    For our first episode of 2019, Michael Lindenbaum is joined by our St. Louis Blues contributor Aryan Weisenfeld as they tackle several subjects on the show.

     

    Michael and Aryan go in depth about the NHL All Star Game Rosters and about specific players that made it to the All Star Game, plus they discussed which game Alex Ovechkin should sit out for his one game suspension for not attending the All Star Weekend.

     

    Michael and Aryan also go into an in depth conversation about Washington Capitals Tom Wilson and the stigma that follows him no matter what he does when he plays, plus also the double standard that there is in the NHL when it comes to discipline from Player Safety.

     

    Plus Michael and Aryan talk about the Blues and what’s going wrong with them, the Dallas Stars and their CEO putting their top players on blast, the 2020 All Star Game, 2020 Winter Classic, and the other outdoor games that were announced during the Winter Classic earlier this week.

    Game Recap – 1/4/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Dallas Stars

    Washington Capitals (24-12-3 51pts) v. Dallas Stars (21-16-4 46pts)

     

    Game Recap:

    The Washington Capitals opened up this game with a lot more jump in their stride as they would take the momentum of this game early. However, a Matt Niskanen penalty less than six minutes into the game would allow the Dallas Stars to swing the momentum their way, but the Capitals would successfully kill off the penalty. After some more faced paced action between the two teams, Alex Ovechkin would take an ill advised boarding penalty which would allow the Stars to get on the board during the powerplay as Tyler Seguin netted his 14th of the season. After the Stars took the lead, the Capitals started to look very sluggish, especially in their own zone. The Capitals would be out shot 14-5 in the first period, as well as dominated in the faceoff circle 11-6 by the Stars.

    In the second period, the Capitals would get their first powerplay opportunity as Roman Polak would be called interference, but the Capitals would not be very effective with the extra attacker on this one as they only registered one shot on goal. However, after the powerplay ended the Capitals would maintain zone time, and create pressure on the Stars in their own zone. With this pressure and built up the momentum the Capitals would get a goal from Lars Eller off of a backhand shot that Anton Khudobin never saw due to the screen by Andre Burakovsky. Then off of coincidental minors to Alexander Radulov and Michal Kempny both teams would generate some scoring chances, but neither would be able to capitalize on them during the 4 on 4. With less than 5 minutes left in the period Eller would be called for high sticking, but the Capitals would play spectacularly on this penalty kill that even saw some great offense generated by Tom Wilson and Chandler Stephenson. In the second period this was a much better period for the Capitals as they out shot the Stars 15-8, were skating better, and generating much better scoring opportunities. However, the Stars are still dominating the Capitals in the faceoff circle.

    Midway through the 3rd period after a lot of back and forth between the two teams, the Capitals would get a powerplay opportunity when Erik Condra would be called for hooking. On the powerplay the Capitals mixed it up a bit and got three shots on goal, including two by Ovechkin on different looks. After a lot of great pressure inside the Stars zone, Matt Niskanen would draw a penalty as Brett Ritchie would be called for slashing to give the Capitals their second powerplay of the period. While the Capitals did not convert on this powerplay, they would continue the push after the penalty expired and create a really great scoring chance that Khudobin would rob them on. After no goals being scored in third, which saw the Capitals dominate the Stars in the shot department 14-2, this game would head to overtime.

    After a very close back and forth overtime period it would be Radulov protecting the puck extremely well while wrapping around the net to find an open Seguin for the game winning goal in overtime. The Capitals will walk out with one point and be tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the Metropolitan Division. Also hats of to both goalies as Khudobin and Pheonix Copley both played spectacularly for their teams.

    Columbus 3, NEW JERSEY 0

    The Columbus Blue Jackets would go on to defeat the New Jersey Devils yesterday afternoon by the score of 3-0.

     

     

    The New Jersey Devils would wear their own heritage jerseys in this contest.  The jerseys were worn by the Devils from the 1982-83 season, the first season for the team in New Jersey, until the 1991-92 NHL season.

