    There were three Stanley Cup playoffs games  in action yesterday.  All the recaps are written by TXHT’s staff.

     

     

    Dallas 5, NASHVILLE 3 (Dallas leads the series 3-2)

     

    Game 5, 3-2 DAL

     

    The Dallas Stars are one win away from advancing to the second round after they defeated the Nashville Predators yesterday by the score of 5-3.

    ST. LOUIS 3, Winnipeg 2 (St. Louis wins the series 4-2)

     

    Game 6. 4-2 STL

     

    The St. Louis Blues defeated the Winnipeg Jets by the score of 3-2 and have advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.  The Blues await the winner of the series between the Predators and Stars.

    WASHINGTON 6, Carolina 0 (Washington leads the series 3-2)

     

    Game 5. 3-2 WSH

     

    The Washington Capitals crushed the Carolina Hurricanes last night with a 6-0 win and are one win away from facing off against the NY Islanders in the second round.

    There are two contests taking place today in Stanley Cup playoff action with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights looking to advance to the second round.

  • Winnipeg Jets vs St. Louis Blues – Game 5 Recap

    Winnipeg Jets vs St. Louis Blues – Game 5 Recap

    The St. Louis Blues came out absolutely firing in Game 5 against the Winnipeg Jets and took the lead within the first 30 seconds, with game 4 hero Jaden Schwartz giving the Blues a 1-0 lead. This was a goal that Connor Hellebuyck should have had. The Blues applied inexorable pressure the rest of the first period, and it actually was Hellebuyck (to my surprise) that kept the Jets in the game.

    The second period brought more of the same, and this time the Blues benefitted by an egregiously stupid penalty by Dustin Byfuglien, who inexplicably punched David Perron on the St. Louis bench. Jaden Schwartz capitalized with his second goal of the night, though not without some controversy.

    Hellebuyck and the rest of the Jets clamored for goalie interference after Pat Maroon made contact with Hellebuyck. I can’t really say it was not interference, but the Jets’ coach wasted their challenge asserting goalie interference on the first goal, so no review took place.

    The third period brought, you guessed it, another goal by Jaden Schwartz.

    The Jets brought a solid effort in the third, especially considering they were held to 11 shots in the first two periods. They fought back and scored two goals late (from Byfuglien and Bryan Little), but it was not enough.

    The Blues move on – while most experts did not see this coming, I’ll link to an analytics guy I like to follow on Twitter (@IneffectiveMath) who did put the Blues, initially, as favorites:

    St. Louis will take on the winner of the Dallas Stars – Nashville Predators series.

    There were three contests in Stanley Cup playoff action yesterday and the recaps are written by the TXHT staff.

     

    Yesterday’s Results:

     

     

    CAROLINA 2, Washington 1 (Series is tied 2-2)

     

    Game 4. 2-2 Tie

     

    The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Washington Capitals by the score of 2-1 last night to tie their series at 2-2.  Both teams will look to take the 3-2 series lead when Game 5 takes place tomorrow night (April 20th) at Capital One Arena.

    St. Louis 3, WINNIPEG 2 (St. Louis leads the series 3-2)

     

    Game 5. 3-2 STL

     

    The St. Louis Blues would come back after being down 2-0 to defeat the Winnipeg Jets by the score of 3-2, to take the lead in the series.  The Blues will look to advance to the second round when Game 6 of this series takes place tomorrow night (April 20th) at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

    SAN JOSE 5, Vegas 2 (Vegas leads the series 3-2)

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Today there are only two games in Stanley Cup playoff action…

     

    The Colorado Avalanche look to advance to the second round in their series and either the Boston Bruins or Toronto Maple Leafs will take the 3-2 series lead.

    St.Louis Blues vs Winnipeg Jets – Round 1 – Game #5 Recap

    St. Louis (3-2) v. Winnipeg Jets (2-3)

     

    Game Recap:

    The Blues looked to be having a very lackluster effort through the first two periods of this game. Winnipeg scored just twelve seconds into this game and looked to just keep going scoring another in the period. Not giving anything to the Blues in the way of chances at all.

