

     

     

    The Jets Mark Scheifele would net his sixth overtime winner, which is good for third place in franchise history.  Scheifele now only trails Ilya Kovalchuk and Dustin Byfuglien for the career lead.

    Connor McDavid would have two goals, and an assist, good for his 34th career three-point performance.  It is now ranked tied for fifth place for most three-point games before one’s 22nd birthday.

    The Washington Capitals managed to leave Carolina with the shootout victory over the Hurricanes. The Capitals did so while constantly putting themselves in the penalty box which the Hurricanes made them pay for that 3 times. Also Alex Ovechkin’s 2nd goal came controversially as Jonas Siegenthaler clearly interfered with Dougie Hamilton to allow Ovechkin to get into the slot area to score.

    Analysis:

    Not a solid period for the Capitals. Giving up the first goal of the game in the first minute was not ideal, especially for going up against a team that got home last night at 3 in the morning. The Capitals responded very well by getting a goal of their own to tie the game. However, it would be poor play on their powerplay that would result in a shorthanded goal against, plus Madison Bowey needs to play smarter. The penalties he has been taking have been hurting the Capitals.

     

    Need to Do:

    The Capitals need to clean up their play in their own zone. They have been sloppy, and it has been costly. The Capitals need to come out and start the 2nd period with a better pace to their game, and on their next power play opportunity they need to get Tom Wilson out there.

    Analysis:

    Yet again another rough period for the Capitals, but this time they ended it strong. They took a couple bad penalties, one of which was very questionable, and the Hurricanes made them pay for it. The Capitals were able to tie it up late, even though Alex Ovechkin’s 2nd goal should have not happened as it was clear interference by Jonas Siegenthaler, and has gotten them some confidence.

     

    Need to Do:

    The Capitals need to play a full 20 minutes. They need to play smart and stay out of the penalty box. The Capitals also needs to contain the hurricanes speed as right now they are being burned by Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen.

    Analysis:

    A decent 3rd period and overtime period for the Capitals. They did great getting the lead on their lone powerplay of the 3rd period only to blow it one a sloppy play by Braden Holtby behind the net to let former Capital Justin Williams tie it up on a powerplay. In overtime the Capitals started strong, and then was forced to kill off a late Matt Niskanen tripping call. As for the shootout, why did Rod Brind’Amour not put in Sebastian Aho or Teuvo Teravainen?