    Blue jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky would register his 14th shutout since the 2016-17 NHL season, the most shutouts in that time frame.

     

    CAROLINA 5, Boston 3

    In this contest, the Carolina Hurricanes would wear their Hartford Whalers throwbacks for a Hartford Whalers night last night in Raleigh and would go on to defeat the the Boston Bruins by the score of 5-3.

     

     

    Carolina’s Sebastian Aho would go on to have a four-point performance (2G, 2A) in the contest and Carolina’s Petr Mrazek would go on to have a 27 save performance on 30 shots.

    In addition to Aho, Teuvo Teravainen would also have a four-point game.

     

     

    Carolina would also go on to have two shorthanded goals in this game.

    Game Recap – 12/23/2018 – Boston Bruins v. Hartford Whalers

     

     

    Philadelphia 3, NY RANGERS 2 (SO)

    The Philadelphia Flyers would go on to defeat the New York Rangers yesterday and this would mark the fifth consecutive win the Flyers would have over the Rangers.

     

    Despite the loss in the shootout, the Rangers would still get a point in the standings.

     

     

    Florida 6, CHICAGO 3

    In the Florida Panthers 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday, Florida’s Jayce Hawryluk would score the first two goals of his NHL career.

    Florida has won four out of their last five contests.

     

    In addition to Hawryluk having two goals, Panthers defenceman Mackenzie Wagner would also have a two point performance.  Wagner would have two assists in this contest.  This would be the first multi-point contest for both players.

     

    TORONTO 5, Detroit 4 (OT)

    Detroit’s Dylan Larkin would extend his point streak to a career-high of 11 contests.  This makes it the longest such streak since Henrik Zetterberg had an 11 game run during the 2010-11 season.

    Toronto’s Patrick Marleau would play in his 1,612th regular season NHL game, tying Hall of Famer Ray Bourque for the tenth most in NHL history.

    Detroit’s Trevor Daley would go on to play in his 1,000th NHL career contest last night in this game.

     

     

     

    NY Islanders 3, DALLAS 1

    With the Islanders 3-1 win at the Dallas Stars last night, the New York Islanders would finish off their road trip going into the holiday break with a 3-1-0 record.

     

    Los Angeles 4, VEGAS 3 (OT)

    The Los Angeles Kings won their 36th regular season overtime game since the 3-on-3 overtime format was introduced in the 2015-16 season when the Kings go on to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3.

     

    This would be the Vegas Golden Knights second consecutive overtime loss.

     

    Arizona 4, SAN JOSE 3 (SO)

    The Arizona Coyotes would go on to defeat the San Jose Sharks 4-3.

     

    With Joe Thornton’s assist in the first period on Tim Heed’s goal, Thornton would register his 1,041st career assist.  He passed Marcel Dionne for tenth place all time in the NHL.  He is now eight assists shy on his career from tying Gordie Howe for ninth place.

     

     

     

    The NHL resumes action Thursday night.

    There were 10 contests on the NHL slate yesterday.

     

    Calgary 2, MINNESOTA 1

    In a penalty filled contest between the Calgary Flames and the Minnesota Wild, the Calgary Flames would come away from Minnesota with the 2-1 victory yesterday afternoon.

    Flames D Mark Giordano became the first player in Flames history to have shorthanded goals in consecutive games with his short-handed goal at 12:03 in the first period.

     

     

    Despite being outshot, Calgary would have the most important side of the stat sheet with their 2-1 win.

     

    MONTREAL 5, Ottawa 2

     

    This would be the Canadiens third win over the Senators in 12 days.

     

     

    The Montreal Canadiens, with their win, would give head coach Claude Julien his 600th NHL win.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 4, Detroit 3 (OT)

     

    NY Islanders Matthew Barzal would net the winner in the shootout frame to give the Islanders the win over Detroit.

