    Recaps:

    -In the contest between the Florida Panthers and the Winnipeg Jets in the first NHL Global Series games in Finland, the Jets would defeat the Panthers 4-2.

    Jets F Patrik Laine recorded the first NHL career hat-trick in a regular-season contest outside of North America to outduel fellow countryman, Aleksander Barkov.

    Entering this contest, Laine only had three goals in 12 games. Laine scored two game-tying goals before he finished off the hat trick, the fifth of his NHL career.

    -The Montreal Canadiens would score a record of two goals in two seconds to defeat the Washington Capitals 6-4.

    Montreal Canadiens rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi would score his first two NHL career goals.

    Kotkaniemi would become the youngest player in League history born outside of North America at 18 years and 118 days to score at least two goals in a game since Patrik Laine accomplished the same feat at 18 years and 183 days.

    • The Tampa Bay Lightning and Yanni Gourde have agreed to a six-year contract with an AAV of $5.166 million.
    • NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced tentative plans to have NHL Global Series games in four countries next season.

    The Connecticut Whale and Taylor Marchin have agreed to a contract after a strong showing during Marchin’s PTO.

    These are your news and notes for Monday, October 22nd, 2018:

     

    In the NHL yesterday there were three contests…

    • First, the Tampa Bay Lightning registered a franchise-record 55 shots on goal to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3. Tampa Bay is 5-1-1 on the season thus far and is 6-0-1 in the last seven contests against Chicago.Tampa Bay recorded 33 shots on goal during the second period, the highest total in a period since the 1997-98 season.

      Brayden Point had his first game-winner of the season and the 15th of his career in 157 games played. There are only three other players who have more since debuting in the NHL in the 2016-17 season.

    • Johnny Gaudreau registered his 300th NHL point in his 320th game last night as the Calgary Flames went on to rout the New York Rangers 4-1.Gaudreau would score twice to reach the milestone and helped lead the Flames to a record of 5-3-0 on the season. Calgary won at Madison Square Garden for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

      Gaudreau, a fourth round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, became the fourth player from that draft class to reach this milestone as well. He also became the sixth player to reach 300 career points.

    • The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-2, after a pre-game ceremony for the retirement of Paul Kariya’s number at Honda Center. There is more on Paul Kariya’s number retirement in the NHL news section.

    In the NWHL yesterday…

    The Minnesota Whitecaps went on to defeat the Metropolitan Riveters 6-2. This would also mark a season-sweep of the Riveters in the second half of games in New Jersey.

    Whitecaps G Amanda Leveille registered 26 shots and continued to dominate the Riveters all game. Leveille is 4-0-0 against Metropolitan this season and 9-4-0 in 13 matchups all time against the Riveters.

    The Whitecaps trio of Allie Thunstrom, Katie McGovern, and Joanna Curtis all made the scoresheet.

    The only possible time that the Riveters will face the Whitecaps again is if there is a potential playoff matchup.

    Minnesota would jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Riveters would notch their first goal of the game with less than 2:30 left in the second period, as the Whitecaps were dominating the Riveters throughout the first 30 minutes of the game. The Whitecaps would also find a recipe of success in this contest by shooting and scoring.

    Four different scores for the Whitecaps would define the dominance in this contest.

    The Riveters look to bounce back from back-to-back losses on Saturday when the Riveters visit the Boston Pride at Warrior Ice Arena.

    For Minnesota, they look to extend their 4-0-0 start when they have a back-to-back slate of games next weekend when they face off against the Buffalo Beauts at TRIA Rink.

  • Whale Score But Fall To The Pride

    Whale Score But Fall To The Pride

     

    Connecticut Whale played the Boston Pride yesterday at the Warrior Ice Arena in Boston. I got to listen to the third period while Michael and I were on our way home from covering the Riveters home opener against the Whitecaps in the Prudential Center. The Whale played better in this game than their two previous games, but ultimately had the same result. However, there are some positives to be taking from this game; for starters, they scored. The third game in the season and they were able to put the biscuit in the basket. Second, their puck movement in the offensive zone was good; they have always been really good at this. Thirdly, their neutral zone play and some aspects of their defensive zone play were fantastic, as they did a really good job mucking it up, making it difficult for the Pride.

     

    3 Notable Players for the Whale

    Meeri Räisänen: I wonder if I’ll need to keep count of how many times I will put her on this list. She again played spectacularly for the Whale, unfortunately in a losing effort, but she was good today for 28 saves.

