    Mike’s STH Xperience – Celebrating 894

Welcome to Mike’s Season Ticket Holder (STH) Xperience!

This season is my first one as a Season Ticket holder for the Washington Capitals, and in place of doing Caps Game Recaps, I’ll be sharing my experience being a STH during the 2024-25 season. Here I’ll be sharing all of the photos that I take during pregame warmups, along with any FB/IG Reels and TikToks I create at the games.

I will also be doing this for any other games I may go to, whether it’s in Hershey for the Bears, or at other NHL venues for games.

The Washington Capitals honor their 2018 Stanley cup victory with a visit from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Acquired from Chicago on February 19th, 2018, defenseman Michal Kempny helped solidify the Capitals blueline as they went on to win the 2018 #StanleyCup. In 4 seasons with the Capitals, Kempny recorded 48 points in 166 games.

    Thoughts on the Game

The unthinkable became reality. Alex Ovechkin scored two goals to tie Wayne Gretzky with 894 career NHL goals on a night where the Washington Capitals hosted their final Eras Night as they honored the ALLCAPS and Stanley Cup era.

It was such a riot after Ovechkin scored 894. You could tell they were trying to get him the hat trick the rest of the game to get 895, but Spencer Knight was not having it. Plus, it was really hilarious when everyone was booing Knight every time he stopped an Ovechkin shot.

Overall, great night, and hopefully Ovechkin scores on Sunday to get this chase over with.

Reekie was later traded by Tampa Bay to the Washington Capitals on March 21st, 1994, and he spent the next 9 years with the Capitals until being traded to Chicago on January 17th, 2002.

Reekie recorded 75 points in 515 games played with the Capitals, and was a part of the team that went to the 1998 Stanley Cup Final.

    Thoughts on the Game

The regular season is coming to a close soon, and with only four home games left the odds of seeing Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record at home grows slim, but I’m remaining hopeful.

As for the game itself, this is definitely one the Capitals wish they could have back, especially Logan Thompson. Jakob Chychrun scored a pair to reach 20 goals and Aliaksei Protas scored shorthanded to reach 30 goals for the first time in his career. So definitely some positives, but the Capitals will need to turn it around as this was their third straight loss.

The other positive, Ovechkin netting goal 890 to bring himself within 5 goals of breaking Gretzky’s record. I’m still hopeful that he breaks it soon.

Richard Zednik was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 10th Round of the NHL Draft in 1994, and in his rookie season played a pivotal role in the Capitals making it to the 1998 Stanley Cup Final. Zednik was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in March of 2001, and then traded back to the Capitals by the Canadiens in July of 2006 before being traded to the New York Islanders in February of 2007.

Zednik played a combined 289 games recording 69 goals and 134 points with the Capitals. Zednik signed with the Florida Panthers during the summer of 2007 and spent his last two seasons in the NHL with them.

    Thoughts on the Game

Boy was this a doozy of a game lol. The first period was just wild, and the bounces were even crazier. Definitely resulted in three goals because of those bounces. The second period was just as fun with Tom Wilson scoring seven seconds into the period and then Dylan Strome scoring 50 seconds later. Logan Thompson was definitely put to the test this game against the Panthers, but he held strong.

No goals from Alex Ovechkin, but man did he have some really great opportunities to score. Former Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek survives another game without allowing Ovechkin to score a goal against him.

Drafted in the 4th Round of the 1991 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, forward Mike Knuble won the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 1998. Knuble was traded to the New York Rangers in October of 1998, and played with Wayne Gretzky in what was his final NHL season. Knuble scored two goals that were assisted by Gretzky that season.

After 4 seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Knuble signed with the Washington Capitals in July of 2009. Knuble spent 3 seasons with the Capitals playing in 220 games recording 59 goals and 52 assists for 111 points. Knuble assisted on 14 goals scored by Alex Ovechkin during his time with the Capitals.

Knuble is the only player in NHL history to be teammates with both Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin.

    Thoughts on the Game

This was a fun one from start to finish. Instead of taking my normal spot by the Capitals bench, I was in the penalty box to take in pregame warmups. Wasn’t able to take the normal pictures that I’d normally take, but still a fun experience.

Then, I got to sit in section 218, which is right under my normal section of 420, so the view was the same, but just lower. I got to spend the game with my dad, my friend Sasha (who is also one of my editors for the So Close docu-series), and my buddy Greenie (who I play hockey with). It was really great, especially getting to see Alex Ovechkin score a goal with my dad, as we hadn’t been to a game together in a long time.

Overall, a great game, and a great experience.

The Washington Capitals return home with a matchup against the Detroit Red Wings.

    #Caps50Facts

In 1998 the Washington Capitals did the impossible as they made it to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history. However, it was not going to be an easy series as they faced the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. The Capitals but up a valiant effort, even coming close to winning Game 2, but the Red Wings experience and poise swept the Capitals in four games to claim their second straight Stanley Cup.