     

    PITTSBURGH 4, Los Angeles 3

    With the overtime winner by Phil Kessel, Kessel now ties Hall of Famer Mike Modano, Bill Guerin, and David Legwand for the second most regular season overtime winners by a  U.S.-born player with nine goals.

     

    ANAHEIM 2, Columbus 1

    The Anaheim Ducks would seal the 2-1 win, holding off a late rally from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

    Anaheim’s Daniel Sprong would score the only two goals for the Ducks.  Anaheim has won 10 out of their last 12 contests with this win over Columbus.

    FLORIDA 4, Toronto 3 (OT)

    With the Florida Panthers over the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime, the Panthers Aleksander Barkov would become the first player in the 25-year history of the franchise to complete the hat-trick with an overtime goal.

    Barkov, with his three goals in the contest, now has 114 goals as a Panther.  He moved past Radek Dvorak, who had 113 goals as a Panther.

    Despite Toronto scoring three goals in the third period, two by Mitchell Marner and other by John Tavares, the Maple Leafs were unable to take advantage in the overtime frame.

    Washington Capitals F Alex Ovechkin would extend his point-scoring streak to 14 games, a career-high, with his League-leading 29th goal on the season.

    Alex Ovechkin now sits one goal away from having his 14th consecutive season in which he has scored at least 30 goals in a season.

     

    Rasums Dahlin, last June’s number one overall pick, became the fifth different rookie defenceman in Buffalo Sabres history to record at least three points in a contest.

    Nashville Predators Ryan Johansen would seal the winner in the shootout frame to give the Predators a of 22-10-1 (45 pts), moving back the top of the Western Conference standings.

    In this contest, Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen would become the fifth set of teammates to reach the 50-point plateau since the 1981-1982 season.

     

     

    VANCOUVER 5, Philadelphia 1

    Philadelphia’s lone goal in the contest would be scored by Scott Laughton at 16:29 in the first period to bring the

     

    Meanwhile for the Vancouver Canucks, rookie sensation Elias Pettersson continues to find his way onto to scoring sheet.

    Pettersson has extended an assist and point streak to six games, amassing three goals and nine assists (12 points) and this matches a Vancouver Canucks rookie record for longest assist streak.

     

    The longest assist streak belongs to J.J. Daigneault during the 1984-85 season.

     

    The longest rookie point streak belong to Pavel Bure, who had a point in at least eight straight contests during the 1991-92 season.

    Vancouver 6, ST. LOUIS 1

     

    Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson would be the sixth different rookie since the NHL’s Expansion Era (1967-68) to have multiple games of at least five points in a game.

     

    WINNIPEG 7, Philadelphia 1

    Seven different Winnipeg Jets players would goals for the Jets in this contest against the Philadelphia Flyers yesterday afternoon.

     

    Jets Blake Wheeler would set a new franchise record for shorthanded points with 15 in the contest against the Flyers.

    Boston 2, OTTAWA 1 (OT)

     

     

    Montreal 3, CHICAGO 2

     

     

    ANAHEIM 6, New Jersey 5 (SO)

    In the Anaheim Ducks 6-5 win over the New Jersey Devils, three Anaheim players would have multi-point efforts in the contest.

    Both teams would start out the scoring fast and early when they combined for three goals in the first 2:47.  It would be the fastest time in which two teams would combine for three goals to start a contest this season.

     

    EDMONTON 1, Calgary 0

    Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid would score the lone goal in the contest, which would be his 22nd game-winning goal since the 2015-16 season, good for a tie for fourth place with three other players.

     

    VEGAS 4, Dallas 2

    Vegas Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury would earn his 17th win on the season, the most for any goalie this season, with the Vegas 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars last night.  Fleury is now two wins away from tying Tony Esposito for ninth place all-time amongst goaltenders.

     

     

    NWHL

    The lone contest in the NWHL…

     

    Boston Pride 5, METROPOLITAN RIVETERS 2

     

    The Boston Pride would score three goals late in the contest to defeat the Metropolitan Riveters by the score of 5-2.