    Emily Fluke: The captain of the Whale was once again, leading by example. In front of many family and friends, I’m sure, she got the Whale’s second goal of the game making sure that the game was tied heading into the third.

    Katerina Mrázová: After celebrating her birthday on the 19th, she played splendidly. She ended up getting the Whale their first goal of the year, and added an assist on Emily Fluke’s tying goal in the second. She also followed that up with a significant offensive chance while on the penalty kill.

    Quote of the Day

    While Michael was conducting interviews with the Riveter players, I heard Madison Packer say this, “It’s not how you start, its how you finish.” She is absolutely right in this regard. It is still very early in the season, and there are positives to take away from the game. Things will get better for the Whale as the season goes on, I truly believe that. The Whale have some time off before their next game which is on Sunday November 18th against the Metropolitan Riveters in the Barnabas Health Hockey House at 2p.

    These are your news and notes for Sunday, October 21st, 2018

     

    There were 13 contests in the NHL yesterday…

    • In the Vegas Golden Knights 90th regular-season game, Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury registered 17 saves to give Vegas their third consecutive win. Fleury also won his 408th game to surpass Glenn Hall for 10th place all-time.

      Vegas defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-1.

    • Colorado’s trio of Nathan MacKinnon (3 pts), Gabriel Landeskog (2 pts) and Mikko Rantanen (1 pt) found the score sheet to continue their starts to the season. Colorado improved to 5-1-2 in 2018-19 and has a record of 3-0-2 in their last five contests.MacKinnon and Ratanen are the 21st set of teammates in League history to begin a simultaneous set of point streaks of at least eight games.

      MacKinnon also became the seventh player to have eight goals in the first eight games in franchise history.

    • Carolina Hurricanes Sebastian Aho registered an assist on a Carolina goal with 2:33 left in regulation to extend his point-scoring streak to eight games and only Ron Francis has a point-streak longer than this. Francis started a streak in 11 games during the 1984-85 season.
    • The Toronto Maple Leafs took on the St. Louis Blues and TXHT’s Steve Gardiner has your recap of that contest here.

    There were two NWHL contests yesterday.

    First, the Metropolitan Riveters took on the Minnesota Whitecaps at Prudential Center. Minnesota would defeat the Riveters 5-3.

    Before the contest, the Riveters raised their 2017-18 Isobel Cup Championship banner.

    Once the game started a goaltending duel was renewed between Amanda Leveille and Katie Fitzgerald. Leville finished the contest with 24 saves and Fitzgerald registered 17 saves. Minnesota is now 3-0-0 on the season where Metropolitan is 0-4-0.

    Minnesota opened up the scoring late in the first period with Chelsey Brodt Rosenthal at 18:13. Madison Packer would score about a minute later in the contest.

    The Whitecaps took the lead again in the second period when Amy Menke registered her first NWHL goal at 12:31 and Packer would score again 5:15 later. Toward the end of the second, Meghan Pezon scored to give Minnesota a 3-2 lead that would be carried into the third period.

    2:33 into the third, Audra Richards would score her first NWHL goal to tie the game 3-3. About seven minutes later, Minnesota’s Amanda Boulier would score to give the Whitecaps their fourth one-goal lead of the game.

    In the final period, the Riveters would outshoot the Whitecaps 15-4 but Leveille was able to hold off further scoring from Metropolitan.

    • The other contest in the NWHL pitted the Boston Pride against the Connecticut Whale. Boston defeated Connecticut 4-2. Boston improved to 2-0-0 on the young season. Connecticut fell to 0-3-0.Boston jumped to an early 2-0 lead but then Connecticut stormed back to tit the game at 2-2. Boston’s McKenna Brand netted the game-winner and Gigi Marvin scored the empty-netter to seal the win for Boston.

      Connecticut’s Katerina Mrázová had a hand in both of the Whale’s goals, finishing with one goal and one assist.

      Meeri Räisänen was solid in goal again netting 28 saves for Connecticut.

      For the Pride, Emily Field scored her second goal of the game just 35 seconds into this contest. Defender Lauren Kelly scored the second goal of the contest for the Pride on a power-play goal five minutes into the second period.

      Pride G Katie Burt registered 13 saves on 15 shots on goal in the contest.

    Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, there are your news and notes for Sunday, October 14th, 2018.

     

    There were 14 games on the NHL schedule and then there were 2 games on the NWHL Schedule.

