    Today is Thursday, November 22nd, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were 14 games on the NHL schedule yesterday.

     

    NEW JERSEY 5, Montreal 2

    Kyle Palmieri became the eighth player in franchise history to have at least 12 goals in the first 20 team games of the season.

    Montreal Canadiens Max Domi has 11 consecutive games with at least a point, tied for fourth with two other players for the longest such streak as a member of the Canadiens.

     

    NY RANGERS 5, NY Islanders 0

     

    Filip Chytil became the seventh teenager to score a goal in at least five consecutive team games since the 2005-06 season last  night.

     

    Rangers G Alexandar Georgiev became the 16th different goalie to register a shutout for the franchise and the first in over 40 years against the Islanders when Doug Soetaert achieved the mark.

     

     

    PITTSBURGH 5, Dallas 1

     

    The Pittsburgh Penguins recorded points for the 15th straight time against Western Conference games last night against the Dallas Stars.

     

     

    DETROIT 3, Boston 2 (OT)

     

    Andreas Athanasiou would score twice in the contest, including the game-winner, to snap a seven game losing streak against the Boston Bruins in the win last night.

     

     

    TAMPA BAY 7, Florida 3

     

    Mike Hoffman would register another game in where he registers at least one point for the 17th consecutive contest, the fifth most for a player while a member of a new team.

     

     

    WASHINGTON 4, Chicago 2

     

    The Washington Capitals won their eighth consecutive game against the Chicago Blackhawks in home contests last night.

    Buffalo won their seventh consecutive win last night when they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers.

    CAROLINA 5, Toronto 2

    Carolina Hurricanes Justin Williams became the ninth player in NHL history to record at least 100 goals and a Stanley Cup with two different franchises in the win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night.

    John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs became the fifth player in franchise history and the first in the NHL’s Modern Era, since the 1943-44 season, to have at least 11 goals in the franchises first 11 road games last night.

    Matt Dumba would score his 10th goal of the season, the most for a defenceman through 22 games played of a season since the 1989-90 season.

     

    NASHVILLE 4, St. Louis 1

     

    In the three-goal win over the St. Louis Blues, the Nashville Predators would score two shorthanded goals, the sixth such occurrence.  It was also the first time that feat happened since March 13, 2018 against the Winnipeg Jets.

     

     

    Vegas 3, ARIZONA 2 (OT)

     

    Vegas Golden Knights Max Pacioretty registered his 11th overtime goal last night in the win over the Arizona Coyotes.  The 11th overtime goal is tied with three other players for the fourth most in the regular season since the 2008-09 season.

     


    CALGARY 6, Winnipeg 3

     

    The Calgary Flames became the fourth team in history to score five or more goals in the first period of consecutive games last night in the win over the Winnipeg Jets last night.

     


    ANAHEIM 4, Vancouver 3

     

    Anaheim Ducks G John Gibson won his 100th NHL career contest in a 25 saves performance.

    Gibson reached the 100 win mark faster than anyone else in the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim/Anaheim Ducks 25-year history of the franchise.

     


    Colorado 7, LOS ANGELES 3

     

    Colorado Avalanche G Seymon Varlamov would win his 200th NHL career game in the win over the Los Angeles Kings last night.

     

     

     

    Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen would register two assists to bring his total two 26 on the season, one behind Michel Goulet for the most in franchise history in the teams first 21 games.

     

     

    Today there are no games on the NHL schedule.

     

    NHL action will resume tomorrow with 15 games on the schedule, kicking off with the NHL Thanksgiving Showdown between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers at 1 p.m. ET.

     

     

     

    In NHL news…

     

    Newly inducted Hall of Famer Martin St. Louis was on hand in Tampa Bay for the ceremonial puck drop before the Tampa Bay Lightning took on the Florida Panthers last night.

     

    Nashville Predators Nick Bonino would play in his 500th NHL career game last night against the St. Louis Blues.

     

     

    Wednesday’s contest marked the second time in which 12 contests were won by the home teams.

    Detroit 3, NEW JERSEY 2 (OT)

    The Detroit Red Wings had another comeback in their contest against the New Jersey Devils yesterday afternoon.  The Red Wings came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the contest..

    Tampa Bay 6, PHILADELPHIA 5 (OT)

    Brayden Point had consecutive multi-goal games for the first time in his career and joined three other players in Tampa Bay Lightning history to have such a mark.

    Despite the loss in overtime, the Philadelphia Flyers would score four goals in the span of 6:04 to tie the game against the Lightning.  Philadelphia also became the ninth club to score four goals in the final 10 minutes of the contest to tie a game.

