    Capitals Acquire Nick Jensen from the Red Wings

    The Washington Capitals continue to tinker with thier lineup as they have traded defenseman Madison Bowey and a 2020 2nd Round Pick to the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman Nick Jensen and Buffalo’s 2019 5th Round Pick.

     

    Jensen, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, has played in 60 games this season for the Red Wings scoring two goals and 13 assists for 15 points.

     

    Jensen will add depth to the Capitals blue line and will solid and reliable seventh defenseman for the team.

    PITTSBURGH 6, NY Rangers 5

    The Pittsburgh Penguins would squeak away from the New York Rangers with a 6-5 win, thanks to two goals from Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin.

    New York’s Mats Zuccarello would score two goals of his own in the contest as well.

     

     

     

    St. Louis 4, MINNESOTA 0

    The St. Louis Blues would net their 10th consecutive win and their third straight shutout with a 4-0 win over the Minnesota Wild yesterday afternoon.

     

    NEW JERSEY 4, Buffalo 1

    New Jersey’s Kyle Palmieri would have two assists and a goal in this contest to help the Devils down the Buffalo Sabres 4-1.

    Philadelphia 3, DETROIT 1

    The Philadelphia Flyers would end the home-and-home series with a set of back-to-back wins over the Detroit Red Wings with a 3-1 win last night.

     

    Philadelphia’s Oskar Lindbolm would have a two goal game in this contest for the Flyers.

     

     

    FLORIDA 6, Montreal 3

    Florida Panthers Aleksander Barkov would have a hat trick in this contest as the Panthers would double up the Montreal Canadiens by the score of 6-3.

    Montreal’s Max Domi would have a two goal effort but it would not be enough as the Canadiens fall to a record of 31-21-7 and are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the two wild card spots in the Eastern Conference standings.

     

    ANAHEIM 5, Washington 2

     

    In this contest, Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin would score his 40th goal on the season but it would not be enough as the Capitals would fall to the Anaheim Ducks 5-2.

     

    On Anaheim’s side, this win would be their fourth win in the last 24 contests.

    Two records were also broken by Ducks players in this contest.  Cam Fowler is now the franchise leader for assists by a defenceman and Ryan Miller is now the the leader for most wins by a U.S.-born goaltender in NHL history.

    In a pre-game ceremony, the Ducks would retire Scott Niedermayer’s number 27.  Niedermayer joins Paul Kariya, whose number was retired by the franchise earlier in the season, and Teemu Selanne.

    Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin would score twice in the contest against the Calgary but it would not be enough as the Pittsburgh Penguins would fall to the Calgary Flames by the score of 5-4.

     

     

    St. Louis 3, COLORADO 0

     

    A hard fought 40 minutes between both teams would be the story in this contest until the St. Louis Blues would score three straight goals in the third period, with two of the first goals coming within nearly 30 seconds of each other.

     

    TAMPA BAY 3, Montreal 0

    The Montreal Canadiens would get shutout by the Tampa Bay Lightning by the score of 3-0 in Tampa, Florida yesterday.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 5, Edmonton 2

     

     

    Ottawa 4, WINNIPEG 3 (OT)

    Despite two goals from Tyler Myles and another by Brandon Tanev, the Winnipeg Jets would fall in overtime to the Ottawa Senators by the score of 4-3.

     

    ARIZONA 2, Toronto 0

    The Toronto Maple Leafs would travel to Glendale, Arizona to take on the Arizona Coyotes and would fall to Arizona by the score of 2-0.

    Both of the goals for the Coyotes would come in the second period of the contest.

     

    CAROLINA 3, Dallas 0

    The Carolina Hurricanes would earn their third consecutive win with the 3-0 win last night over the Dallas Stars.

     

    Columbus 5, CHICAGO 2

    Despite being outshot in the contest, the Columbus Blue Jackets would leave Chicago with a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks last night.



    VEGAS 5, Nashville 1

    The Vegas Golden Knights would snap their losing streak by defeating the Nashville Predators by the score of 5-1.

     

    SAN JOSE 3, Vancouver 2

    The Vancouver Canucks would fall to the San Jose Sharks by the score of 3-2 in San Jose last night, despite outshooting the Sharks with 34 shots on goal to San Jose’s 26.

    Boston 4, LOS ANGELES 2

    Tuukka Rask would net another win, extending his personal point streak to 13 games, amassing a record of 11-0-2 in those 13 games.  Rask would turn aside 23 shots as the Boston Bruins would double up the Los Angeles Kings with a 4-2 win in downtown Los Angeles last night.

    The Philadelphia Flyers took on the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL European Game of the Week and would go on to defeat Edmonton 5-4 in the overtime frame.

     

    Philadelphia’s Nolan Patrick would go on to score the game winner at the 2:01 mark in the overtime frame.

    With this win by the Flyers, they have now won seven games in a row and eight out of their last ten games.

     

    New Jersey 3, MONTREAL 2 (OT)

    The New Jersey Devils would go on to defeat the Montreal Canadiens in overtime thanks to two goals by Nico Hischier, including the game-winner in the overtime frame.

    The Detroit Red Wings with this win over the Ottawa Senators would win back to back games.

     

    The Red Wings would score the only two goals in the contest in the first period with no one scoring any goals in the second or third periods.

    The Vegas Golden Knights would fall to the Florida Panthers, leading to a three game skid.