    First in NHL action…

    • Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs went on to defeat the Washington Capitals 4-2 at Capital One Arena. In the contest, Auston Matthews went on to extend his consecutive point game streak to 16 contests with 28 points. Matthews also became the sixth player to register multiple points in the first six games of the season.TXHT has your game recaps of Toronto versus Washington here.
    • In his fifth game of NHL action, Rasmus Dahlin registered his first NHL goal and became the youngest defenceman to register a goal. With his goal, Dahlin joined Phil Housley as one of 11 defenceman to register a game winning goal before their 19th birthday.
    • Connor McDavid collected two points on Saturday to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers. McDavid has factored in all of Edmonton’s five goals on the season thus far. There are only four other players that have factored on more than five goals to start off a season.
    • Justin Williams registered the game-tying goal and assisted on the game-winner in overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes over the Minnesota Wild. This would be Williams second game where he registered three points for the season. Carolina would also register 57 shots on goal, the third-highest in franchise history. The record is 65 shots, which occured on March 15, 1984.
    • The Montreal Canadiens went on to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins for their first home win of the season.

    In NWHL action yesterday…

    • The Boston Pride went on to defeat the Metropolitan Riveters 5-1 last night. The defending Isobel Cup champions struck first but the Pride went on to score five unanswered goals. Amanda Kessel scored the lone goal for the Riveters. Boston’s McKenna Brand registered her first professional goal just a minute into the second period. Both teams traded penalties but neither team would take advantage the power-play chances.During the third period, Boston would explode with four goals. Dana Trivigno netted the game winner off of a pass from Hayley Skarupa. The duo would team up again but this time Trivigno set up a Skarupa goal to give Boston the 3-1 lead.

      Pride D Lexi Bender assisted on the team’s final two goals with Jillian Dempsey and Emily Field scoring the fourth and fifth goals, respectively.

      Boston G Katie Burt registered 17 saves in the contest and Riveters G Katie Fitzgerald registered 33 saves off of 38 shots.

      Boston will return to Warrior Ice Arena hosting the Connecticut Whale on October 20th. The Metropolitan Riveters will look to get a win when they face off against the Minnesota Whitecaps at Prudential Center on October 20th.

    Boston Pride wins in season opener

    • The Buffalo Beauts would shut out the Connecticut Whale, winning 7-0 at HarborCenter yesterday afternoon. This would be the first time that the Beauts have recorded consecutive shutouts in team history.Beauts rookie D Savannah Harmon opened up the scoring in the contest with a goal 9:06 off of a pass from Dani Cameranesi. This would be Harmon’s first goal of her career. Annika Zalewski would score her first professional goal 42 seconds later.

      The second period would be very quiet between the two teams until midway through the frame when Buffalo F Maddie Elia would jam the puck between Merri Räisänen’s pads that would trickle over the goal line.

      When the second period would come to a close, Buffalo had registered 24 shots and the Whale would register 13 shots.

      Buffalo would open up the scoring more in the third period with Zalewski, Hayley Scamurra, rookie Julianna Iafoll, and Corinne Buie all scoring goals.

      With this win, Beauts G Shannon Szabados recorded her first NWHL shutout as well as her first NWHL win.

      Buffalo will next play a set of games against the Minnesota Whitecaps on October 27th and 28th. The Whale looks to get their first win of the season next Saturday night, October 20th, when they take on the Boston Pride.

    • Duncan Keith played in his 1,000th NHL game yesterday.
    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced the Florida’s Mike Matheison will have a hearing for his interference/unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson tomorrow.

     

    In the NWHL…

    • Metropolitan Riveters F Madison Parker was released from a Boston area hospital and that she did not suffer a serious injury from yesterday’s game. Updates on her status will continue to be updated, per the NWHL.

  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: October 8th, 2018

     

    These are your News and Notes for Monday, October 8th, 2018:

     

    In the NHL there were three games that happened yesterday…

    • The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Rangers 8-5 at PNC Arena. Carolina overcame four different deficits before Andrei Svechnikov registered his first goal, a game-winner, with 9:16 remaining in the third period. This was the first time the Hurricanes scored eight goal in a contest since March 13, 2017 when they defeated the New York Islanders 8-4. Carolina has registered a point in all three contests this season to extend their record to 2-0-1.Svechnikov (18 years, 195 days) became the first player born in the 2000s to score a NHL goal. He also joined the Hurricanes/Whalers history book as the third youngest player in franchise history to score their first goal. Only Jeff Skinner (18 years, 157 days) and Paul Lawless (18 years, 181 days) are the other two players.