    Buffalo 3, MINNESOTA 2

    The Buffalo Sabres would go on to defeat the Minnesota Wild and with the win, the Sabres now have 26 points in their last 2mi0 contests and the second best 20 game start since the overtime point era started.

    OTTAWA 6, Pittsburgh 4

    Ottawa Senators Mark Stone had a game with two goals on four shots to help lift the Ottawa Senators past the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 6-4 win.

    Matt Duchene would also reach the 500 point mark with a two goal, one assist performance in the win as well.

    NY RANGERS 4, Florida 2

    New York Rangers Filip Chytil became the only teenager in the long-history of the NY Rangers to score in three straight games in the win over the Florida Panthers yesterday.

    Columbus 4, CAROLINA 1

    Columbus Blue Jackets Cam Atkinson registered the fifth career hat trick in Blue Jackets history with the rout of the Carolina Hurricanes last night.

    Montreal 3, VANCOUVER 2

    Elias Pettersson scored to be the third player in Vancouver Canucks history to register 11 goals in 16 games in the Canucks 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens yesterday.

    Montreal Canadiens Max Domi became the tenth player to have a nine game point scoring streak in their first season with the franchise.

    NASHVILLE 5, Los Angeles 3

    Los Angeles Kings Dion Phaneuf became the seventh player this season to play in his 1,00th NHL game in the Kings 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators last night.

     

    Boston 2, ARIZONA 1

    Boston Bruins Forward Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson would score his first career goal in the Bruins win over the Arizona Coyotes.

     

    CALGARY 4, Edmonton 2

    Elias Lindholm would score twice to help the Calgary Flames double up the Edmonton Oilers in a 4-2 win.


    SAN JOSE 4, St. Louis 0

    San jose Sharks D Erik Karlsson scored his first goal as a member of the franchise and helped shutout the St. Louis Blues 4-0.

    Joe Pavelski would also score in the contest and this would also be his fourth consecutive game with a goal.

     

    NWHL

     

    The lone NWHL contest of yesterday pitted the Boston Pride against the Buffalo Beauts.

     

    Boston’s Jillian Dempsey and Gigi Marvin would both score twice to give the Pride a big win over the Buffalo Beauts at Warrior Ice Arena last night.

     

    Dempsey scored her goals in the first period and then sealed the win for the Pride with her second goal of the contest with 6:40 left in the third period.

     

    The Boston Pride would play strong defensively in this contest, giving up Buffalo’s lone goal at the 7:40 mark in the second.  Hayley Scamurra would get the goal for Buffalo.

     

    Hayley Scamurra has four goals and four assists on the season.

     

    Pride G Katie Burt registered 25 saves on 26 shots and Beauts G Nicole Hensley would have 22 saves on 26 shot attempts.

     

    With the win, Boston is now in second place in the NWHL standings at 3-1 with the Minnesota Whitecaps at 6-0, who return to NWHL action in two weeks.

     

    The Buffalo Beauts now sit at 2-3-0 in the standings, good for third place.  The Metropolitan Riveters are at 1-5-0 and rounding out the standings is the winless Connecticut Whale at 0-3-0.

     

    The Boston Pride and Buffalo Beauts will face off again at 2:30pm today at Warrior Ice Arena.

    New Jersey’s Taylor Hall recorded his eighth career four-point performance in the Devils 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 5, Vancouver 2

     

    Mathew Barzal of the NY Islanders would register his 100th career point in his 101st game, becoming the sixth player to reach the 100 point mark among active NHL players.

     

     

    The Islanders would go on to rout the Vancouver Canucks 5-2

     

    Florida 2, PHILADELPHIA 1

    Florida’s Mike Hoffman would score to extend his point-scoring streak to an NHL-high 13 games on the season in the Florida Panthers one-goal win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night.

    Also in this contest, Panthers G Roberto Luongo became the fourth goaltender in League history to win four contests to be at the age of 39 or older.

    BUFFALO 2, Tampa Bay 1

    Buffalo has now won three in a row and seven out of their last 11 in the big win over the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Buffalo last night.

     

    DETROIT 6, Arizona 1

     

    Before the contest, the Detroit Red Wings held their pre-game skate in the Hockey Fights Cancer practice jerseys.

    Washington 5, MINNESOTA 2

    Tom Wilson would return to action, by registering his first goal of the season, and helped the defending champions take down the Minnesota Wild with a 5-2 win.

