    2019-20 Preview:

    The Dallas Stars made some small improvements to their roster with the additions of forwards Corey Perry and Joe Pavelski. Both players bring Stanley Cup Finals experience to a team starved to return to the Stanley Cup Finals since their last appearance in 2000. Perry, who won the Cup in 2007 with Anaheim, and Pavelski, who lost in the Finals to Pittsburgh in 2016 while with San Jose, will add veteran leadership to a locker room that still has veteran forwards Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.

     

    Dallas also features a very young, but strong defensive core that will now feature veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera who will look to make himself a valuable member of the defense that features John Klingberg, Esa Lindell, and Miro Heiskanen.

     

    The lose of both Jason Spezza to Toronto and Mats Zuccarello to Minnesota were disappointing to the Stars, but after the mess that involved Spezza early in the 2018-19 season it was no surprise that Spezza opted to go elsewhere, while with Zuccarello one wondered if he would have stayed if he didn’t get injured and played more games for the team going into the playoffs.

    Dallas Stars v. St. Louis Blues

    Game 7 – Series Tied 3-3

     

    Game Recap:

    Heading back to St. Louis after tying the series at three a piece the Blues look to close out the Dallas Stars in Game 7 at home, and to start the game the Blues would control the tempo of the game. However, it would be the Stars who would be doing the bulk of the shooting in the period, but it would be the Blues striking first as Vince Dunn would let a blast go that would get past a screened Ben Bishop to make it 1-0. Then the Stars would be the beneficiaries of a lucky bounce as a Blues pass behind the net and hit off of the referee’s foot and to the front of the net where Mats Zuccarello would get the puck and wrist it past a confused Jordan Binnington to tie the game at one to end the first period.

     

    In the second period it would be all St. Louis as the Blues would control the tempo of the game for the majority of the second period that saw them outshoot Dallas 18-1. Also the Blues would draw two penalties against the Stars, but Dallas would play a very tight penalty kill that would prevent the Blues from getting any quality scoring chances.

     

    Going into the third period the Blues would continue playing with the momentum and hem the Stars in their own zone, but Dallas have a couple good shifts against the Blues but could only muster 3 shots the entire period compared to the Blues 13 shots. Neither team would score thus forcing overtime.

     

    In the first overtime period both teams would generate chances on net but both Ben Bishop and Jordan Binnington would stand tall in their respective nets.

     

    Going into double overtime the Dallas Stars would start strong and come close on a Jamie Benn wrap around, but could not get it in the net. Then Robert Thomas would drive the net and ring the pick off the post then would take a fortunate bounce off of Bishop’s back and land in the crease for Pat Maroon to tap in to win the game and the series for the Blues as they head to the Western Conference Finals.

    Game 6 – DAL Leads 3-2

     

    Game Recap:

    Heading into Dallas for Game 6 the Stars look to close out the St. Louis Bluesat home, but it would be the Blues controlling the play off the opening faceoff as they would get the Dallas crowd out of it early as Alex Pietrangelo would score 63 seconds into the game for an early 1-0 lead. The Blues would continue to control the play, but the Stars gain some momentum after killing the first powerplay of the game for the Blues and would result in them forcing a powerplay of their own which would see Tyler Seguin tap in the loose puck over the goal line to tie the game at one.

     

    In the second period both the Stars and the Blues would play a tightly contested chess match against eachother, but it would be the Blues breaking the tie as Oskar Sundqvist would fees David Perron in front of the net for a redirect into the net to make it 2-1 for the Blues going into the second intermission.

     

    Going into the third period the Blues would go back to how they played in the first period as the Blues would score two goals 33 seconds apart. First it would be Jaden Schwartz redirecting an Alexander Steen shot on net after Colton Parayko injured Ben Bishop with a really hard point shot. Then Sammy Blais would score his first career playoff goal while on a 2 on 0 that would chase Bishop out of the net and bring in Anton Khudobin as the Blues increase their lead to 4-1. The Blues would hold on and force Game 7 on Tuesday night.