      Yesterday’s contest also marked the first time in the history of the franchise to overcome the four different deficits and go to win the contest in any fashion. The only time this occurred last season was when the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 in overtime.

    • John Tavares continues to shine for the Toronto Maple Leafs as Tavares registered his first hat trick with the Maple Leafs en route to a 7-6 win in overtime over the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center. This was also Tavares’ ninth NHL career hat trick. Toronto registered three goals in the final two minutes of the contest to extend the game into the overtime frame. Morgan Reilly would score the game winner for Toronto just 19 seconds into the overtime frame.Tavares’ made Maple Leafs record book as the fourth player in the NHL modern era (since the 1943-33 season) to register a hat trick in his first three games. he Joins Miroslav Frycer, Jeff O’Neill, and current Maple Leaf teammate Auston Matthews.

      Matthews would go on to match a career-high four points in the contest (two goals and two assists), a mark he set in four-goal NHL debut on October 12, 2016.

      In a tribute ceremony before yesterday’s game, there was an emotional tribute for Chicago Blackhawks legend Stan Mikita. Mikita’s wife, Jill, was on hand for the ceremonial puckdrop.

    • The Los Angeles Kings went on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 at Staples Center. Ilya Kovalchuk would register two assists, including on the game-winner, to reach the 400-assist milestone. This would also mark the first win on the season for the Kings.Kovalchuk returned to the NHL when he signed with Los Angeles on June 23. Kovalchuk, 35, is one of eight active players in the NHL who have played a minimum of 100 contests and then average at least one point per game.

    In NHL news…

      • The Three Stars of the Week were announced earlier today.The Third Star of the Week went to Dallas Stars goalie Ben Bishop. Bishop recorded 62 saves on 63 shot attempts (a .984 save percentage), compiling a 2-0-0 record with a 0.50 GAA. Bishop would also register one shutout, a 3-0 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on October 4. In that contest Bishop stopped all 30 shots and became the third goaltender in franchise history to earn a shutout in a season opener.

        The Second Star of the Week went to Chicago Blackhawks C Jonathan Toews. Toews currently shares the League lead in goals with five and ranks second in points with six. Chicago has earned five points out of a possible six in the season standings (2-0-1) to open up the season. Toews registered his fifth career hat trick back on October 6. When Toews accomplished that feat, he became the fifth player in Blackhawks history to complete the hat trick with an overtime goal since December 2, 2006 when Jeff Hamilton reached that milestone.

        The First Star of the Week went to Toronto Maple Leafs C Auston Matthews. Matthews currently leads the League in goals (five), tied with Jonathan Toews and leads the league in points (eight). Toronto is currently 2-1-0 (4 pts) on the season. Matthews registered his second career four-point game in Toronto’s 7-6 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday and became the seventh player in franchise history to register multiple points in the team’s first three games of the season.

      • The Philadelphia Flyers announced that James van Riemsdyk will be out five to six weeks with a lower-body injury.
      • Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo will be out of action for 2-4 weeks with an MCL sprain, the team announced today
      • Columbus Blue Jackets C Brandon Dubinsky is also headed for Injured Reserve, the team announced today. Dubinsky has a strained oblique muscle that was suffered in a practice on Sunday.

     

    In NWHL news, there were two contests to happen in the NWHL yesterday:

      • First, the Buffalo Beauts went on to defeat the Connecticut Whale 4-0 at Terry Connors Ice Rink in Stamford, CT. This game featured the debut of two goaltenders, Nicole Hensley and Meeri Räisänen. Räisänen stopped 34 of the 38 shots she faced in the contest for the Whale and Nicole Hensley made 10 saves on 10 shots on goal for the Beauts.Maddie Elia would score the first two goals of the contest for the Beauts in the span of 2:31, assisted by her linemates.

        Hayley Scamurra, the 2018 NWHL Rookie of the Year, would register four points in the contest with two goals and two assists.

        Buffalo had the 2-0 advantage going into the first intermission, along with outscoring Connecticut 16-4.

      • The other contest pitted the Minnesota Whitecaps versus the Metropolitan Riveters at TRIA Rink. The Whitecaps would complete a weekend sweep of the defending Isobel Cup champions with a 3-1 win.The Whitecaps, much like Saturday’s contest, used their speed to get past the Riveters. Amanda Boulier would open up the scoring for Minnesota at 10:25 in the first period. Jenny Ryan would tie the score for the Riveters, the team’s first on the young season.