    EDMONTON 6, Montreal 2

    Edmonton’s Connor McDavid would have his 31st three-point contest, all assists, in Edmonton’s big win over the Canadiens.  Evgeny Malkin and Patrick Kane are the two players behind McDavid with 28 and 27, respectively.  This mark dates back to the 2015-16 NHL season.

    Despite Montreal Canadiens Max Domi registering a goal in the first six minutes in the contest to tie the game 1-1, it would not be enough as the Edmonton Oilers would go on to defeat Montreal 6-2.

    Domi’s goal would be his 10th of the season and the most of his career since the 2015-16 season.

     

    Toronto 5, LOS ANGELES 1

    The Toronto Maple Leafs began their West Coast trip with a big win over the Los Angeles Kings 5-1.

    San Jose Sharks Erik Karlsson would become the fifth player to record 400 career assists and achieved this mark in 646 games with the Sharks defeating the Nashville Predators 5-4.

    Joe Thornton of the Sharks would reach the 400 career goal mark and became the 11th player to have at least 400 goals and 1,000 assists in their careers.

    There were four contests last night…

     

    NY RANGERS 2, Vancouver 1

    There were two different Rangers players that scored last night that were under the age of 21 in New York’s contest against the Vancouver Canucks last night.

     

    Henrik Lunqvist moved into a tie for seventh place for wins by a goaltender with 437 in the win over Vancouver.

     

    CAROLINA 3, Chicago 2 (OT)

     

    Carolina so far this season has registered the most shots on goal in NHL history through the first 18 games of the season

     

    Chicago Blackhawks Alex DeBrincat played in his 100th NHL career game and scored his 37th career goal.

     

    Only six other Blackhawks have scored at least 37 goals in 100 NHL career games.

     

     

    Columbus 2, DALLAS 1

     

    The Columbus Blue Jackets to 7-0-0 against the Dallas Stars in the last seven games dating back to December 29th, 2015.

     

    ANAHEIM 2, Nashville 1 (SO)

     

    Anaheim Ducks G John Gibson earned his 99th career win with the Ducks shootout victory over the Nashville Predators last night.

    -Washington Capitals F Tom Wilson’s 20-game suspension for his illegal check to the head of St. Louis Blues F Oskar Sundqvist was reduced to 14 games by independent arbitrator Shyam Das earlier today.

    -The National Women’s Hockey League announced today that the 2019 NWHL All-Star Game will be held in Nashville, Tennessee.

    BUFFALO 4, Vancouver 3 (SO)

     

    The Buffalo Sabres overcame a multi-goal deficit in the last five minutes and would win the contest for the seventh time in franchise history and the first since March of 2010 in a 3-2 win in a shootout over the Montreal Canadiens.

     

    PHILADELPHIA 4, Chicago 0

    Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux became the ninth player to reach the 50 game mark while registering three points in a contest.

     

    Nashville 5, DALLAS 4 (OT)

     

    Mattais Ekholm netted the game-winner in the extra frame to give the Nashville Predators the 5-4 win over the Dallas Stars.

     

    Nashville is 8-0-0 on the road this season.  They are the third team in League history to win at least eight of their first road games to start the season.

     

    BOSTON 5, Toronto 1

    Boston Bruins David Pastrnak registered a hat trick for the second time this season against the Toronto Maple Leafs and joins six others for the same mark between the regular-season and the playoffs.

    Between three lead changes in this contest, the Montreal Canadiens would go on to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-4.  Tomas Tatar would net the game winner against his former club.

    Prior to the contest, the Montreal Canadiens honoured Max Pacioretty with a video tribute.

     

    Ottawa 6, TAMPA BAY 4

    Ottawa Senators Bobby Ryan has a three point performance, one goal and two assists, to lift the Senators over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

     

    FLORIDA 4, NY Islanders 2

     

    Florida Panthers Mike Hoffman extended his point-scoring streak to 11 games with a goal in the second period to help the Florida Panthers defeat the New York Islanders 4-2.

     

    PITTSBURGH 4, Arizona 0

     

    Pittsburgh Penguins G Casey DeSmith would net the shutout against the Arizona Coyotes with a 39 save performance and help the Penguins snap a five game slide.

     

    Detroit 4, CAROLINA 3 (SO)

     

    Detroit Red Wings G Johnathan Bernier made 45 saves and helped lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Carolina Hurricanes in a 4-3 shootout win.


    The Red Wings would also overcome a multi-goal deficit to win three consecutive games for the first time in the decorated franchise history of the Detroit Red Wings.

