    Time: 7p EST

    Station: NBC Sports Washington

    Preview:

The Washington Capitals play host for the final time in this home stretch before they begin their Western Canada road trip as they take on the Florida Panthers who so far have not won a game in this young 2018-19 season.

    Florida Panthers:

    Projected Lineup:

Evgenii Dadonov – Aleksander Barkov – Nick Bjugstad

Vincent Trocheck – Colton Sceviour – Jonathan Huberdeau

Frank Vatrano – Jared McCann – Denis Malgin

Mike Hoffman – Juho Lammikko – Troy Brouwer

    Keith Yandle – Aaron Ekblad

    Mark Pysyk – Alexander Petrovic

    Bogdan Kiselevich – MacKenzie Weegar

    James Reimer

    Michael Hutchinson

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Quiet the home crowd

The Panthers are going to look to want tonget on the board only and silence the home crowd in DC. By doing so they can take control of the tempo of the game, and work towards getting their first win of the season.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Ovechkin – Evgeny Kuznetsov – Brett Connolly

Jakub Vrana – Nicklas Backstrom – TJ Oshie

Chandler Stephenson – Lars Eller – Andre Burakovsky

Dmitrij Jaskin – Nic Dowd – Devante Smith-Pelly

    Michal Kempny – John Carlson

    Dmitry Orlov – Matt Niskanen

    Christian Djoos – Brooks Orpik

    Braden Holtby

    Pheonix Copley

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Play a full 60 minutes

This is the biggest key for the Capitals. Against Toronto they laid off im the 3rd period and it costed them a victory. With the knowledge that Florida is looking for their first win of thw season, the Capitals should play with renewed urgency, and take it to the Panthers the full 60 minutes.

    2. Stay out of the penalty box

Sonfar the Capitals have shot themselves in the foot with bad penalties, especially by Jakub Vrana in the offensive zone, that the momentum that they are building for themselves is lost and have to retreat to the penalty kill.

    Hits                1                   8

    PP                 0/1                 N/A

    Analysis:

This was an ok period for the Capitals. The Rangers are playing aggressive and the Capitals will have to take advantage when the Rangers get a little over aggressive, which has happened a couple of times in the Rangers zone. Great response by the Capitals with the tying goal after the Rangers took an early lead.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to do a better job of of controlling the tempo of the game. The Capitals had spurts where they controlled it, but they let the Rangers back in it too many times. The Capitals also need to keep pushing the play in the Rangers zone.

    Second Period:

Rangers Penalty – 2:09 – Brett Howden 2 minutes for Tripping

Capitals PPG – 3:32 – Alex Ovechkin (5) from John Carlson (5) and Brett Connolly (4)

Capitals PPG – 17:01 – Alex Ovechkin (6) from John Carlson (6) and Nicklas Backstrom (8)

Rangers Penalty – 19:32 – Brendan Smith 2 minutes for Interference

    End of 2nd – NYR – 2        WAS – 3

    Shots               27                 27

    Faceoffs          23                 22

    Hits                 8                    14

    PP                   1/3                 2/2 * 3rd in progress

    Analysis:

This was a good period for the Capitals, but it was a better period for the Rangers. The Rangers out shot the Capitals 18-13 that period, and forced the Capitals to take some penalties. However the Capitals forced some penalties upon the Rangers as well, and got two powerplay goals and are entering the 3rd period with time left on their 3rd powerplay.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to capitalize on this powerplay to start the period and use it to take the momentum of this game and put it in their favor. The Capitals need to also play a full 20 minutes to finish off the Rangers.

