Today is Tuesday, November 6th, 2018, and these are your news and notes..

    There were five contests yesterday…

Boston Bruins Brad Marchand recorded his 13th overtime goal to give the Bruins a record of 8-4-2 thus far on the season. Marchand sits at a five-way tie for 10th place in NHL for overtime winners.

Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello became the third general manager in League history to reach the 2400 game plateau. He trails only David Poile and Glen Sather in the 2400+ game mark. Lamoriello won three Stanley Cup championships as the GM of the New Jersey Devils.

For the Montreal Canadiens, Joel Armia was the only player to score in the shootout and with the win, Montreal is now 8-4-2 on the season.

Brian Boyle netted a hat trick in the contest, the first in his career. Boyle, who recently announced that his cancer is in remission, netted this hat-trick on Hockey Fights Cancer night in Pittsburgh.

Washington Capitals F Alex Ovechkin netted his 234th career power-play goal to give the Capitals the victory. This would be Ovechkin’s fifth power-play goal in the season. Since Ovechkin’s debut in the 2005-06 season, Ovechkin has 99 more power-play goals than the next closest player.

Connor McDavid in the contest would extend his point streak to eight games, six shy of his personal best at 14 games.

  • The Meaning of Being a Team

As we all learned late yesterday, members of the Ottawa Senators were filmed by an Uber driver while in Arizona during their road trip. In the video you can see the players talking and joking about the coaching staff and the meetings that take place for the team.

Now this doesn’t come as a major surprise that this is happening in Ottawa given the recent track record of drama that has engulfed the team since the 2017-18 season, but the level of dissention that we can see brewing is truly unheard of. It is common to hear of coaches or specific players losing the locker room and their support, which in effect causes change, but this one is much different as it is also evident that the owner of the Senators, Eugene Melnyk, has lost the entire organization.

Now many have asked why the NHL has not stepped in to fix the issue, and the answer is rather simple. The NHL does not own the team, and unless the Ottawa Senators become a financial mess, and on the verge of folding, then the League can become involved like they have with the Arizona Coyotes, and a couple others to keep them be stable until they could get new ownership. From a financial standpoint the Senators are not being poorly managed, but that still doesn’t change the fact that Melnyk needs to sell the Senators so they can all get a fresh start.

What can the NHL do? Honestly nothing, but have conversations with Eugene Melnyk and the other owners about the situation.  However, there will come a point where something needs to happen.

How about the players on the video? What should happen with them? For a situation like this it’s rather difficult. There will obviously be team imposed punishments for the players behavior, but for something like this the League may not be able to do anything, unless the CBA states other wise.

But this also begs a bigger question from someone like me and that is this. If you aren’t happy with the team you’re on, why don’t you say something to those in charge of the team? It’s not the League’s job to fix the problem for you. You need to speak to those in charge of your team, be it the Captain, the Coach, or even the General Manager, or the Owner. Despite what people think, they will talk to you and listen to your grievances and do what they can to help fix the issue for you, but doing it behind those people’s backs is not the way to do it.

Hopefully soon we’ll see real change in Ottawa, but until then this will be a bumpy ride.

Tampa Bay has won each of their first seven contests against foes from the Eastern Conference for the first time in franchise history.

The League record for this mark is 12 contests.

The New York Rangers scored two goals in 19 seconds and G Henrik Lundqvist made 39 saves to give the Rangers their third consecutive win.  This was the fifth time the Rangers would score two goals in the first minute of the contest and the first since March 24, 1982, when they did it against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

For Lundqvist, he earned his 435th career win and moved within two wins of tying Jacques Plante for 437 career wins.

Cam Fowler in this contest recorded his first career hat-trick, scoring the game-winner just 39 seconds into overtime. Fowler became only the seventh defenceman in NHL history to complete the hat trick with an overtime winner.

These goals would move him into a second-place tie with Francois Beauchemin on the franchise all-time list among defencemen.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Tuesday, October 16th, 2018.

There were four contests in the NHL yesterday.

    • The Montreal Canadiens scoring was hot in their 7-3 rout of the Detroit Red Wings, their sixth consecutive win over Detroit.Johnathan Drouin recorded his fourth multi-goal game of his career and his first as a member of the Canadiens, one of which occurred on his second career penalty shot attempt.

Brendan Gallagher would also register a goal in the contest, his 11th goal in 18 career games versus Detroit. He has also scored seven times in the current six game win streak against the Red Wings.

Tomas Plekanec would also play in his 1,000th career NHL game.

    • Plekanec also became the fourth player in Montreal history to record a goal while in his 1,000th NHL game.
    • In Toronto, the Toronto Maple Leafs are continuing to be an offensive machine with the line of Kasperi Kapanen, Auston Matthews, and Patrick Marleau all found the score sheet. The line combined for three goals and two assists in the Maple Leafs 7-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.Kapanen entered the season with ten points in 55 career games. Kapanen has register four goals and four assists thus far this season in just seven games.

With Patrick Marleau also scoring his first goal of the season on a power-play, he now ranks seventh place in game wining goals, sitting five shy from Brendan Shanahan (109).

Auston Matthews has been on fire thus far for the season and this game was no different. Matthews registered his seventh straight multi-point game and at least one point in the last 17 regular-season contests. By registering his seventh straight multi-point game in as many games, he joined a very special class.