     

    In the first period, Boston took the lead with a shorthanded goal when Amanda Pelkey scored her third goal on the season at the 8:55 mark.  Mallory Souliotis would register the assist on Pelkey’s goal.

     

    The Riveters Madison Packer would tie the score 4:01 later at 1-1.  Boston’s Dana Trivigno would make the game a 2-1 contest late in the second period with Trivigno’s second goal on the season.

     

    In the third period, the Riveters would tie the game a 2 a piece when Alexa Gruschow would score her first goal of the season.  After Gruschow would score, this is when the Pride would have their three-goal outburst in the final 1:54 of the contest, with two of these goals coming in a 28-second span on power-plays.

     

    At the 18:06 mark, Boston’s Kaleigh Fratkin would score her first goal of the season, with Alyssa Gagliardi getting her second assist on the season.  28 seconds later at the 18:34 mark, Mallory Souliotis would score her third goal on the season.  Toni Ann Miano would gain her second assist on the season.

     

    Boston’s fifth goal would be an empty-netter scored by McKenna Brand, her fourth of the season, with 31 seconds left in the contest.  Brand’s goal would be assisted by Haley Skarupa, her seventh on the season.

     

    Boston Pride goalie Katie Burt had 21 saves on 23 attempts, good for a save percentage of .913 whereas Metropolitan Riveters goalie Kimberly Sass, despite being pulled in the final minute of the contest, had 31 saves on 35 chances.  Sass had a save percentage of .886.

     

    With the win by the Pride, they are now tied with the Minnesota Whitecaps atop the NWHL Standings with a record of 6-2-0.

     

    The NWHL will take a three-week hiatus and resume contests on December 29th, 2018.  The Metropolitan Riveters next contest will not take place until January 6th, 2019.

    The NWHL announced that Original NWHLer and current Boston Pride Kaleigh Fratkin has been named this week’s NWHL Player of the Week.  Fratkin would score the game-winner for the Boston Pride with 1:54 left to give the Pride the win over the Metropolitan Riveters yesterday.  The win would also push the Boston Pride to first place in the NWHL standings with a record of 6-2-0.

    The Dallas Stars faced off against the San Jose Sharks last night and would win this contest 3-2.

    Dallas is 10-3-1 when playing games at home on the season thus far.

    Dallas has also won their last four contests.

     

    St. Louis 1, WINNIPEG 0

    With this 1-0 St. Louis Blues win, they would snap the four-game win streak for the Winnipeg Jets.

     

    EDMONTON 7, Minnesota 2

     

    Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid now has 33 games in his career where he has at least three points in a game before his 22nd birthday.

     

    McDavid joins four other players for this exclusive list.

     

    With this win, Edmonton has won their last four home games and six out of the last seven.

     

     

    Carolina 4, ANAHEIM 1

    The Carolina Hurricanes took on the Anaheim Ducks last night and would end up winning the contest 4-1.

    Sebastian Aho would score the empty net goal to seal the win for the Hurricanes late in the third period.

     

     

     

     

    This week’s NHL European Game of the Week is the contest between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres

     

    In NHL news…

    The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced yesterday that Calgary Flames D Mark Giordano has been suspended for two games for kneeing Minnesota Wild’s F Mikko Koivu.

    Also, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced that Calgary Flames F Ryan Lomberg has been suspended for one game for leaving the player’s bench on a legal line change to start an altercation.

    This is additional discipline for the automatic suspension that was announced earlier yesterday.

     

     

    Today in the NWHL…

    The Buffalo Beauts take on the Connecticut Whale at HarborCenter today at 6 p.m., ET.

    The Tampa Bay Lightning would win their 20th game on the season, becoming the sixth franchise to have 20 wins in consecutive seasons.

    NASHVILLE 2, Buffalo 1

    The Nashville Predators for the ninth time this season held an opponent to no more than one goal in a contest, which includes three shutouts.  Nashville would hand Buffalo a loss with the 2-1 win.

