    Welcome to Mike’s Season Ticket Holder (STH) Xperience!

    This season is my first one as a Season Ticket holder for the Washington Capitals, and in place of doing Caps Game Recaps, I’ll be sharing my experience being a STH during the 2024-25 season. Here I’ll be sharing all of the photos that I take during pregame warmups, along with any FB/IG Reels and TikToks I create at the games.

    I will also be doing this for any other games I may go to, whether it’s in Hershey for the Bears, or at other NHL venues for games.

    The Washington Capitals host the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

    On March 9th, 1998, the Washington Capitals acquired forward Esa Tikkanen from the Florida Panthers. Tikkanen, a 5-time Stanley Cup champion, played in 20 games for the Capitals recording two goals and 12 points.

    During the 1998 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Tikkanen played in all 21 games recording three goals and three assists for six points as the Capitals went to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history.

    Tikkanen is famously known for missing an empty net in Game 2 that allowed the Detroit Red Wings to comeback and win the game and eventual series.

    Thoughts on the Game

    With the Stanley Cup champs in town, the Capitals looked to test their mettle against the Panthers and a test it was.

    This was a solid game for the Capitals, as they got key goals from players Andrew Mangiapane, Tom Wilson, Lars Eller, Nic Dowd, and Alex Ovechkin for the 6-3 victory.

    It was a win the Capitals really needed after dropping their last game in overtime to the Winnipeg Jets.

    Also, Ovechkin, with the fake out with 3 seconds left in the game to get the empty netter with a tenth of a second left in the game to inch closer to Wayne Gretzky. That was fun to watch.

    NHL Stars of the Week – Sorokin Shines for Top Honors

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of January 27th through February 2nd.

    First Star – Ilya Sorokin (G – NYI)

    • Sorokin went 3-0-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average, .953 save percentage and one shutout to help the Islanders (24-21-7, 55 points) – who ran their win streak to seven games, their longest since Feb. 28 – March 14, 2021 (9 GP), before suffering a Sunday defeat – move within four points of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. He stopped 30 shots, including all 14 he faced in the first period, in a 5-2 victory against the Colorado Avalanche Jan. 28. Sorokin then earned his 21st career shutout (all w/ NYI) – one shy of equaling Billy Smith for second place in franchise history – with 23 saves in a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Jan. 30. He finished the week with 28 stops in a 3-2 overtime triumph versus the Tampa Bay Lightning Feb. 1 to extend his personal winning streak to six games dating to Jan. 20 (1.19 GAA, .958 SV%, 1 SO), two back of his career high established from Feb. 16 – March 22, 2021 (8 GP). The 29-year-old Sorokin has played in 37 total contests this season, compiling a 19-14-4 record, 2.63 goals-against average, .908 save percentage and three shutouts.

    Second Star – Tage Thompson (C – BUF)

    • Thompson led the NHL with 4-4—8 and a +9 rating in three games to propel the Sabres (21-26-5, 47 points) to a perfect week. He notched 3-1—4, including his seventh career hat trick (all w/ BUF – 7th in franchise history), in a 7-2 victory over the Boston Bruins Jan. 28. Thompson – along with teammate JJ Peterka (3-1—4) – also set a personal best with a +6 rating, the highest plus/minus by a Buffalo player since Feb. 2, 1998 (Richard Smehlik: +6 at TBL). Thompson then collected the primary assist on Jiri Kulich’s tiebreaking goal with 2:04 remaining in regulation in a 4-3 triumph against the Nashville Predators Jan. 31 before closing the week with 1-2—3, highlighted by his 300th career point, in a 4-3 win versus the New Jersey Devils Feb. 2. The 27-year-old Thompson, who shares eighth place in the League with 26 goals this season, tops the Sabres with 26-22—48 through 47 total contests in 2024-25.