    • Ottawa Seantors D Maxime Lajoie and F Brady Tkachuk scored two of Ottawa’s first four straight goals to lift the Senators to their second straight win and a record of 3-2-1 on the season in a 4-1 rout of the Dallas Stars. This game would also be noteworthy for Lajoie as no Senators defenceman has registered more points in their first six games with the franchise.
    • In the final contest of the evening, Nashville Predators Filip Forsberg scored the game-winner to give himself four goals and two assists as well as giving Nashville their third consecutive win on the season. Nashville, 5-1-0, has earned at least five wins in six games for the third time in franchise history and the second time in four seasons (5-1-0 in 2015-16). • An Impact on Life: The Ryan Dzingel Story.

I am a proud Toronto Maple Leafs fan, who loves the rivalry with the Ottawa Senators. I’ve been around when the Daniel Alfredsson and Mats Sundin stick throwing incident happened and when my Leafs enjoyed eliminating the Sens from the playoffs year after year. On good days I will say how the Sens have some nice pieces who could turn out great and make this rivalry interesting. On bad days your lucky to get that.

But for this I will put all that aside because I strongly believe we all can learn something from Ryan Dzingel. In a world where negative media is all we see this will be different. I’ve always loved Dzingel’s game, plays fast with some grit and a good 2 way game. A late bloomer who was drafted in the 7th round in 2011 and has developed into a great centerman with a HUGE heart.

It all started a few years back, 2 young Sens fans were walking out of a restaurant with their family and spotted Dzingel waiting to enter. Dzingel took the time out his day and talked with the 2 young fans for about 30 minutes and that was the beginning of an amazing bond.

Let me give you a little background on these 2 fans. Jacob and Sophie both are fighting Brain Cancer. Things looked up in the family as a couple years ago the two went into remission but about a year and a half ago the family was informed that the cancer was back. Since then their lives have been spent in hospitals and has looked pretty sad. But this one conversation with hockey player changed everything.

After the conversation Jacob posted a video saying how thankful he was for this moment. The video made it’s way back to Dzingel and he reached out and asked to meet up and hang out with the family. Dzingel then brought them all to a Sens game and helped them enjoy themselves. He took them to meet the team and into the locker room and just made all their dreams comes true.

The great thing about this is it didn’t end there. After all of this that brought the family to tears. Dzingel gave the boy his cell phone number and told him to text him anytime or call him to hang and he would come. That he wasn’t just gonna be a guy who offered an experience but a guy who offered to be apart of Jacob and Sophie’s life.

Below I’ll post the video of this where you will get to see it with your own eyes. Warning TEAR JERKER!

But Dzingel deserves to be praised for this because his actions were not of donated money and leave but to make himself available to a family who was feeling worn and lacking any joy in their lives.

These are your news and notes for Tuesday, October 9th, 2018…

In the NHL, there were four contests yesterday.

    • The Boston Bruins played host to the Ottawa Senators and went on to victory in a 6-3 rout at TD Garden. Patrice Bergeron went on to net a hat trick, the fourth in his career, and David Pastrnak collected four points (two goals and two assists) in the contest.

Bergeron also became the fifth player in franchise history to net a hat trick in a Bruins home opener and the first since Cam Neely in the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons. Bergeron only needs to net seven more goals from becoming the sixth player in franchise history to register 300 career goals.

Bergeron also registered the third fastest goal in team history for a home opener, scoring just 30 seconds into the game.

    • Robin Lehner and the New York Islanders went on to defeat the San Jose Sharks 4-0. Lehner would stop all 35 shots that he faced in the contest to lift the Islanders to their first home win of the season. Lehner would also become the first goaltender in franchise history to record a shutout in a team debut.
    • Jack Eichel and the Buffalo Sabres went on to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2. Eichel would register two goals in the contest and Sabres goalie Carter Hutton would record 35 saves. The Sabres, however, would be outshot 37-17 in a limited-mistake free contest. Eichel would register four shots on six shot attempts in this contest.
    • The Anaheim Ducks held their 25th home opener and went on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout at Honda Center. This game also marked 25 years to the day when they also opened up their first season against the Detroit Red Wings.

With the defeat over the Red Wings, Anaheim is 3-0-0 thus far in the 2018-19 season and match their best start over three games in team history. The last time the Ducks won three straight to open a season, it ended with a Stanley Cup victory in 2007.

There were two players on the ice last night who were not born yet when Anaheim began NHL play in 1993-94, 21-year-old Troy Terry and 19-year-old Max Comtois.

This was an exciting home opener for the Ducks who came out to their white Mighty Ducks of Anaheim jerseys for pregame warmups.

The Ducks would later sport their new third jersey during game play.

  • 2018-19 Ottawa Senators Preview

    OTT

Last Season: 28-43-11 67 pts (7th in Atlantic Division; Did Not Make Playoffs)
Key Additions: D Dylan DeMelo, F Paul Carey, F Mikkel Boedker, and F Chris Tierney

Key Departures: D Fredrik Claesson, D Erik Karlsson, F Mike Hoffman, and F Alexandre Burrows

    Top Questions Facing the Senators:

    1. Where do the Ottawa Senators go now?

With all of the distractions going on in Ottawa right now which resulted in both Mike Hoffman (off ice issues with his girlfriend harassing Erik Karlsson’s wife) and Karlsson (in the last year of his contract with no signs of resigning) to be traded, and Craig Anderson requesting to be traded, this franchise is in disarray. How this teams band together will be the key to how the build towards the future.

    2. Will Brady Tkachuk crack the lineup?

Tkachuk, 4th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, is determined to make the Senators 2018-19 roster, and has left Boston University to chase his goal. However, being with all of the drama going on in Ottawa, maybe Tkachuk and his youthful enthusiasm is something this team needs right now.