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty – 9:20 – Nathan Walker 2 minutes for Holding

Rangers PPG – 10:25 – Chris Kreider (4) from Neal Pionk (3) and Mika Zibanejad (2)

Rangers Penalty – 14:43 – Kevin Hayes 2 minutes for High Sticking

    End of 3rd – NYR – 3         WAS – 3

    Shots              32                   36

    Faceoffs        30                    33

    Hits               13                     21

    PP                 2/4                    2/4

    Overtime:

Capitals Goal – 2:18 – Matt Niskanen (1) from Evgeny Kuznetsov (6) and TJ Oshie (3)

    End of OT – NYR – 3         WAS – 4

    Shots              32                   38

    Faceoffs        31                    35

    Hits               14                     23

    PP                 2/4                    2/4

    Analysis:

A good win for the Capitals despite blowing their one goal lead and needing overtime to win this game. The Capitals out shot the Rangers in both the 3rd period and in overtime combined, but they had their defensive relapses in their own zone plus some bad penalties taken again let the Rangers stay in this one. The Capitals need to clean up the play in their own zone, especially in front of their own net as they are giving up too many chances and goals right in the slot area.

    Next Up:

    Washington (3-2-1 7pts) v. Florida (0-2-2 2pts)

    • Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers went on to defeat the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 in overtime.Connor McDavid scored twice in the contest and in doing so, McDavid continued a streak of attributing to all of the Oilers goals thus far on the season. The NHL record for most points by a player at any point is 15, a mark set by Jaromir Jagr in the 1999-2000 season.
    • Kyle Palmieri would score for New Jersey and became the first player in League history to score the opening goal for his team in four straight games to open up the season. Only one player has started off with five and that mark belongs to Johnny Bucyk during the 1965-66 season.

New Jersey would go on to win the contest 3-0 over the Dallas Stars.

Keith Kinkaid would go on to register 24 saves to lead the Devils to a 4-0-0 record on the season thus far. • Vegas Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury won his 407th game to move into a tie for tenth place with Glenn Hall on the all-time list for wins by a goaltender.

    PP                 0/1                 0/1

    Analysis:

    Capitals (Michael):

The Capitals got a good start by getting a quick goal 18 seconds into the game. Plus the Capitals are doing a good job of playing the body and making it difficult on the Maple Leafs. However, they are leaving the slot open, and the Maple Leafs are taking advantage of that, but Braden Holtby has been on top of his game.

    Toronto (Steve):

The Maple Leafs played a lot of this period in the Caps zone. Played a pretty decent defensive game and a solid puck possession game. There was not much to hate about this period. Other than 18 seconds into the period a defensive lapse led to a very easy tap in.

    Need to Do:

    Capitals (Michael):

The Capitals need to play better in their own zone and protect the crease area better. They allowed the Maple Leafs one too many golden chances to tie this game and they need to play tighter. The Capitals also need to break through Toronto’s neutral zone trap and generate some more chances in the offensive zone.

    Toronto (Steve):

The Maple Leafs need to continue to play their game. They hit a post and Holtby robbed Kasperi Kapanen point blank as well as Zach Hyman and John Tavares. This game could easily be 2-1 Toronto, stick to the game plan.

    Second Period:

Maple Leafs Goal – 3:30 – Kasperi Kapanen (2) from Ron Hainsey (2) and Auston Matthews (4)

Maple Leafs Penalty – 4:17 – John Tavares 2 minutes for Tripping

Capitals PPG – 4:39 – Evgeny Kuznetsov (4) from Nicklas Backstrom (6) and Alex Ovechkin (3)

Capitals Penalty – 8:22 – Lars Eller 2 minutes for Slashing

Maple Leafs Goal – 18:53 – Par Lindholm (1) from Jake Gardiner (3) and Connor Brown (1)

    End of 2nd – TOR – 2        WAS – 2

    Shots               14                  19

    Faceoffs          16                 19

    Hits                 10                  19

    PP                   0/2                  1/2

    Analysis:

    Capitals (Michael):

This was a very good period for the Capitals. They tightened up defensively and capitalized on their lone powerplay of the period. However, they did give up two goals this period, and gave up the second one late in the period which let’s Toronto back into the game.