    The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders last night by the score of 5-2 and in doing so, the Hurricanes have advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals and now await the winner of the Columbus Blue Jackets v. Boston Bruins series.

    The Dallas Stars are one win away from advancing to the Western Conference Finals after their 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues last night.

    Game 5 – Series Tied 2-2

     

    Game Recap:

    Going into Game 5 both the Dallas Stars and the St. Louis Blues look to gain the advantage in their now best of three series, and it would be the Stars who would get things started as Jason Spezza would net his third of playoffs in the first three minutes of the game to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.

     

    To start the second period the Stars would come out buzzing and kill the Blues powerplay, and then a little over six minutes into the period Alexander Radulov wouldnfeedva beautiful pass to Esa Lindell who would backhand it off of Blues defender Jay Bouwmeester to make it 2-0. The Blues would get two more powerplay opportunities, but would squander both of them as the Stars would play very toght hockey to prevemt amy opportunities.

     

    Then going into the third period the Blues would force the play, and it would pay off as while attacking the net Jaden Schwartz would find a loose pick and throw it towards the goal past Ben Bishop to cut the Stars lead to one. Then 21 seconds after scoring, Jamie Benn would be called for hooking, but the Stars penalty kill was perfect once again. The Blues would keep pushing, but the Stars woild hold on to win the game 2-1 to take a 3-2 series lead.

    STL Leads 2-1

     

    Game Recap:

    The St. Louis Blues come into Game 4 looking to take home ice away from the Dallas Stars again, and extend their series lead. However, it would be the Stars who would start the game aggressively and get the first five shots on goal, but it would be a Jason Dickinson high sticking penalty that would give the Blues the powerplay and 18 seconds into the powerplay Vladimir Tarasenko would score his fifth of the playoffs to give the Blues an early 1-0 lead. Dickinson would make it up to his team though as he would get the puck past Jordan Binnington to tie the game at one a piece. Then in the final 3 minutes of the first period, Tyler Bozak would take an ill advised offensive zone penalty which would lead to Jason Spezza blasting a slapshot past a screened Binnington to give the Stars a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

     

    In the second period the Stars would continue their dominate play from the first period as John Klingberg would score to make it 3-1 for Dallas off of a very beautiful wrister that would get past Binnington who has looked spectacular while under seige during this game so far. Then later in the period the Stars would continue their dominating play as Roope Hintz would score his fifth of the playoffs as the Stars head into the second intermission leading 4-1.

     

    Going into the third period the St. Louis Blues played with a lot more urgency and would outshoot the Dallas Stars 12-5 in the period, but Ben Bishop would stand tall stopping all but one shot to guide the Stars to a 4-2 victory and even the series at two a piece.

    The St. Louis Blues came out with a much faster start than in Game 2, with Jaden Schwartz opening the scoring. While Alexander Radulov was able to tie the game at 1 for the Dallas Stars on a great play on the power play, the Blues seemed like they were in control of the game.

     

    The second period brought more of the same, but the tide seemed to be tilting in Dallas’s favor, but the Blues’ third line had an amazing shift, with great plays by Vince Dunn and Robert Thomas to set up an easy tap in for Tyler Bozak.

     

    The fireworks really started in the third, with teams trading quick goals. Andrew Cogliano scored to tie the game at 2, but Alex Pietrangelo followed that up with another goal to give the Blues a late 3-2 lead. However, Alex giveth, Alex taketh away as a poor clearing attempt directly set up Dallas’s third goal. Fortunately Pat Maroon knocked down featherweight Esa Lindell, and sniped the game winning goal. Game 4 is slated for Wednesday at 930 PM eastern in Dallas.

    The Blues and Stars had an eventful first period, with Roope Hintz scoring early to make it 1-0:

    Suffice it to say, the Blues should not have allowed this goal.

    Dallas extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Miro Heiskanen:

    While Colton Parayko cut the lead to 2-1, the Stars put away much hope of a comeback with Mattias Janmark helping Dallas reclaim a 2 goal lead:

    Suffice. It. To. Say…well, you know.

