    • Detroit Red Wings v. Buffalo Sabres – 7p ET
      • In Buffalo the Sabres would play host to the Detroit Red Wings, and in the first period Casey Mittelstadt to give the Sabres the 1-0 lead. In the second period Jeff Skinner would strike while Mittelstadt would net his second of the game and Kyle Okposo would score a pair of goals to give the Sabres the five goal lead. Then in the third period Dominik Kubalik would net a pair of goals while Jordan Oesterle would score to get the Wings on the board, but Okposo would net his third of the game to complete the hat trick and give the Sabres the 6-3 victory over the Red Wings.

    • Montreal Canadiens v. Florida Panthers – 7p ET
      • In Florida the Panthers would take on the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Arber Xhekaj and Josh Anderson would strike for the Habs, but Aleksander Barkov would record a hat trick to give the Panthers the 3-2 lead. In the second period Matthew Tkachuk would score to give the Panthers the two goal lead. Then in the third period Tkachuk would net his second of the game and tallies from Carter Verhaeghe and Eetu Luostarinen would give the Panthers the 7-2 victory over the Canadiens.

    • New York Rangers v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET
      • In Tampa Bay the New York Rangers would look to calm the Lightning, and in the first period Mika Zibanejad would score to give the Rangers the 1-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Brayden Point would score to tie the game at one as the Bolts would force overtime. After a scoreless extra five minutes of hockey it would be Alex Killorn with the winner in the shootout to give the Lightning the 2-1 victory over the Rangers.

    • Ottawa Senators v. Washington Capitals – 7p ET
      • In Washington DC it would be the final battle of the nation’s capitals as the Ottawa Senators would face off with the Capitals, and after a scoreless first period Alex Ovechkin would net 803 and Dylan Strome would score to give the Caps the 2-0 lead, but Jake Sanderson would score to get the Sens on the board and back by the one. However, Evgeny Kuznetsov would score to retake the two goal lead for the Caps, but after a very questionable non-call Tim Stutzle would score to get the Sens back within one. Then in the third period Alex DeBrincat would strike to tie the game at three for the Sens. In the extra frame DeBrincat would net his second of the game to give the Senators the 4-3 overtime victory over the Capitals.

    • Columbus Blue Jackets v. New York Islanders – 730p ET
      • On Long Island the New York Islanders would play host to the Columbus Blue Jackets, and after a scoreless first period Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Mathew Barzal would score to give the Isles the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period Emil Bemstrom would score for the Jackets, but the Islanders would hold on for the 2-1 victory over the Blue Jackets.

      • In St. Louis the Blues would play host to their Central Division rival Chicago Blackhawks, and in the first period Josh Leivo would open the scoring for the Blues, but Patrick Kane would score to tie the game at one for the Blackhawks. In the second period Calle Rosen would score to give the Blues the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Brandon Saad would score to give the Blues the 3-1 victory over the Blackhawks.

      • In Minnesota the Wild would host the Dallas Stars, and in the first period Tyler Seguin would score for the Stars, but Kirill Kaprizov would strike to tie the game at one for the Wild.       • In Winnipeg the Vancouver Canucks would come to town to take on the Jets, and in the first period Andrei Kuzmenko would score to give the Canucks the 1-0 lead. In the second period Mark Scheifele would record a pair of goals while Pierre-Luc Dubois would score to give the Jets the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Conor Garland would score for the Canucks, but Scheifele would complete the hat trick to give the Jets the 4-2 victory over the Canucks.

      • In Colorado the Avalanche would play host to the Los Angeles Kings, and in the first period Gabe Vilardi would score to give the Kings the 1-0 lead. In the second period JT Compher would score to tie the game at one for the Avs, but Phillip Danault would score for the Kings to retake the lead. However, Andrew Cogliano, Cale Makar, and Evan Rodrigues would score to give the Avs the 4-2 lead.     • The Washington Capitals have loaned forward Beck Malenstyn to Hershey of the AHL.

    • The NHL has fined the Toronto Maple Leafs for violating the CBA.
      • The Leafs were fined $100,000 for the team’s travel to St. Louis on Dec. 26th which is a violation of Article 16.5(b) of the CBA.

    • The NHL also fined Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe.
      • Keefe was fined $25,000 for demeaning conduct directed at the officials in St. Louis on Tuesday night.

    • Montreal Canadiens v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET
      • In Tampa the Lightning host the Canadiens. In the first, Tampa Bay gets a pair of goals when Alex Killorn scores his 10th of the year and then Brayden Point scores his 18th of the year on the power play to make it a 2-0 Lightning lead. In the second, Brayden Point scores his second of the night to increase the Tampa lead to 3-0. In the third, Brandon Hagel scores his 13th of the year to make it a 4-0 Bolts lead but then Montreal finally gets on the board when Kaiden Guhle scores his second of the year, however the Lightning breeze by the Canadiens to get the 4-1 win.