    Toronto (Steve):

The Maple Leafs took a step back this period. Too many giveaways against a dangerous team like Washington. Toronto was trying to be too pretty. Washington came out to push the tempo and did exactly that. Yet the score remains 2-2.

    Need to Do:

    Capitals (Michael):

The Capitals need to stick to the script. They tightened up defensively and caused the Maple Leafs to cough up the puck several times, but a defensive lapse late in the period allowed the Leafs to tie the game at 2.

    Toronto (Steve):

Puck possession is the game plan and the Leafs had zero of it in that period. They need to attack the defence don’t let them carry the puck out of the zone. Be aggressive. Cycle. Don’t be fancy.

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty – 5:47 – Michal Kempny 2 minutes for High Sticking

Maple Leafs PPG – 6:28 – Josh Leivo (1) from Andreas Johnsson (1) and Jake Gardiner (4)

Maple Leafs Penalty – 7:44 – Nikita Zaitsev 2 minutes for Holding

Maple Leafs Goal – 18:21 – Auston Matthews (10) from Kasperi Kapanen (4) and Morgan Reilly (10)

    End of 3rd – TOR – 4         WAS – 2

    Shots              28                   27

    Faceoffs        23                    26

    Hits               14                     28

    PP                 1/3                    1/3

    Analysis:

    Capitals (Michael):

After two strong periods for the Capitals, they laid a dud in the third. For the first 15 minutes of the third period the Maple Leafs dominated the Capitals. However, after the Leafs took the lead for the first time tonight, that was when the Capitals started forcing the play. Too little too late though as Auston Matthews would net his 10th of the season to secure the 4-2 win for the Leafs. Capitals need to play a full 60 minutes to guarantee a win in this League, and the Capitals did not do that tonight.

    Toronto (Steve):

The Leafs once again came out flying throwing 13 shots at  Braden Holtby and containing Alex Ovechkin, who was clearly frustrated. The depth of the leafs came through tonight with Kasperi Kapanen , Par Lindholm and Josh Leivo and of course Matthews puts the icing on the cake. Frederik Andersen was shaky the first 2 periods but came up big in the 3rd. The defence looked solid tonight and its beginning to round in to form. Igor Ozhiganov looks like he’s is hard to take the 6th defender spot hard and looked fantastic tonight.

    Toronto : 4-1-0 for 8 points

    Washington: 2-1-1 for 5 points

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals meet for their first meeting of the season, in what has the making to be a HIGH OCTANE OFFENSIVE affair.  Toronto comes off back to back road wins in Chicago 7-6 in OT and Dallas 7-4. The first 4 games have shown that almost any defensive problem that the Leafs face they can outscore. It’s also been the Matthews, Marner and Tavares show, the 3 have combined for 24 points in the first 4 games.  Tonight will be a huge challenge for the young Leafs team.

While Washington has come flying out of the gates after their huge Stanley Cup last season. The attack is led by none other than the Russian sensation Alex Ovechkin, and followed up by Evgeni Kuznetsov, TJ Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson just to name a few. The offence is going to come fast and hard from the Stanley Cup Champions. Brayden Holtby has been fantastic to open the season, opening with a shutout and after getting roughed up in the 2nd game against Pens, Holtby found his groove once again only allowing 2 to the Golden Knights.

4 Keys to Winning in Washington:

    1. Stop Ovechkin
      1. Ovi has been a Leaf killer his whole career, now if the Leafs are going to win this game they need to shut him down even a small amount. Watch the slapper from the circle and Ovi`s speed and stickhandling
    2. Do not get into a scoring showdown with the champs
      1. Don`t wanna play no defence and all offence again this team. I can almost guarantee you they win.
    3. Depth Scoring
      1. Leivo, Kadri, Brown, Gauthier, Ennis need to build off their performance in Dallas. Lots of zone time and scoring chances. I can`t repeat this enough every stinking game.
    4. Don`t Take Dumb Penalties & Draw penalties
      1. You can`t risk it against the Capitals power play, but make them work against your power play.