    Jordan Binnington held the Blues pat only allowing the two goals in the 1st period and shutting the door on all the Jets chances in the 2nd period setting the stage for a potential comeback for the Blues in the 3rd. Jacob Trouba would take a roughing penalty on Vladimir Tarasenko to end the period and give the Blues a Powerplay to start.

    In the 3rd the Blues would take their play up a notch. Ryan O’Reilly would score in the powerplay 1:29 into the 3rd. Then at 13:52 Brayden Schenn would tie it up and the Blues would continue the game take over, Winnipeg would try and push back but couldn’t match the intensity and then with fifteen seconds left in the 3rd period Jaden Schwartz would bat a Tyler Bozak  rebound out of the air and score to bring the comeback full swing. three unanswered goals in the 3rd.

    The Winnipeg Jets tied their series with the St. Louis Blues with a 2-1 win in overtime.  Winnipeg will look to take the 3-2 series lead when Game 5 shifts back to Winnipeg.

  • Game 4 Recap – Winnipeg Jets v. St. Louis Blues

    Game 4 Recap – Winnipeg Jets v. St. Louis Blues

    The start of the Winnipeg Jets – St. Louis Blues game was a lot slower and less eventful than that of the first several games, with neither team taking charge or creating a large amount of (quality) chances. The Jets had some opportunities on their first power play, but Jordan Binnington stood tall and kept the game tied at zero, where it stood at the end of the first period. The Blues actually managed to block one of Patrick Laine’s shots.

    The second period was much more wide open, with both teams trading off quality chances. Connor Hellebuyck has kept the Jets in it (as opposed to decidedly keeping them out of it in games 1-2). The Blues played well (except Jaden Schwartz) and it seemed like the Jets were always on their heels.

    The Blues opened up the third with a power-play goal by Vladimir Tarasenko, his second in two games (funny what happens when Schwartz and Jori Lehtera aren’t his linemates).

    The Jets fired back just after the seven-minute mark of the third period when Mark Scheifele tipped home a shot to tie the game up at 1 a-piece. Binnington and Helebyuck would stand their ground for the rest of the period and this game would head off to overtime.

    Overtime would open up and see some chances at both ends but both goalies stood their ground. Until Mark Scheifele would take the puck up ice and dish it off to Kyle Connor would seal the deal and put the puck into the gaping net. Winnipeg ties the series at 2-2 and sends it back home to Winnipeg for a crucial game 5.

    There were four Stanley Cup playoff games in action yesterday.

     

     

    NY Islanders 4, PITTSBURGH 1 (NY Islanders lead the series 3-0)

    The NY Islanders are one game away from advancing to the second round of the playoffs after downing the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 4-1 win.

    NHL Playoffs: Rd 1 Game 3 Review: Isles Take A Commanding Lead In The Series

     

    Winnipeg 6, ST. LOUIS 3 (St. Louis leads the series 2-1)

     

    Game 3. 2-1 STL

     

    The Winnipeg jets defeated the St. Louis Blues last night, 6-3, and look to tie the series at 2 games a piece with game 4 taking place Tuesday night.

    The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1 and with the win, Columbus is one win away from knocking out the Presidents’ Trophy winner.  If that happens when Game 4 takes place tomorrow night, the Lightning will become the first team to win the Presidents’ Trophy AND be swept in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

    Game Three Recap – Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

     

    VEGAS 6, San Jose 3 (Vegas leads the series 2-1)

     

    The Vegas Golden Knights would win on home ice and take the series lead with the 6-3 win over the San Jose Sharks last night.

    Mark Stone would have a three goal game and Paul Stastny would have two goals of his own in this contest.

    The Golden Knights would also go 2 for 5 on Power Play chances and would outshoot the Blues with 40 shots on goal to the Blues 28.

    Vegas will look to take the commanding 3-1 series lead when the two teams face off for Game 4 Tuesday night at 10:30 p.m., ET.