    With the win by Florida, they now have a record of 21-21-8 on the season, good for 50 points.

    The New York Islanders would go on to double up the Los Angeles Kings with a 4-2 win.  Ryan Pulock would go on to have a three assist night, notching all three assists in the third period.

    With the 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues, the Columbus Blue Jackets would go on to split the season series.

    The Winnipeg Jets throttled the Anaheim Ducks with a 9-3 win, and giving the Jets 70 points thus far on the season.

    Today is Monday, January 21st, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were five contests in NHL action yesterday.

     

    CHICAGO 8, Washington 5

     

    The Chicago Blackhawks would face off against the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals and would come away with an 8-5 win in Chicago.

     

    This contest would fast and furious for the Chicago Blackhawks and would end the first period with a 3-1 lead, thanks to goals from Brandon Saad and Patrick Kane with the third goal credited to Jonathan Toews.  The third goal would be due to Washington Capitals Dmitry Orlov hitting the puck into his own net.

     

    The second period would get very chippy in the first six minutes of gameplay with six penalties being duelled out within 45 seconds.  Washington would try to get shots in but nothing would hit in the second period, aside from Dmitry Orlov’s goal.  Alex DeBrincat would score for Chicago, making the score 4-2 at the end of the second period.

     

    The third period is when Washington would turn on the jets to make a full comeback and came within a goal to make the contest 5-4, but the comeback would not be enough as Chicago would score three more goals.

     

    Jonathan Toews would score three goals in the contest, giving him his second hat trick on the season.

     

    With an assist from Chicago’s Patrick Kane, he now has sole possession of third place in terms of assists all-time in the long and storied history of the Blackhawks franchise.

    Toews would have his third game in which he registered at least five points in a game.

    The Metropolitan Division-leading NY Islanders faced off against the slumping Anaheim Ducks and would go on to win this contest 3-0.  With this win by the Islanders, they have now won their last five contests.

     

    This would also be the second consecutive shutout that the Islanders would have in this contest.

     

    VANCOUVER 3, Detroit 2

    Vancouver Canucks rookie phenom Elias Pettersson would return to action in this game and would record one goal and one assist to help lift the Canucks past the Detroit Red Wings by the score of 3-2.

    Carolina 7, EDMONTON 4

    Edmonton Oilers Leon Drasital would score two goals for his team but that would not be enough as the Oilers would fall to the Carolina Hurricanes by the score of 7-4.

    For Carolina, the scoring would be often.  Nino Niederreiter would have two goals in the contest and Hurricanes phenom Sebastian Aho would find the score sheet three times with three assists in the start of a road trip for Carolina.  Carolina’s Jaccob Slavin would have three assists of his own in this contest.

     

     

    There are only four games in action today in the NHL.  The first game starts at 3 p.m. with the Nashville Predators visiting the Colorado Avalanche.

     

     

     

     

    NWHL

     

    In NWHL action yesterday, the Minnesota Whitecaps would close out the home portion of the regular season schedule with a win over the Connecticut Whale, sweeping the weekend series.

    The Minnesota Whitecaps would go to throttle the Connecticut Whale by the score of 9-0 in front of another sold-out crowd at TRIA Rink.

    Minnesota’s Jonna Curtis would lead all skaters for the Whitecaps with a goal and three assists in the contest and would once again tie all NWHL skaters for most points on the season.  Curtis has 17 points on the season thus far.

    Kendall Coyne Schofield had two goals and an assist in the contest and Katie McGovern would have two goals of her own.

    Allie Thunstrom would also have a tally and a helper while Emma Stauber had two assists.

    Kalli Funk would go on to net her first career NWHL goal.

    Whitecaps goaltender Julie Friend picked up the shutout in her first career start, recording 18 saves.

    For the Whale, star Meeri Räisänen would leave in the second period due to a collision and Laura Brennan would replace her in net.  Brennan would have 11 saves on 18 attempts while Räisänen had 21 saves on 23 attempts before she had to depart the contest.

    Jeff Skinner would join the 30 goal maker in this contest and in doing so would be the fifth different Buffalo Sabres player to get 30 goals in fewer than 45 games played with the franchise.  He would also be the third player to achieve this mark in his first season with the Sabres

     

    Carolina Hurricanes Justin Williams would become the third player in franchise history to be aged 37 years or older to record goal streaks of at least four games.

    The Pittsburgh Penguins would defeat the Anaheim Ducks in Anaheim last night thanks to a hat trick from Penguins Jake Guentzel.  Pittsburgh Tanner Pearson would also score twice in the third period to give the Penguins the 7-4 win over the Ducks.

     

    Pittsburgh would win their sixth consecutive road game, the longest since an eight game road win streak that occured late during the 2015-16 season.

    Florida’s Aaron Ekblad would score the lone goal for the Panthers and when he did, he would become the top goal scorer among defenceman in Panthers history.

    The Washington Capitals would go on to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 to notch their first win at home in the year 2019.

    Between both teams, there would be the 27th instance in League history when the Capitals and Flyers would score two goals in four seconds or less.

     

    TJ Oshie would register his 200th NHL goal in this contest when he scored at the 9:19 mark in the second period.

    Dallas’ Miro Heiskanen registered his 20th point on the season in the contest and marked the fifth time in the past six seasons in which multiple teenage defenceman have had at least 20+ points in a season.