    Third Star – Jake Sanderson (D – OTT)

    • Sanderson totaled 2-4—6 in two games to power the Senators (28-20-4, 60 points) – who occupy third place in the Atlantic Division – to their fourth straight victory dating to Jan. 25. He collected 1-1—2, recording an assist while shorthanded and a goal while on the power play, in a 5-4 overtime win against the Eastern Conference-leading Washington Capitals Jan. 30. Sanderson then established a personal high with 1-3—4, including his 100th career NHL point, in a 6-0 victory over the Minnesota Wild Feb. 1. The 22-year-old Sanderson paces Ottawa blueliners and ranks 16th among all NHL defensemen with 4‑29—33 through 51 total appearances this season, five points shy of his career high set in 2023-24 (10‑28—38 in 79 GP).

    The Washington Capitals return home to faceoff with the Winnipeg Jets. Plus, it’s the third Era’s Night for the Capitals.

    On April 7th, 1995, the Washington Capitals acquired forward Mike Eagles and defenseman Igor Ulanov from the Winnipeg Jets for a pair of draft picks in the 1995 NHL Draft.

    Eagles would spend the last five seasons of his NHL career with the Capitals recording 13 goals and 35 points in 266 games played. Eagles played a role on the team that made it to the 1998 Stanley Cup Final.

    Ulanov only played three games for the Capitals before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on October 17th, 1995.

    Thoughts on the Game

    It was good to be back at Capital One Arena for a Capitals game, and one of the things I noticed right away was those things I talked about when I went to Toronto to take in a Maple Leafs game. There was energy throughout the game, even when the Capitals were trailing the Jets. Take note Toronto.

    As for the game itself, it was an ok game for the Capitals. IT was clear there was still some road fatigue the team was dealing with, plus taking on the Jets, who are at the top of the NHL for a reason, was a healthy challenge for their first game back at home. It was great to see an Alex Ovechkin goal at home again.

    NHL 3 Stars of the Month – Pasta Rules January

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Stars of the Month for the month of January 2025.

    First Star – David Pastrnak (RW – BOS)

    • Pastrnak topped the NHL in goals (t-11) and points (24) across 14 games (11-13—24) to help the Bruins (25-22-6, 56 points) earn standings points in half of their January contests (5-7-2). Pastrnak, who factored on 58.5 percent of Boston’s total goals during the month (24 of 41), also ranked among the January leaders in even-strength goals (1st; 9), even-strength points (1st; 18), shots on goal (3rd; 59), even-strength assists (t-3rd; 9) and assists (t-4th; 13). He found the score sheet in all but two of his 14 appearances, notching eight multi-point performances and closing the month with assists in a career-best nine straight games (Jan. 11-30: 7-12—19). Pastrnak’s 24 points matched a career high for any calendar month (also October 2019: 12-12—24 in 12 GP) and marked the most by a Bruins player since April 2021, when Brad Marchand registered 14-10—24 in 17 contests. The 28-year-old Pastrnak paces Boston in goals (24), assists (37) and points (61) through 53 total games this season, compiling 21 more points than his next-closest teammate (Marchand: 19-21—40 in 53 GP). Pastrnak also sits among the 2024-25 NHL leaders in shots on goal (1st; 215), even-strength points (t-3rd; 47), even-strength assists (t-5th; 29), points (9th; 61), goals (t-11th; 24) and even-strength goals (t-13th; 18).

    Second Star – Logan Thompson (G – WAS)

    • Thompson went 8-0-1 with a 1.48 goals-against average, .947 save percentage and two shutouts in nine appearances as the Capitals (34-11-6, 74 points) completed a 9-1-4 January to create a six-point cushion atop the Eastern Conference. Thompson yielded two or fewer goals in seven of his nine games, including each of his last six to end the month (Jan. 11-28: 6-0-0, 0.83 GAA, .969 SV%, 2 SO). He earned consecutive shutouts Jan. 14 vs. ANA (19 SV) and Jan. 16 at OTT (24 SV), totaling a career-high 198:22 shutout sequence from Jan. 11-18 that ranked third in franchise history behind just Pat Riggin (203:52 in 1983-84) and Jim Carey (200:04 in 1995-96). The 27-year-old Thompson, who signed a six-year contract extension with Washington on Jan. 27, stretched his overall point streak to 12 contests dating to Dec. 22 (11-0-1, 1.45 GAA, .949 SV%, 2 SO) – the fifth-longest in Capitals history. He owns a 23-2-3 record in 28 total appearances this season, placing among the League leaders (minimum: 17 GP) in save percentage (1st; .927), goals-against average (2nd; 2.05) and wins (3rd; 23). Only one goaltender in NHL history has required fewer games to reach 23 victories in a season: Tiny Thompson in 1929-30 (23-4-0 in 27 GP w/ BOS).

