NHL Rookie of the Month – Hutson Earns March Honor

Today the National Hockey League has announced the Rookie of the Month for the month of March 2025.

    Lane Hutson (D – MON)

    • Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson, who paced all rookies with 14 assists and 15 points in 14 games (1-14—15) to lift the Canadiens (34-30-9, 77 points) into the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, has been named the NHL’s “Rookie of the Month” for March.

Hutson edged Philadelphia Flyers right wing Matvei Michkov (5-9—14 in 16 GP), Anaheim Ducks left wing Cutter Gauthier (3-10—13 in 15 GP), St. Louis Blues center Zack Bolduc (8-3—11 in 15 GP), and San Jose Sharks teammates Will Smith (4-7—11 in 13 GP) and Macklin Celebrini (3-8—11 in 13 GP) for the honor.

Hutson, who previously was named “Rookie of the Month” for December, joins Michkov (October and February) as a repeat winner this season. He is the first defenseman to earn the honor multiple times within the same campaign since Nicklas Lidstrom in 1991-92 (November and December w/ DET) and the first Canadiens player at any position with multiple “Rookie of the Month” recognitions in the same season since center Kjell Dahlin in 1985-86 (October and December).

Hutson, a second-round pick (62nd overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft, became the first rookie defenseman with at least 14 assists in a single calendar month since Alexei Zhitnik in March 1993 (5‑14—19 in 14 GP w/ LAK). Only two other rookie blueliners since Zhitnik have compiled at least 15 points in a single calendar month: Cale Makar in November 2019 (7-9—16 in 14 GP w/ COL) and Quinn Hughes in February 2020 (2-13—15 in 13 GP w/ VAN).

      Hutson additionally ranked among the top three March rookie skaters in total time on ice (1st; 327:08), average time on ice (1st; 23:22), power-play assists (1st; 6), power-play points (t-1st; 6), even-strength assists (3rd; 8), even-strength points (3rd; 9) and plus/minus (t-3rd; +7).

He found the score sheet in nine of his 14 March appearances, including five multi-assist/point performances and his second career three-assist game (March 30 at FLA). His 14 total multi-assist efforts in 2024-25 are tied for the second-most in a season by a rookie blueliner in NHL history, behind just Chris Chelios in 1984-85 (16 w/ MTL).

The 21-year-old Hutson tops all rookies, forwards and defensemen, with 5-54—59 through 73 overall contests in 2024-25. He also leads rookies in assists (54), total time on ice (1,651:16), average time on ice (22:37), even-strength assists (30), power-play assists (24) and power-play points (25).

Only two rookie defensemen in League history have accumulated more assists in a single campaign: Larry Murphy in 1980-81 (60 w/ LAK) and Chelios in 1984-85 (55 w/ MTL). Hutson also is one of 10 rookie blueliners in NHL history with at least 59 points in a season – and the first since Lidstrom in 1991-92 (11-49—60 w/ DET).

NHL Stars of the Week – Kucherov Strikes for Top Honors

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of March 24th through 30th.

First Star – Nikita Kucherov (RW – TB)

    • Kucherov paced the NHL with 3-8—11 in three games to overtake Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (30-79—109 in 74 GP) for the lead in the Art Ross Trophy race and lift the Lightning (43-25-5, 91 points) into second place in the Atlantic Division via a perfect week. He notched 1-2—3, his 13th three-point performance of the campaign, in a 6-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins March 25. Kucherov then registered consecutive four-point games for the sixth time in his career, posting 1-3—4 in both an 8-0 triumph versus the Utah Hockey Club March 27 and a 5-3 win over the New York Islanders March 29. The 31-year-old Kucherov, who has recorded at least three points in three straight contests for the fourth time in his career and has accumulated 5-12—17 during an eight-game point streak dating to March 15, tops the League with 33-76—109 through 69 total appearances this season. The reigning Art Ross Trophy winner (44-100—144 in 81 GP in 2023-24) also ranks among the 2024-25 NHL leaders in power-play assists (1st; 33), power-play points (1st; 40), three-point games (1st; 15), assists (2nd; 76), four-point games (2nd; 4), game-winning goals (t-2nd; 9), even-strength assists (3rd; 43), even-strength points (3rd; 69), multi-point games (t-4th; 29), shots on goal (9th; 238) and even-strength goals (t-9th; 26).

He compiled five assists over his first two appearances, picking up two helpers in a 3-0 triumph against the Minnesota Wild March 24 and three apples (all in the second period as part of Jason Robertson’s natural hat trick) in a 4-3 win versus the Edmonton Oilers March 26. Hintz followed that with 1-1—2 in each of his next two outings, a 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames March 27 and a 5-1 decision against the Seattle Kraken March 29 (featuring his 200th career assist as well as his seventh game-winning goal of the campaign). The 28-year-old Hintz has produced 27-37—64 through 67 total appearances in 2024-25, marking his fourth consecutive season with at least 60 points.

Mike’s STH Xperience – Continuing the Chase

Welcome to Mike’s Season Ticket Holder (STH) Xperience!

This season is my first one as a Season Ticket holder for the Washington Capitals, and in place of doing Caps Game Recaps, I’ll be sharing my experience being a STH during the 2024-25 season. Here I’ll be sharing all of the photos that I take during pregame warmups, along with any FB/IG Reels and TikToks I create at the games.

I will also be doing this for any other games I may go to, whether it’s in Hershey for the Bears, or at other NHL venues for games.

The Washington Capitals end March with a visit from the Buffalo Sabres.

Originally drafted by Hartford in 1983, defenseman Joe Reekie was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 1985, and spent 4 years with the Sabres. Reekie was later traded by Tampa Bay to the Washington Capitals on March 21st, 1994, and he spent the next 9 years with the Capitals until being traded to Chicago on January 17th, 2002.

Reekie recorded 75 points in 515 games played with the Capitals, and was a part of the team that went to the 1998 Stanley Cup Final.

    Thoughts on the Game

The regular season is coming to a close soon, and with only four home games left the odds of seeing Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record at home grows slim, but I’m remaining hopeful.

As for the game itself, this is definitely one the Capitals wish they could have back, especially Logan Thompson. Jakob Chychrun scored a pair to reach 20 goals and Aliaksei Protas scored shorthanded to reach 30 goals for the first time in his career. So definitely some positives, but the Capitals will need to turn it around as this was their third straight loss.

The other positive, Ovechkin netting goal 890 to bring himself within 5 goals of breaking Gretzky’s record. I’m still hopeful that he breaks it soon.