     

    NY Rangers 5, COLUMBUS 4 (SO)

     

    The New York Rangers have extended their point-streak in the standings to 6 games.

     

     

    Jimmy Vessey would net the winner in the shootout frame for the Rangers.

     

     

    Calgary 1, LOS ANGELES 0

     

    In the lone goal of the contest, Calgary’s Travis Hamonic would score his second goal of the season in the first three minutes of the contest.

    -The Florida Panthers honoured original team President, Mr. Torrey, last night with a video.  Mr. Torrey passed away back in May at the age of 83.

    -The Dallas Stars honoured Jason Spezza who played in his 1,000th NHL game.

    -The Montreal Canadiens held their annual Military Tribute night by wearing camouflage practice jerseys before their contest against the Vegas Golden Knights last night.

     

  • November 8th, 2018 — News and Notes

    Today is Thursday, November 8th, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were three contests in League action yesterday…

    WASHINGTON 2, Pittsburgh 1

     

    The Washington Capitals went on to defeat their arch-rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins last night.

    Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby would open up the scoring, and Washington’s Alex Ovechkin would score his 235th career power-play goal.  Ovechkin now has sole possession of seventh place in that category.

    Washington F T.J. Oshie would net the game-winner with 1:14 left in regulation.
    This would mark the ninth time in 47 contests in the regular-season in which Crosby and Ovechkin would find the net in the same contest.

    Nashville 4, COLORADO 1

     

    Nashville’s Colton Sissons recorded his second career regular-season hat-trick and helped lift the Predators back into first place in the NHL standings at 12-3-0 and 7-0-0 on the road.

    Sissons last hat-trick in the regular-season was during the 2016-17 season.

    ANAHEIM 3, Calgary 2

    Calgary would tie the game at 2 a piece with F Mark Jankowski’s goal in the third period but Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf would score the eventual game-winner 27 seconds later to give Anaheim the win.
    Calgary has been behind in three out of their last four games, and would win those contests.
    So far on the season, Getzlaf is averaging one point per game.

    Anaheim G Ryan Miller would win his 372nd game, two away from tying John Vanbiesbrouck for most all-time among U.S. born goalies.

    In NHL news…
    -The Boston Bruins unveiled their 2019 Winter Classic jerseys this morning.  They will take on the Chicago Blackhawks, who will unveil their Winter Classic jersey today at 5:30 p.m. CT, at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana on January 1st, 2019.

     

    -With Sissons hat-trick in last night, it marked the fourth consecutive day of game action in which a hat-trick was achieved.

    -In a bit of tragic news, the Minnesota Wild and the NHL announced that former Wild chairman Robert O. Naegele passed away due to complications from cancer.


    -Tonight when the Vancouver Canucks take on the Boston Bruins in Boston, Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson looks to be the fourth player since the 1920-21 season to register at least 11 goals through 11 career games.

    Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Tuesday, October 16th, 2018.

     

    There were four contests in the NHL yesterday.

    • The Montreal Canadiens scoring was hot in their 7-3 rout of the Detroit Red Wings, their sixth consecutive win over Detroit.Johnathan Drouin recorded his fourth multi-goal game of his career and his first as a member of the Canadiens, one of which occurred on his second career penalty shot attempt.

      Brendan Gallagher would also register a goal in the contest, his 11th goal in 18 career games versus Detroit. He has also scored seven times in the current six game win streak against the Red Wings.

      Tomas Plekanec would also play in his 1,000th career NHL game.

       

    • Plekanec also became the fourth player in Montreal history to record a goal while in his 1,000th NHL game.
    • In Toronto, the Toronto Maple Leafs are continuing to be an offensive machine with the line of Kasperi Kapanen, Auston Matthews, and Patrick Marleau all found the score sheet. The line combined for three goals and two assists in the Maple Leafs 7-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.Kapanen entered the season with ten points in 55 career games. Kapanen has register four goals and four assists thus far this season in just seven games.

      With Patrick Marleau also scoring his first goal of the season on a power-play, he now ranks seventh place in game wining goals, sitting five shy from Brendan Shanahan (109).

      Auston Matthews has been on fire thus far for the season and this game was no different. Matthews registered his seventh straight multi-point game and at least one point in the last 17 regular-season contests. By registering his seventh straight multi-point game in as many games, he joined a very special class.