    Jersey Tracking

    Thoughts on the Game

It’s good to be home as the Washington Capitals kick off their final extended homestand for the season as they finish their regular season series with the Detroit Red Wings. Game started off a bit slow, but Dylan Strome would score to open things for the Capitals, but Dylan Larkin scored to tie things at one for the Red Wings.

Then after a scoreless second period, the Capitals offense woke up with goals from Pierre-Luc Dubois, Tom Wilson, and Connor McMichael to take give the Capitals the 4-1 victory. Fun fact, Capitals in-game host Mike Ploger came into my section, and was supposed to do the “Unleash the Fury” but shortly after he came into my section, Dubois scored, and then Wilson scored. So that was a fun one.

No goals from Alex Ovechkin, but we did see Tom Wilson record his first career 30 goal season, so that is a plus there.

    #Caps50Facts

Drafted in the 4th Round of the 2010 NHL Draft, the Washington Capitals selected goaltender Philipp Grubauer, and would play a pivotal role in the Capitals making it the the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. Grubauer started the first two games of the first round against Columbus, and despite giving the Capitals two solid games, they lost both in overtime. Braden Holtby would take over between the pipes, and lead the Capitals to becoming Stanley Cup Champions.

Many view Grubauer starting the first two games of the playoffs as a way of getting Holtby back on track, and it worked. In 6 years with the Capitals, Grubauer played in 101 games and had a 43-31-11 record.

After winning the Stanley Cup, the Capitals traded Grubauer to Colorado on June 22nd, 2018. In July of 2021, Grubauer signed with the Seattle Kraken as a free agent.

    Thoughts on the Game

Before the Capitals head out to California for the week, they played host to the Seattle Kraken, and for the second game in a row, it was weak first period for the Capitals, but the second and third periods were once again, really strong periods for the them. Plus, Alex Ovechkin getting the empty netter for goal 886 was just the cherry on top.

Also, the other highlight of the night was getting to skate on the Capital One Arena ice for the STH Skate. It was so awesome being able to skate on NHL ice, let alone on the ice that I always dreamed of playing hockey on. Hopefully that can happen one day.

    Thoughts on the Game

Not a great start, but what a great finish for the Capitals. The Red Wings came out hot, but after Taylor Raddysh scored late in the first, you could feel the momentum swing in the Capitals favor. A hell of game from both Tom Wilson and Aliaksei Protas, who became the first two Capitals to record two shorthanded point since March 8th 2006 when Ivan Majesky did it against the Pittsburgh Penguins (which I was also at that game and it has a really funny story to it about Majesky too).

Overall, great game with a great result. Alex Ovechkin didn’t score, but it’s exciting seeing him getting close and seeing the goal tracker back at Capital One Arena.

Also, Some really great stories at the Chalk Talk featuring Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green, and Karl Alzner.

    Thoughts on the Game

This game had more meaning to me than most games this season, and the reason for that is because on Friday I was laid off from my job, along with several others, due to DOGE and what is happening to the Federal Government. This game was always planned to be a group outing with my Dacek Ball Hockey group, but I also worked with a lot of the people that are part of the program, so when myself and others got laid off, I made a point to make this more of a celebration than being about the game.

For the game itself, it was a good one. Tom Wilson got the Gordie Howe hat trick, and the Capitals got the win. No goals from Alex Ovechkin, but that’s ok. The important part is that everyone had fun.

For anyone interested, the Dacek Ball Hockey Group meets up every Monday at 6p ET at the Nancy Dacek Community Center in Rockville, MD. You must be 18 years or older to play. For more information, email Michael at TXHThockey@gmail.com with the subject line “Dacek Ball Hockey”.

Another game, another loss for the Washington Capitals at home. This time against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It looked like the Capitals got the first goal, but with the successful coach’s challenge, the Lightning were able to swing the momentum their way. Plus, with the help of a horrible tripping call against Tom Wilson, where it clearly looked like a dive by Nikita Kucherov, the Lightning were able to take the lead and never look back.

However, despite the loss, Alex Ovechkin scored his 884th career NHL goal, and is now 11 goals away from passing Wayne Gretzky.

    Thoughts on the Game

For the Washington capitals, this was inevitable. Going into the break the Capitals were not playing their best hockey, but they were still winning games and getting points in the standings with overtime losses. This was the second game in a row the Capitals lost in regulation, and first time since late November to lose two straight at home as well.

The Capitals didn’t look their best and the St. Louis Blues made them pay for it. And quite frankly, I’m ok with it. the Caps got standing points when they really didn’t deserve them, so these loses, I see them as a wake up call to the team. Let’s see how they turn it around on Saturday against Tampa Bay.

Also, side note, I really liked seeing the Blues in their Winter Classic jerseys. More of that please.