    Today Toronto Maple Leafs Nazem Kadri will have his in-person meeting with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety for his cross-checking of Boston’s Jake DeBrusk.

     

     

    In other hockey news….

     

    The United States would take home the gold in the IIHF Women’s World Championships in a shootout win over Finland.  This game would not come without controversy after an initial game-winner by Finland was disallowed after a questionable penalty.

  • Game 3 Recap – Winnipeg Jets v. St. Louis Blues

    Game 3 Recap – Winnipeg Jets v. St. Louis Blues

    Once again, the Winnipeg Jets came out playing much better than the St. Louis Blues, taking an 11-4 lead in shots. However, a timely shot by David Perron (who should be immortalized in STL lore because of his unwavering desire to keep coming back to the city), gave the Blues a 1-0 lead, with Jordan Binnington picking up the vaunted goalie assist (#assistington?).

    It stayed that way until the second when Kevin Hayes scored a flukey goal that was tipped in by Alex Pietrangelo. Then Patrick Laine scored. Sure, why not – what’s a game between these teams without Laine scoring. His shoulder has to be tired by now, right? Kyle Connor then makes it 3-1 on a 4 on 3 PP.

    The third period Brough two more goals for WPG – one a nice play, one a rather poor goal let up by Binnington (hopefully no more of those). The Blues managed one, but this was not their game. The final ended up being 6-3, but it was a lot more lopsided than that.

    Connor Hellebuyck wasn’t there to bail them out this time. If the Blues play like this the rest of the way, expect WPG to win in 6.

    I don’t expect the same play in Game 4, Wednesday at 9:30 PM Eastern.

    The St. Louis Blues defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 yesterday and took a 2-0 series lead.

     

    St. Louis will look to take the commanding 3-0 series lead with the series now shifting to St. Louis.  Game 3 takes place tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m., ET

     

     

    Vegas 5, SAN JOSE 3 (Series is tied 1-1)

     

    The Vegas Golden Knights would go on to take Game 2 in the series after giving up a three goal lead in the first period and defeat the San Jose Sharks 5-3.

     

    The Golden Knights will look to take the series lead with Game 3 taking place tomorrow (Sunday, April 14) at 10 p.m., ET.

  • Game Recap – 1st Rd. Game 2 – St. Louis Blues v. Winnipeg Jets

    Game Recap – 1st Rd. Game 2 – St. Louis Blues v. Winnipeg Jets

    The Blues experienced a much different start of the game in Game 2, with Oskar Sundqvist scoring early on to take a 1-0 lead. The Blues spent the majority of the first 10 minutes on the power play because of a few rather egregious cross-checks by the Jets, but  were not able to capitalize. When Colton Parayko was not aware that penalty time was expiring and had his shot blocked, Blake Wheeler took advantage and quickly scored to tie it at one. Overall, not a great period, given the opportunities the Blues had.

    The Jets came out flying in the second, and basically dominated the first several minutes, but for a few spectacular saves from Jordan Binnington. After Robert Bortuzzo took a senseless, senseless interference penalty, the Blues, naturally, left Patrick Laine completely open for another goal to give the Jets a 2-1 lead. The Jets kept up their inexorable pressure after, but an incredible play by Robert Thomas led to a Pat Maroon goal to make it 2-2. Sundqvist’s second goal gave them a 3-2 lead – soft goal by Connor Hellebuyck, who has not been nearly good enough this series. Now seems like a good time for a friendly reminder that the Blues traded Ryan Reaves for Sundqvist and high-potential prospect Klim Kostin, which…wow.

    Play evened out after that, with Hellebuyck making a tremendous (see: lucky) save on O’Reilly to keep the blues from taking a 4-2 lead. Shortly thereafter, a (weak) penalty call on Robert Thomas led to another WPG PP goal to tie it at 3.

    WPG was controlling play pretty well at the beginning of the third, but another soft goal, this time by Ryan O’Reilly allowed the Blues to take a 4-3 lead. The rest of the game can pretty much be summed up with this: Jordan Binnington was incredible.

    2-0. Back to STL Sunday at 7:30 Eastern
