When we were doing our previews for the NWHL teams, we asked how well the Whitecaps would transition into the league. Just a quick reminder, the Whitecaps were already an established franchise, and that this was their first season in the NWHL. It’s pretty fair to say, after six games, that they are one of the best teams in the league and are playing like legit Isobel Cup title contenders.
They are currently in first place, having won all six games that they have played. They have put up the most goals for with 23 and have only allowed nine goals against, for a goal differential of +14. Breaking down their scoring by period, they have scored seven goals in the first period, six goals in the second period, and 10 goals in the third period. So they are getting pretty balanced scoring throughout the game.
Already this season eleven players have found the back of the net for the Whitecaps. Leading the team in scoring is actually a tie with Jonna Curtis and Katie McGovern, both having scored four times. Another 14 players have also found the score sheet, with Lee Stecklein leading the team with six assists. However, it is Jonna Curtis leading the team in points, with nine.
Complimented with their good play, their goaltending has been nothing short of phenomenal. It is Amanda Leveille leading the way having won all six games that she’s played. She has also put up some stellar numbers in all six games, she currently has a 1.50 GAA, a .947 Save Percentage, and she has also posted one shutout. She has truly picked up where she left off having already been named NWHL Goaltender of the Year for 2018.
Currently the Whitecaps have a nice long break, as their next game will be on Saturday December 1st against the Boston Pride in Minnesota.
You can watch TXHT Live tomorrow at 8p EST on both Twitch and Facebook Live.
In the lone NWHL contest yesterday, the Minnesota Whitecaps defeated the Buffalo Beauts 2-1 and moved the Whitecaps to a 6-0-0 record on the season. Minnesota’s Amy Menke scored the game winner in the third period.
Minnesota entered the weekend undefeated with Buffalo and the Boston Pride, but with the two wins over the Beauts and Boston’s loss to the Metropolitan Riveters on Saturday, Minnesota remains the lone undefeated team in the NWHL.
Minnesota would score the first goal of the game just 19 seconds into the contest with Kate Schipper scoring. This was Schipper’s second goal of the weekend.
Buffalo would be awarded a penalty shot when the puck was covered in the crease with Dani Cameranesi scoring into the top left corner to tie the game at 1.

These are your news and notes for Monday, October 22nd, 2018:
In the NHL yesterday there were three contests…

Tampa Bay is 5-1-1 on the season thus far and is 6-0-1 in the last seven contests against Chicago.Tampa Bay recorded 33 shots on goal during the second period, the highest total in a period since the 1997-98 season.
Brayden Point had his first game-winner of the season and the 15th of his career in 157 games played. There are only three other players who have more since debuting in the NHL in the 2016-17 season.
Brayden Point of the @TBLightning scored his first game-winning goal of the season and the 15th of his NHL career.
Johnny Gaudreau registered his 300th NHL point in his 320th game last night as the Calgary Flames went on to rout the New York Rangers 4-1.Gaudreau would score twice to reach the milestone and helped lead the Flames to a record of 5-3-0 on the season. Calgary won at Madison Square Garden for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Gaudreau, a fourth round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, became the fourth player from that draft class to reach this milestone as well. He also became the sixth player to reach 300 career points.
The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-2, after a pre-game ceremony for the retirement of Paul Kariya’s number at Honda Center. There is more on Paul Kariya’s number retirement in the NHL news section.
Yesterday’s results:
Tampa Bay 6, CHICAGO 3
Calgary 4, NY RANGERS 1
Buffalo 4, ANAHEIM 2
In the NWHL yesterday…
The Minnesota Whitecaps went on to defeat the Metropolitan Riveters 6-2. This would also mark a season-sweep of the Riveters in the second half of games in New Jersey.
Whitecaps G Amanda Leveille registered 26 shots and continued to dominate the Riveters all game. Leveille is 4-0-0 against Metropolitan this season and 9-4-0 in 13 matchups all time against the Riveters.
The Whitecaps trio of Allie Thunstrom, Katie McGovern, and Joanna Curtis all made the scoresheet.
The only possible time that the Riveters will face the Whitecaps again is if there is a potential playoff matchup.
Minnesota would jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Riveters would notch their first goal of the game with less than 2:30 left in the second period, as the Whitecaps were dominating the Riveters throughout the first 30 minutes of the game. The Whitecaps would also find a recipe of success in this contest by shooting and scoring.
Four different scores for the Whitecaps would define the dominance in this contest.
The Riveters look to bounce back from back-to-back losses on Saturday when the Riveters visit the Boston Pride at Warrior Ice Arena.
For Minnesota, they look to extend their 4-0-0 start when they have a back-to-back slate of games next weekend when they face off against the Buffalo Beauts at TRIA Rink.

