Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Wednesday, October 17th, 2018.

There were eight contests in the NHL yesterday…

    • Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers went on to defeat the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 in overtime.Connor McDavid scored twice in the contest and in doing so, McDavid continued a streak of attributing to all of the Oilers goals thus far on the season. McDavid became the first player in NHL history to record a point on all nine of the team’s goals to begin the season. The NHL record for most points by a player at any point is 15, a mark set by Jaromir Jagr in the 1999-2000 season.
    • Kyle Palmieri would score for New Jersey and became the first player in League history to score the opening goal for his team in four straight games to open up the season. Only one player has started off with five and that mark belongs to Johnny Bucyk during the 1965-66 season.

New Jersey would go on to win the contest 3-0 over the Dallas Stars.

Keith Kinkaid would go on to register 24 saves to lead the Devils to a 4-0-0 record on the season thus far. This is the fourth time in franchise history that the Devils have won at least their first four games to start off the season. The last time they started off 4-0-0 was during the 1995-96 season.

    • Vegas Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury won his 407th game to move into a tie for tenth place with Glenn Hall on the all-time list for wins by a goaltender.

The original Ottawa Senators had more wins (63) within 100 games. The Golden Knights play their 100th regular season game on November 11th against the Boston Bruins.

    • Sebastian Aho and the Carolina Hurricanes fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2. Aho extended his point-scoring streak to seven games and became the sixth player to record at least a point in each of the team’s first seven games to begin a season.

    • Montreal Canadiens F Jesperi Kotkaniemi has one assist and two shot on goal in just under 14 minutes of ice time. The Canadiens would lose 5-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Bell Centre Wednesday night. Zadina, who is a native of the Czech Republic, was on loan to QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads last season and as such is eligible for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
    • The injury to Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry could be an opportunity for Max Comtois to make the Ducks roster. Comtois, the second round pick of the 2017 NHL Draft, scored two goals in Anaheim’s 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Honda Center. Comtois’ second goal was set up by Isac Lundestrom, the 23rd pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Lundestrom is also looking to make the Ducks roster with Ryan Kesler unliekly to begin the season as he recovers from offseason hip surgery.
    • Ryan Suter looks to be in season form after the Minnesota Wild’s 4-3 victory of the Winnipeg Hets at Xcel Energy Center. Suter registered 21:22 of on-ice time and had two shots on goal in his first action since he broke his right ankle on March 31.

  • 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning Preview

    TB

Last Season: 54-23-5 113 pts (1st in Atlantic Division; Lost in Eastern Conference Final)

    Key Additions: D Cameron Gaunce

Key Departures: D Andrej Sustr, F Erik Condra, F Chris Kunitz, G Peter Budaj, and GM Steve Yzerman

    Top Questions Facing the Lightning:

    1. How will Steve Yzerman’s departure affect the team?

This past week Steve Yzerman shockingly stepped down as General Manager citing family reasons. Having this happen so suddenly, especially with a highly respected hockey mind like Yzerman’s, and during the week that training camp starts. One does have to wonder though is this could also put Jon Cooper on the hot seat.

    2. Can the Tampa Bay Lightning rise above?

After three Conference Finals appearances in the last 4 seasons, and with Cooper having a new coaching staff under him for a third consecutive season, one has to ask if this team can rise above and finally get themselves back to the Stanley Cup Finals, or if this is their breaking point. With Salary Cap restraints creeping up on them, this could be a Cup or bust season for the Lightning.
