- Gabriel Landeskog and the Colorado Avalanche would end the New Jersey Devils four game unbeaten streak with a 5-3 victory. Landeskog would net his third career hat trick in his NHL career. Nathan MacKinnon would also register three assists in the contest to extend his season-opening point streak to seven contests (seven goals and four assists).

  Since McDavid entered the league in the 2015-16 season, he has 176 career assists, one behind Erik Karlsson. McDavid owns a career avergage of 0.82 assists per game and is tied with Sidney Crosby for the highest average in such a feat among active players with at least ten games played.

- Logan Couture and the San Jose Sharks went on to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 5-1. Couture recorded his third career hat trick, and the 59th in Sharks history.With this win, the Sharks have recorded five goals for the second time in the last four games.

In NHL action last night there were twelve contests.

- It was an eventful night for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. The quartet of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Morgan Rielly, and Mitch Marner all continued their record-setting start to the season. The Maple Leafs have scored at least five goals in four straight games. - Phil Kessel recorded his sixth career hat trick to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. This would be Kessel’s first hat trick with the Penguins. Kessel has scored at least 20 goals in the past ten seasons and is one of only five players currently playing in the NHL to achieve this feat.

There were no preseason contests yesterday.

Today is the first day of the regular season in the NHL and there are four contests taking place.
- The Washington Capitals will raise their Stanley Cup Championship banner tonight in a pre-game ceremony when they take on the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena. TXHT has the preview of the game here.
- The Montreal Canadiens take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, which will mark the official debut of John Tavares. Tavares joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent over the summer. For TXHT’s preview of this match-up, please check out Steve Gardiner’s game preview

- The Calgary Flames face off against the Vancouver Canucks. For the Canucks this marks the first season without Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who retired last season, since the 1999-2000 season.
- The Anaheim Ducks face off against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center. For the Sharks this will mark the official debut of Erik Karlsson, who joined the team after a trade

Top Questions Facing the Canucks:
1. Can the Canucks stay healthy this season?
Last season the Canucks became riddled with injuries and to key players to end last season. With an anemic roster to begin with, the Canucks cannot allow to go through a season with so many injuries. Especially to players like Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser, Sven Baertschi, Chris Tanev, and Eric Gudbranson who make up the majority of the offense and defense.

2. What is the identity of the Canucks now?

With future Hall of Famers Daniel and Henrik Sedin now retired, the Vancouver are faced with what is their most trying question to date. Who are they? A big part of this question lies on General Manager Jim Benning who last season faced criticism for the Canucks’ lack of direction as the team now transitions out of the Sedin era. Plus head coach Travis Green will feel the pressure this season to guide the Canucks toward meaningful games.