Analysis:
This game started off slow and a little sloppy for both teams as they went through a feeling out process, but as the game progressed both teams settled in and started generating good scoring chances for each other.
Need to Do:
Riveters – The Riveters need to do a better job of setting up in the Whitecaps zone, and creating some better scoring opportunities. Also the Riveters need to make some better and cleaner passes.
Whitecaps – The Whitecaps did a great job of getting passes to their points to get shots on goal and will need to continue to do that.
This was a much better period for both teams. The passing was much crisper and some of the better scoring opportunities were generated for both teams. The Riveters were also much more efficient with their overall game, but the Whitecaps were the much better zone team.
Need to Do:
Riveters – The Riveters played a much better 2nd period and responded well when the went down 2-1, but they need to do much better in the faceoff circle. Faceoff wins will help with possession.
Whitecaps – The Whitecaps also had a much better period, and were able to take the momentum back with the late goal for the 3-2 lead. The Whitecaps need to keep pushing the pressure in the Riveters zone.
Whitecaps – 9:32 – Hannah Brandt (3) from Lee Stecklein
Whitecaps Penalty – 10:38 – Allie Thunstrom 2 mins for Hooking

Analysis:
This was a fun game to watch. The first perood was a little sloppy for both teams, but with the 2nd period, the game tightened up and both teams started to play much better. The Whitecaps were clearly the better in the faceoff circle, but the Riveters took the shot advatage. Both teams responded well when the other scored, but it would be the Whitecaps getting the empty netter to clinch this one.

The Boston Bruins played host to the Ottawa Senators and went on to victory in a 6-3 rout at TD Garden. Patrice Bergeron went on to net a hat trick, the fourth in his career, and David Pastrnak collected four points (two goals and two assists) in the contest.
Bergeron also became the fifth player in franchise history to net a hat trick in a Bruins home opener and the first since Cam Neely in the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons. Bergeron only needs to net seven more goals from becoming the sixth player in franchise history to register 300 career goals.
Bergeron also registered the third fastest goal in team history for a home opener, scoring just 30 seconds into the game.
Robin Lehner and the New York Islanders went on to defeat the San Jose Sharks 4-0. Lehner would stop all 35 shots that he faced in the contest to lift the Islanders to their first home win of the season. Eichel would register two goals in the contest and Sabres goalie Carter Hutton would record 35 saves. The Sabres, however, would be outshot 37-17 in a limited-mistake free contest. The Anaheim Ducks held their 25th home opener and went on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout at Honda Center. This game also marked 25 years to the day when they also opened up their first season against the Detroit Red Wings.
With the defeat over the Red Wings, Anaheim is 3-0-0 thus far in the 2018-19 season and match their best start over three games in team history. The last time the Ducks won three straight to open a season, it ended with a Stanley Cup victory in 2007.
There were two players on the ice last night who were not born yet when Anaheim began NHL play in 1993-94, 21-year-old Troy Terry and 19-year-old Max Comtois.
This was an exciting home opener for the Ducks who came out to their white Mighty Ducks of Anaheim jerseys for pregame warmups.
The Ducks would later sport their new third jersey during game play.