        Whitecaps Kendall Coyne Schofield had the opportunity to score on a shorthanded breakaway but would be denied by Riveters goaltender, Katie Fitzgerald. Amanda Kessel would have her own breakaway moments later for the Riveters on her way out of the penalty box, but her shot was too high.

        Jonna Curtis would give the Whitecaps the lead at 2-1 8:24 in the second period. Hannah Brandt would make it a 3-1 lead for the Whitecaps when she buried her shot off of Olympic teammate Coyne Schofield.

      • Coming up this week in NWHL action:On Saturday October 13th, the Connecticut Whale visit the Buffalo Beauts at HarborCenter at 1:30 p.m., EDT and at 7:30 p.m., EDT, the Metropolitan Riveters visit the Boston Pride at Warrior Ice Arena.
      • Your NWHL Player of the Week is Hannah Brandt of the Minnesota Whitecaps. Brandt scored a goal in each of the Whitecaps games over the weekend over the Metropolitan Riveters. Brandt gave the Whitecaps the 2-0 advantage with her goal early in the second period on Saturday and then she would score again on Sunday to give the Whitecaps a 3-1 on Sunday, as well as the weekend sweep for the NWHL’s newest team.When Brandt was informed that she was named Player of the Week, she was appreciative but felt that the spotlight and award should be shared with her coaches, staff, players, and the fans.

    NWHL Notes – Whale Fall To The Beauts

    The Connecticut Whale fell to the Buffalo Beauts in their home opener today at Terry Conners Rink. The final score of the game was 4-0.

    3 Notable Players For The Whale

    Meeri Räisänen: The obvious choice. She made her Whale debut after signing with the team earlier in the week. She may not have been the winning goaltender today but she made some incredible stops on her way to a 34 save performance. It earned her the third star of the game.

    Emily Fluke: The Captain of the Whale looked really solid in the game. There was almost never a time where she wasn’t on the ice. Killing penalties, blocking shots, being on the powerplay; and, had the best chance of the game for the Whale. She was everywhere on the ice.

    Michelle Löwenhielm: The Swede looked good in her first game in the NWHL. She had some really good neutral zone play, and made some really good plays in the defensive zone along with Shannon Doyle. Looking forward to seeing her continued development to the NWHL game.

    Player Who Needs To Step Up Next Game

    Cydney Roesler: Let me make one thing clear, she doesn’t need me telling her this. She is the Assistant Coach of the Whale; she’ll probably be the first to tell you that she didn’t have a good game. A hat trick of penalties will do that for any player. She knows that she needs to be better and I have no doubt she will be better next game.

    Fun Fact

    This was my second attended game for the Whale. Unfortunately the Whale are 0-2 with 0 Goals For and 9 Goals Against, and I’m starting to wonder, being the superstitious person that I am, if I am the problem. Hopefully not, as I will be attending the game against the Riveters in Pittsburgh on December 2nd.

    There were twelve contests last night in the NHL.

    • The Chicago Blackhawks became third team in NHL history to start the season with consecutive overtime victories. The Blackhawks follow the 1984-85 Toronto Maple Leafs and 2009-10 Montreal Canadiens. Jonathan Toews completed a hat trick to secure a Chicago 5-4 win over the St. Louis Blues in overtime at Enterprise Center. Toews’ hat trick was also the fifth of his career.
      • The New Jersey Devils defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 in the NHL Global Series at Gothenberg, Sweden. This was New Jersey’s first neutral site victory since March 27, 1994 when they defeated the Quebec Nordiques at Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. New Jersey’s Kyle Palmieri became the third player to score the fastest goal in an NHL game outside of North America.
      • Martin Brodeur was on hand for the ceremonial puck drop that included New Jersey’s Marcus Johansson and Edmonton’s Adam Larsson, both of whom were born in Sweden.
      • St. Louis Blues Alexander Steen appeared in his 900th NHL game. His father, Thomas Steen, played in 950 NHL games. The Steens joined only two other father/son duos for more than 900 NHL games played.

      • The San Jose Sharks have placed Joe Thornton on Injured Reserve.