    The Blues played rather poorly in the second but managed to keep the score at 3-1. Jaden Schwartz scored early in the third to give the Blues some life, but St. Louis’s complete, and honestly baffling, inability to do anything on the power play (0/5 today), quelled any thoughts of a comeback, as Hintz added his second as an empty netter with 3 seconds left.

    Game 3 is slated for 8PM Eastern in Dallas, Monday night.

    St. Louis Blues – Dallas Stars Game 1 Recap

    Game 1 of the Blues-Stars second round series saw St. Louis take a 1-0 with a goal by unlikely scorer, Robby Fabbri. Play was relatively even through the rest of the first, and the Blues took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

    The second period brought more action with Jason Spezza capitalizing on a great pass to barely get the puck by Jordan Binnington and tie the game at 1. This lead was short-lived though when Vladimir Tarasenko drew a penalty on Roman Polak, then proceeded to immediately score.

    Leading 2-1 in the third period, Tarasenko scored one of the more spectacular goals I have seen:

    Jamie Benn managed to score a goal late to make it 3-2, but it was meaningless – not only because it should not have counted since the referee blew the whistle prior to the puck entering the net, but then signaled a goal, and Toronto’s review team, um, concurred, but also that they were not able to tie it at 3, despite a few chances at the end.

    The next game is Saturday at 3PM Eastern in St. Louis.

    St. Louis Blues – Dallas Stars Round 2 Preview

    Mike: “Ok, Blues – Stars preview, you’re up.”

    Me: “Oh…uh…I wasn’t really expecting the Blues to win, so I think I used up all the words I know in the last preview.”

    Mike: “…”

    Me: “…”

    Hello round 2, it’s been a while. The Blues and Stars met four times during the regular season, with the Blues winning just one game. Before digging deeper into the season series, as someone who has been referred to as both ‘intelligent’ and ‘artificial’, I’m always one to extol the virtues of algorithmic literacy.  I always look for hockey analysis rooted in metrics (albeit arcane, for now), rather than atavistic practices like ‘hockey guys’ simply spouting platitudes like ‘this team will win because they want it more,’ as if by fiat. To that end, Micah Blake McCurdy (Twitter @IneffectiveMath), who focuses on hockey analytics and data visualization, did a remarkable job predicting first round series (and showing that Tampa Bay was not the Cup favorite all ‘experts’ seemed to think they were). Let’s check in with Mr. McCurdy regarding the second round:

    54% Dallas, 46% St. Louis? Whatever, what does this guy know? This is hockey, not bean-counting.

    While the Stars did take 3 out of 4 games during the regular season, similar to last series against the Jets, this does not tell the whole story, because the Blues were rarely at full-strength. In the first game, on January 8, the Blues were without Jordan “sangfroid” Binnington, and this was a particularly ignominious defeat for Jake Allen:

    Though Allen did play well after he blew the game, it was not enough. Binnington did start the next 3 games (winning just 1), but the Blues were without Brayden Schenn – a critical part of the top line at the time – for both of the losses. Now I’m not saying that Schenn’s presence is going to be a panacea for the Blues’ struggles against the Stars, but he will absolutely make a big difference.

    Aside from Schenn (and the always-noted goaltending battle), the keys to the series essentially boil down to:

    1. Will Vladimir Tarasenko score? and
    2. Will Jamie Benn not score?

    Benn scored 5 goals in the Stars’ three wins, so keeping him at least relatively off the scoresheet is critical to the Blues’ success. Similarly, Tarasenko seems to rise to the occasion against Dallas, scoring 3 goals this season.

    It’s as simple as that. I’m taking the Blues in 6, and once again, if that happens, I’ll tell you that I’m omniscient (oh, by the way, the Blues won the last series, so allow me to say it: I’m omniscient), but as always, if I’m wrong, let’s not talk about it.

    Ultimately, I believe this is going to be a hard fought series, with neither team really having the upper-hand. If the Blues happen to lose, I’ll be upset, but I will not feel angry or indignant unless one of their fans happens to speak derisively about one particular topic:

    Ok. Fine. It’s on now.