    Third Star – Zach Werenski (D – CLB)

    • Werenski produced 6-11—17 and a +9 rating in 14 contests to lift the Blue Jackets (26-19-7, 59 points) into the first Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference via a 10-3-1 month. Werenski, who placed second among all skaters (forwards and defensemen) in both total (392:18) and average (28:01) time on ice, ranked among the leading January blueliners in even-strength goals (1st; 6), even-strength assists (1st; 10), even-strength points (1st; 16), shots on goal (1st; 52), points (t-1st; 17), goals (t-2nd; 6), game-winning goals (t-2nd; 2), assists (t-3rd; 11) and plus/minus (t-4th; +9). He registered points in 11 of his 14 outings, including five multi-point performances, and notched an even or better plus/minus rating 11 times. Werenski finished the month on a five-game point streak (Jan. 22-31: 2-4—6), punctuated by his seventh career overtime goal (all w/ CBJ) Jan. 31 at UTA. The 27-year-old Werenski, who is slated to represent the United States at February’s 4 Nations Face-Off, sits among the top defensemen in total time on ice (1st; 1,395:23), game-winning goals (1st; 4), shots on goal (1st; 197), overtime goals (t-1st; 2), goals (2nd; 17), assists (2nd; 40) and points (3rd; 57) through 52 total appearances this season.

    NHL Rookie of the Month – Wolf Ignites for Top Honors

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Rookie of the Month for the month of January 2025.

    Dustin Wolf (G – CAL)

    • Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf, who led all rookies with seven wins in 10 games (7-3-0, 2.32 GAA, .922 SV%), has been named the NHL’s “Rookie of the Month” for January.

      Wolf edged Ottawa Senators goaltender Leevi Meriläinen (5-2-1, 2.02 GAA, .928 SV%, 2 SO), Montreal Canadiens teammates Jakub Dobes (4-1-1, 2.43 GAA, .912 SV%) and Lane Hutson (1-12—13 in 14 GP), and Detroit Red Wings center Marco Kasper (7-5—12 in 14 GP) for the honor.

      Wolf, who also topped January rookie netminders in games played (10), saves (270) and shots against (293), became the second rookie goaltender in Flames history to win at least seven contests in a single calendar month. The other: Mike Vernon, in both November 1986 (9-3-0, 3.09 GAA, .897 SV%, 1 SO in 12 GP) and December 1986 (7-3-1, 3.16 GAA, .900 SV% in 11 GP).

      Wolf yielded two or fewer goals in six of his 10 starts and made at least 25 saves six times – highlighted by a season-high 38 stops in a 3-1 victory over the League-leading Winnipeg Jets Jan. 18. Four of his seven wins came on the road (4-1-0, 2.59 GAA, .911 SV%), tied for the most by any netminder (rookie or veteran) in January.

      The 23-year-old Wolf, a seventh-round pick (214th overall) from the 2019 NHL Draft, paces NHL rookies and shares eighth place in the entire League (rookies and veterans) with 19 wins through 29 total appearances this season (19-8-2, 2.51 GAA, .917 SV%, 2 SO). The Gilroy native, one of five California-born goaltenders in NHL history, also tops 2024-25 rookie netminders in games played (29), saves (802), shots against (875), shutouts (t-2) and assists/points (3).

      Wolf follows Philadelphia Flyers right wing Matvei Michkov (October: 4-5—9 in 11 GP), San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini (November: 7-5—12 in 14 GP) and Hutson (December: 2-11—13 in 14 GP) as a “Rookie of the Month” winner in 2024-25. He is the first Calgary player to receive the recognition since left wing Johnny Gaudreau, who was honored twice during the 2014-15 season (December 2014: 8-5—13 in 14 GP, March 2015: 7-9—16 in 15 GP).