     

    DALLAS 4, Edmonton 1

    In the Dallas Stars 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers, all four goals by Dallas were scored by different players in the contest.

    In NHL News today…

    The NHL Department of Player Safety announced yesterday that Detroit Red Wings F Tyler Bertuzzi has been suspended for two games for unsportsmanlike conduct/roughing in Sunday’s contest between the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche.

     

    The NHL today officially awarded Seattle an expansion franchise to begin play in the 2021-22 season.

    The Seattle franchise will be the 32nd in the NHL and will be placed in the Pacific Division.  The Arizona Coyotes will be relocated to the Central Division, giving a full balance between all divisions and conferences.

    In the NHL European Game of the Week…

     

     

    The Ottawa Senators would defeat the San Jose Sharks 6-2 yesterday afternoon.  This matchup would mark the return of Sharks D Erik Karlsson to Ottawa for the first time since the offseason trade.

     

    Ottawa’s Thomas Chabot recorded his 30th point on the season, making him the third player to get to 30 points for a Senator defenceman in franchise history.

     

     

    Ottawa’s Ben Harpur would score his first NHL career goal in the win for the Senators.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 3, Columbus 2

     

    The New York Islanders would play their first contest in the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum last night of the season.

     

    Columbus Blue Jackets Cam Atkinson would extend his point streak to a career-best 10 contests and is only three games shy of tying the all-time franchise record set by Ryan Johansen in the 2014-15 season.

     

     

    Dallas 2, VANCOUVER 1

     

    Detroit 4, BOSTON 2

    The Detroit Red Wings snapped an eight-game regular-season winless streak against the Boston Bruins as the visitors when they defeated the Boston Bruins 4-2 last night.

     

    MONTREAL 5, NY Rangers 2

    In his return to action, Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber would score twice to help lift the Canadiens past the New York Rangers with a 5-2 win.

     

     

    Tampa Bay 5, FLORIDA 4 (OT)

     

    Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning score the 15th game winner, the most in the NHL since the 2017-18 season.

     

     

    Tampa Bay would go on to win the contest over the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime.

     

    Winnipeg 4, NEW JERSEY 3 (OT)

     

    Mark Schiefele would score the fifth regular-season overtime goal, the most in Winnipeg Jets franchise history with the Jets 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils last night.

     

    Philadelphia 4, PITTSBURGH 2

     

    Toronto 5, MINNESOTA 3

     

    The Toronto Maple Leafs would win their 10th road contest out of the 13 played thus far on the season with the 5-3 win over the Minnesota Wild.

    There were six different players that scored for the Arizona Coyotes when they would go on to rout the St. Louis Blues by the score of 6-1.

     

    EDMONTON 2, Vegas 1

    In the NWHL contest from last night, the Connecticut Whale took on the Boston Pride in the NWHL Twitter Game of the Week.

     

    The Boston Pride would halt the Minnesota Whitecaps win streak at six games with the Pride’s 5-1 win at TRIA Rink last night.

     

    The contest would be scoreless for the first 17 minutes until  Mallory Souliotis scoredher first NWHL goal thanks to an assist from Amanda Pelkey to give the Pride the 1-0 lead.

     

    Jillian Dempsey would make the contest 2-0 before the end of the first period.

     

    Amanda Boulier would score the lone goal for the Whitecaps in the contest in the second period.

     

    The Boston Pride’s Hayley Skarupa would score on the power-play with 35 seconds left in the second period to give the Pride the 3-1 lead.

     

    In the third period Gigi Marvin would score both goals to give the Pride cement the 5-1 lead.

     

    The Minnesota Whitecaps look to take the win from the Boston Pride today at in front of another sold-out crowd at 2 p.m., CT and the game can be seen on NWHL.zone/watch

     

    The Metropolitan Riveters take on the Connecticut Whale today at 3:30pm, ET from the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Pittsburgh.