      • In New Jersey, the Devils host the Bruins. After a scoreless first, Trent Frederic nets his seventh of the year to give the Bruins the 1-0 lead after 40. In the third, New Jersey gets on the board when Nico Hischier scores his 14th of the year to tie the game but then Boston re-takes the lead when Patrice Bergeron scores his 14th of the year. Pavel Zacha shuts the door on the contest when he nets an empty net goal, his fifth goal on the year, as the Bruins escape with the 3-1 win over the Devils.

    • The NHL announced that for the second week in a row Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has been named the First Star of the Week.
      • Alexander Georgiev (COL) and Elias Pettersson (VAN) would round out the rest of the Three Stars.
    • NHL Stars of the Week – History Earns Ovi Top Honors Second Week in a Row

    • Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin would net a pair of goals on Friday night against the Winnipeg Jets to tie and surpass Gordie Howe for second all time in goals scored in the NHL.
      • Ovechkin is now 92 goals shy from tying Wayne Gretzky for most goals all time.

    • On Friday the NHL Department of Player Safety suspended Minnesota Wild forward Mason Shaw.
      • Shaw was suspended two games for kneeing San Jose Sharks forward Evgeny Svechnikov on Thursday night.
      • Shaw will forfeit $8,108.10 in salary based on his average annual salary per the terms of the CBA.

    NHL Stars of the Week – History Earns Ovi Top Honors Second Week in a Row

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of December 19th through 23rd.

    First Star – Alex Ovechkin (LW – WAS)

    • In three games played for the Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin recorded two goals and four assists for six points. He would start off the week with an assist in a 4-3 comeback overtime victory over Detroit on Dec. 19th, then on Dec. 22nd against Ottawa Ovechkin would record two more assists in a 3-2 overtime victory. Then to close out the week Ovechkin would make history as he would record two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory over Winnipeg on Dec. 23rd. Ovechkin’s first goal would tie him with Gordie Howe for second in goals scored, and then his late empty netter would allow Ovechkin to surpass Howe to take second place all for himself. Ovechkin is now 92 goals shy of tying Wayne Gretzky for first place in goals scored.

    Second Star – Alexander Georgiev (G – COL)

    • Alexander Georgiev would go 3-0-0 with a .94 goals against average and a .965 save percentage with one shutout. Georgiev would open the week with a 26 save 1-0 shootout victory over the New York Islanders on Dec. 19th to record his 10th career shutout. Then on Dec. 21st against Montreal he would make 19 saves in a 2-1 victory, and to close out the week Georgiev would make 37 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory over Nashville on Dec. 23rd.

    Third Star – Elias Pettersson (C – VAN)

    • Elias Pettersson would record two goals and five assists for seven points in two games played for the Vancouver Canucks. In his first game of the week Pettersson would record two goals and three assists in a 6-5 shootout victory over Seattle on Dec. 22nd, and to close out the week he would record two assists in a 5-2 victory over Edmonton on Dec. 23rd.

    • Philadelphia Flyers v. Toronto Maple Leafs* – 2p ET
      • In Toronto for a rare early afternoon matinee on a weekday the Maple Leafs would play host to the Philadelphia Flyers, and in the first period Tony DeAngelo would score to give the Flyers the 1-0 lead. In the second period Calle Jarnkrok would deflect the puck past Carter Hart to tie the game at one, and then Mitch Marner would score for the Leafs to take the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee would score for the Flyers, but goals from Michael Bunting and William Nylander would give the Maple Leafs the 4-3 victory over the Flyers.

    • Alex Ovechkin would make history as he would become the third player in NHL history to reach 800 career goals as he would record three goals and two assists for five points in three games played for the Washington Capitals. Ovi would open the week by scoring a hat trick and tallying an assist in a 7-3 victory over Chicago on Dec. 13th. The third goal of the hat trick would give Ovechkin his 800th career NHL goal. The on Dec. 15th Ovechkin would get an assist in a 2-1 loss to Dallas, and he would be held off of the scoresheet against Toronto on Dec. 17th.

    Second Star – Tage Thompson (C – BUF)

    • Tage Thompson would earn the Second Star of the Week honors for a second consecutive week after record four goals and four assists for eight points in three games played for the Buffalo Sabres. To open up the week Thompson would record two goals and an assist in a 6-0 victory over Los Angeles on Dec. 13th, and on Dec. 15th he would record a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory over Colorado. Then to close out the week Thompson would record a goal and two assists in a 5-2 victory over Arizona on Dec. 17th.

    Third Star – Mats Zuccarello (RW – MIN)

    • Mats Zuccarello would record five goals and three assists for eight points in four games for the Minnesota Wild, and he would start off the week with an assist in a 2-1 victory over Edmonton on Dec. 12th. Then on Dec. 14th against Detroit he would score a goal in the Wild’s 4-2 victory, and on Dec. 16th against Chicago Zuccarello would record a hat trick and an assist in a 4-1 victory. To close out the week Zuccarello would record a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory over Ottawa on Dec. 18th.