    In NWHL news…

      • The Minnesota Whitecaps defeated the Metropolitan Riveters 4-0 at a sold-out TRIA Rink in St. Paul, Minnesota yesterday. Amanda Leveille, former University of Minnesota and Buffalo Beauts goalie, recorded the shutout for the Whitecaps. Katie McGovern would register the first goal for the Minnesota Whitecaps. McGovern’s goal, which was the first in team NWHL history, was registered with 2:24 left in the first period.Hannah Brandt would score the Whitecaps second goal of the contest. Riveters Amanda Kessel attempted to get the team on the board, however Leveille deflected Kessel’s shot midway through the second period. Kessel would later ring a shot off of the crossbar.

        Kate Schipper would make the contest a 3-0 lead for the Whitecaps 3:34 into the third period from a high shot pass from Kendall Coyne Schofield. Coyne Schofield would score the empty-net goal in the final seconds of the contest.

        The Minnesota Whitecaps take on the Metropolitan Riveters again today at TRIA Rink.

  • Whale sign goalie Meeri Räisänen

    The Connecticut Whale went out and signed Finnish goalie Meeri Räisänen. This is a late signing in the off-season; merely days before the regular season is supposed to start. The Whale used it to solidify their goaltending. Räisänen, is a two time SM-sarja Champion and is a three time winner of the Tuula Puputti Award, which is the Finnish award for best goaltender. She is also a bronze medalist in the Women’s World Championships and a bronze medalist in the Olympics.

    She will be competing for the starting goalie position in the Whale against Russian National Team goaltender Maria Sorokina and Annapolis, MD native Sam Walther.

  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: October 1, 2018

     

    Here are your news and notes covering the NHL for Monday, October 1, 2018.

     

    There were four preseason contests that happened yesterday.

      • The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the San Jose Sharks with a 5-3 win at T-Mobile Arena. Tomas Nosek would score two of the Golden Knights three shorthanded goals. Max Pacioretty would also score the other shorthanded goal. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury registered 33 saves to give Golden Knights six wins out of seven on the preseason campaign. Erik Karlsson scored his first goal for the Sharks, which were 2-for-6 on the power-play. Sharks goalie Martin Jones recorded 27 saves in the contest.
      • The Nashville Predators defeated the Carolina Hurricanes with a 5-4 in overtime at PNC Arena. Nashville’s Ryan Johansen scored the GWG 21 seconds into the overtime frame, his second of the game. Hurricanes goalie Scott Darling recorded 20 saves before leaving the game in the second period with a lower-body injury. Petr Mrazek came in for relief for Carolina and recorded 10 saves. Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros registered 14 and 16 shots respectively for Nashville.
      • The Washington Capitals defeated the St. Louis Blues with a 5-2 victory at Capital One Arena. Washington Capitals forwards Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie scored goals 49 seconds apart early in the third period. Ovechkin scored his fourth goal of the preseason 38 seconds into the third period to give Washington a 2-1 lead and then Oshie scored at 1:27. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby recorded 21 saves. Tom Wilson was given a match penalty for his hit on Blues F Oskar Sundqvist at 5:22 in the second period. There is more to come on that later.
      • The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Dallas Stars in a 6-5 victory at American Airlines Center. Colorado’s Nathan Landeskog had two goals and assist in this contest. Mikko Rantanen registered one goal and two assists, Tyson Jost and Matt Calvert each had two assists, and Colorado goalie Seymon Varlamov recorded 32 saves.

    • Scott Hartnell announced his retirement today from the NHL. Hartnell played 17 seasons and registered 707 points in 1,249 games with three teams.

     

     

    • Shea Weber was announced as the 30th captain in Montreal Canadiens team history today. Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher were also announced as the alternate captains.

     

     

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs finalized their 23-man roster (13 forwards, eight defenceman and two goalies) today.

     

     

    • 19 years ago today, the Edmonton Oilers officially retired Wayne Gretzky’s number.

     

     

    • The New York Islanders unveiled their new third jerseys today. These thirds are identical to the last few third jerseys they have had over the past few seasons.

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Connor Carrick to the Dallas Stars for a conditional seventh-round draft pick which will turn into sixth rounder if Carrick plays at least 50 games.

     

     

    • Radim Vrbata announced his retirement today from the NHL.

     

     

    • The Montreal Canadiens acquired Brett Kulak from the Calgary Flames, who will report to the Laval Rocket of the AHL. In return, the Calgary Flames, will get Matt Taormina and Rinat Valiev.

     

     

    In the NWHL, the Connecticut Whale announced that they have signed Meeri Räisänen. Räisänen, a Finnish goalie, joins Russian national team goalie Maria Sorokina to give the Whale a strong and talented goaltending tandem.
