  • The Blues need to hire Joel Quenneville

The Blues need to hire Joel Quenneville

Let me restate that for the Twitter generation: the #stlblues need to bring #QTOTHELOU.

Let me start be saying that I recognize having a knee-jerk reaction to the Blues’ lackluster start and calling for a new coach without digging deeper is not the way to run a successful organization, so let’s evaluate how current coach Mike Yeo has performed this season, then get to the merits of hiring Quenneville. The Blues stumbled out of the gate, winning just one of their first five games, but since then have performed semi-respectably, beating teams like Toronto and Vegas rather easily. Unfortunately, when they played the heavy-hitters of the Central, they came back down to earth, blowing a 3-1 third period lead to Winnipeg, and having one of their most embarrassing performances of recent memory in a 5-1 loss to Minnesota, being outshot 45-16. Is this all Mike Yeo’s fault? No. Has Mike Yeo done even one thing to make this team better? It does not seem like this.

Egregious infraction 1: the constant, and quite frankly baffling, use of Jay Bouwmeester. The Blues are in a precarious position with Robert Bortuzzo being injured and, up until recently, Carl Gunnarsson recovering from an ACL tear, so the Blues were forced into playing Bouwmeester. They were not, however, fired into playing him more than 19 minutes in 8 of the 11 games he has played in, or keeping him on the ice in critical late game situations. Would this be any different under Coach Q? We don’t really know, but looking at Brent Seabrook’s average time on ice, it has fallen about 2 minutes since 2015-2016. While he still gets about 20 minutes of ice time (according to hockey reference), the Blackhawks’ defense is much worse than the that of the Blues, and Seabrook is still capable of generating much more offense than Bouwmeester. If we say an n of 1 is significant (somewhere a statistician’s head just exploded), it stands to reason that Quenneville does not simply look at pedigree and contract value when determining whether to keeping playing an aging veteran exactly as he did in his prime.

Egregious infraction 2: inability to use young players properly. The Blues have a wealth of young players, including Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou – neither of which has been used well. Thomas, a highly-touted prospect, played the first five games, but was then benched for almost two weeks. Yeo’s rationale was that he was trying to find his confidence:

Nothing does more for a young player’s confidence than a benching 5 games into a 9-game trial. Within those first 5 games, that the Blues were losing all but 1, Thomas saw more than 10 minutes of ice time just twice. This does not help develop young players, and it does not help the current team win. Kyrou faired better under Yeo, slightly, but after not putting up many points in the first few games, he has been relegated to fewer than 10 minutes of ice time in each of his last three games (and has not played in the last 3). This type of player mismanagement makes me nostalgic for Mike Matheny, who once stated that coaches are not in the business of player development.

Now, would this change under Quenneville? That’s questionable. According to BlackhawkUp, one of Quenneville’s biggest critiques was that he would not trust younger players. However, the Blackhawks, at the time, were a dynasty in the making, with players like Toews and Kane (themselves fairly young), so it is understandable to trust these guys more. His development of Patrick Kane alone is enough to show how strong he is in the player development department.

This list can go on, but in the end, the Blues need to realize that Quenneville is an all-time great coach, while Yeo has not done anything in his career to prove he can ever reach that level. They are not playing well this year, an Q can help turn that around. It’s far from a given that a reunion is imminent, but the Blues would be foolish not to explore the possibility.

These are your news and notes for Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018.

There were four contests in the NHL yesterday…

      • The Washington Capitals took on the Vancouver Canucks and would go on to win the contest by a score of 5-2.John Carlson, Alex Ovechkin, and Nicklas Backstrom would all find the scoresheet and Backstrom would hit the 600 career assist milestone marker.

Carlson would register his fifth multi-point game on the season and the second game with at least three points. Carlson has started the season by becoming the 10th defenceman with five multi-point games in his first eight games on the season.

Alex Ovechkin also netted his 25th games where he registered at least four points in a contest as well as having his 123rd multi-goal game of his career and the third on the season.

In addition to the previously mentioned feat, Ovechkin also netted his 103rd game-winning goals which would be his 233rd power-play goal and moved him past Dino Ciccarelli for sole possession of ninth place on the all-time list for power-play goals.

TXHT has your recap of the contest between the Washington Capitals and Vancouver Canucks here.

      • The Colorado Avalanche trio of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Gabriel Landeskog all made the scoresheet once again, combining for the Avalanche’s first goal of the game in Colorado’s 4-1 rout of the Philadelphia Flyers.Colorado finished their road trip 3-0-1 and moved them to a record of 6-1-2 on the season.Rantanen and MacKinnon became the first teammates in franchise history to begin the season with point streaks of nine games.

Rantanen would also move into a first place tie with Auston Matthews for most points on the season with 16.

      • Carolina Hurricanes Sebastian Aho collected an assist when Micheal Ferland scored to extend Aho’s season-opening point streak to nice games and inching closer to the franchise record of 11 set by Ron Francis during the 1984-85 season.

Carolina would go on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 at Little Caesears Arena.

Justin Faulk opened the scoring for Carolina and eclipsed Glen Wesley for second place on the Hurricanes/Whalers list for career points by a defenceman.

    • The Winnipeg Jets went on to defeat the St. Louis Blues 5-4 in overtime.

Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele would score twice in the third period, as the Jets overcame two different deficits. Scheifele would register an assist on Jacob Trouba’s game-winner as Winnipeg improved to a record of 14-0-1 in regular season contests since March 2.

Monday’s contest marked the sixth occurrence in Thrashers/Jets history that the club has overcome multiple deficits in the third period and to win the contest. This has occurred on two other times since the club relocated to Winnipeg and the first occurrence since the 2016-2017 season.

There have been 16 contests this season when a team has comeback to win after having multiple deficits.

Yesterday’s results (home team in CAPS):

    • Colorado 4, PHILADELPHIA 1
    • Carolina 3, DETROIT 1
    • WINNIPEG 5, St. Louis 4 (OT)
    • Washington 5, VANCOUVER 2

    PP                 0/0                   0/1

    Toronto Maple Leafs:

    Analysis:

Leafs didn’t get any offence going and looked liked they were just floating around. Morgan Rielly was noticeably bad in that first period, trying to be too fancy rather then getting the offence up the ice.

    Need to Do:

Get the offence flowing. Stop Standing still.

    St. Louis Blues:

    Analysis:

Blues had a lot of defensive lapses and although Toronto was held to relatively few shots, there were a lot of high quality chances.

    Second Period:

Blues Penalty – 01:22 – Brayden Schenn, 2 mins for Interference

    Hits               15                     25

    PP                 0/2                    0/2

    Toronto Maple Leafs:

    Analysis:

Leafs looked sluggish and lack and offensive flair. This is looking to be a long game for Leafs are the Blues dominated the whole period. Once again the defence looking really bad, but give credit to the blues on being aggressive on the defence.

    Need to Do:

Get the puck out of the zone quick and up the ice. Prolonged puck control in the zone and big guns needs to show up.

    St. Louis Blues:

    Analysis:

Blues really clamped down defensively and did not make any unnecessary pinches in their offensive zone. This safe play led to lock down defense and some goal scoring

    Third Period:

Leafs Goal – 04:22– Morgan Rielly (4) from Mitch Marner (8)  and Jake Gardiner (6)

Leafs Penalty – 9:03 – Par Lindholm, 2 mins for Holding

Blues Penalty – 12:41 – Brayden Schenn, 2 mins for Tripping

Leafs Penalty – 14:34 – Andreas Johnsson, 2 mins for Holding the Stick

Blues Penalty – 16:55 – Jaden Schwartz, 2 mins for Hooking

Blues SHG EN Goal – 18:17– Ivan Barbashev (1) from Ryan O’Reilly (6)

    End of 3rd – TML – 1         STL – 4

    Shots              23                   25

    Faceoffs     28/60                32/60

    Hits               22                     33

    PP                 0/4                    0/4

    Toronto:

    Analysis:

Terrible game from the Leafs, no urgency to their game. Matthews was a ghost, along with Taveras and Marner until the 3rd period. Andersen held them close with some great saves. But in the end Jake Allen held the fort and blues played a perfect game.

    St. Louis:

    Analysis:

Jake Allen really stood on his head. While the blues played well defensively, Toronto really showed their firepower, controlling possession and getting some great scoring chances.

Ultimately this was the blues best game of the season against a top team. The key in the future will be keeping up this level of discipline and focus

    Next Up:

    Toronto (6-3-0 12pts) at Winnipeg (5-2-1 11pts)

      a. Jake Allen has been horrible all season, just take shots and see what happens.

      a. St. Louis plays a very aggressive puck possession that opens the point men up. They have some big shots from the point.
    3. Force the St.bLouis to take penalties.
      a. St. Louis penalty kill sits at an atrocious 78% on the year. Leafs need to take advantage of that

  • Habs Win Thriller over St.Louis Blues

Habs Win Thriller over St.Louis Blues

The Montreal Canadiens defeated the St. Louis Blues in a thrilling 3-2 win. Montreal started things off early with a quick goal by Max Domi 20 seconds into the game and ended things will a Brendan Gallagher goal to give the Habs a 3-2 lead with 11 seconds left in the game. Carey Price made 23 saves in the win. With the win, the Habs improve to 4-1-1 on the season.

    Things the Habs Did Well:

    – The Habs only gave up 25 shots (22 in the final 2 periods).
    – Jesperi Kotkaniemi drew 2 penalties
    – Tomas Tatar adds another assist for the Habs and continues to look great. My only complaint about the game is the Habs took way too many penalties. Both goals by St. Louis came with the man-advantage. Habs need to clean this up if they are going to be successful all year.

Victor Mete didn’t play tonight due to a minor hand injury but should be back in the line-up on Saturday night.

The Habs ride a three-game winning streak into Ottawa when they face the Senators on Saturday Night.

    Puck Drop:7:00

The Montreal Canadiens come into tonight riding a 2 game winning streak. The Habs will get their star goaltender Carey Price back tonight as he will get his first start since catching the flu. The Habs have not yet announced a line-up but there have been indications that their will be changes due to an illness going around the locker room.

    Keys to the game:
Carey Price will look to get back to his veznia self tonight after Niemi had two great starts in a row.

The Habs have found thier scorer in Tomas Tatar who has three goals and four assists for 7 points in 5 games.

The Defence has played okay but definitely needs to play stronger if that Habs want to be successful this season.