    • Ottawa Seantors D Maxime Lajoie and F Brady Tkachuk scored two of Ottawa’s first four straight goals to lift the Senators to their second straight win and a record of 3-2-1 on the season in a 4-1 rout of the Dallas Stars.This game would also be noteworthy for Lajoie as no Senators defenceman has registered more points in their first six games with the franchise.
    • In the final contest of the evening, Nashville Predators Filip Forsberg scored the game-winner to give himself four goals and two assists as well as giving Nashville their third consecutive win on the season. Nashville, 5-1-0, has earned at least five wins in six games for the third time in franchise history and the second time in four seasons (5-1-0 in 2015-16). Nashville would defeat the Minnesota Wild 4-2.

    • The Arizona Coyotes announced that C Alex Galechenyuk has been cleared for contact but the return for on-ice action has not yet been determined.

    Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Friday, October 12th, 2018.

    In NHL action last night there were twelve contests.

    • The Washington Capitals were shutout by the New Jersey Devils. Kyle Palmieri scored twice to drub Washington 6-0 in the home opener for the Devils.For TXHT’s coverage for last night’s contest between Washington and New Jersey, please go here.
    • It was an eventful night for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. The quartet of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Morgan Rielly, and Mitch Marner all continued their record-setting start to the season. The Maple Leafs have scored at least five goals in four straight games. The quartet also is in the top four for league scoring with a combined 44 points.TXHT has your coverage of this contest as well. For coverage, please go here.
    • Phil Kessel recorded his sixth career hat trick to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. This would be Kessel’s first hat trick with the Penguins. Kessel has scored at least 20 goals in the past ten seasons and is one of only five players currently playing in the NHL to achieve this feat.

    Nashville Predators Austin Watson’s 27-game suspension for domestic violence was reduced by NHL/NHLPA neutral arbitator Shyam Das to 18 games last night.

    In relation to the reduced suspension, the NHL released the following statement today:

     

    The Vancouver Canucks announced yesterday that Henrik and Daniel Sedin will have their numbers retired next season.

     

    In a pre-game ceremony in Montreal, the Canadiens honoured the 1993 Stanley Cup championship team.

     

    The Florida Panthers announced that F Micheal Haley will be away from the team to take part in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

     

    In NWHL news, the NWHL returns to action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET when the Buffalo Beauts faceoff against the Connecticut Whale in the Twitter Game of the Week. At 7:30 p.m., the Boston Pride faceoff against the Metropolitan Riveters.

  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: October 1, 2018

     

    Here are your news and notes covering the NHL for Monday, October 1, 2018.

     

    There were four preseason contests that happened yesterday.

      • The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the San Jose Sharks with a 5-3 win at T-Mobile Arena. Tomas Nosek would score two of the Golden Knights three shorthanded goals. Max Pacioretty would also score the other shorthanded goal. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury registered 33 saves to give Golden Knights six wins out of seven on the preseason campaign. Erik Karlsson scored his first goal for the Sharks, which were 2-for-6 on the power-play. Sharks goalie Martin Jones recorded 27 saves in the contest.
      • The Nashville Predators defeated the Carolina Hurricanes with a 5-4 in overtime at PNC Arena. Nashville’s Ryan Johansen scored the GWG 21 seconds into the overtime frame, his second of the game. Hurricanes goalie Scott Darling recorded 20 saves before leaving the game in the second period with a lower-body injury. Petr Mrazek came in for relief for Carolina and recorded 10 saves. Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros registered 14 and 16 shots respectively for Nashville.
      • The Washington Capitals defeated the St. Louis Blues with a 5-2 victory at Capital One Arena. Washington Capitals forwards Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie scored goals 49 seconds apart early in the third period. Ovechkin scored his fourth goal of the preseason 38 seconds into the third period to give Washington a 2-1 lead and then Oshie scored at 1:27. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby recorded 21 saves. Tom Wilson was given a match penalty for his hit on Blues F Oskar Sundqvist at 5:22 in the second period. There is more to come on that later.
      • The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Dallas Stars in a 6-5 victory at American Airlines Center. Colorado’s Nathan Landeskog had two goals and assist in this contest. Mikko Rantanen registered one goal and two assists, Tyson Jost and Matt Calvert each had two assists, and Colorado goalie Seymon Varlamov recorded 32 saves.

    • Scott Hartnell announced his retirement today from the NHL. Hartnell played 17 seasons and registered 707 points in 1,249 games with three teams.

     

     

    • Shea Weber was announced as the 30th captain in Montreal Canadiens team history today. Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher were also announced as the alternate captains.

     

     

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs finalized their 23-man roster (13 forwards, eight defenceman and two goalies) today.

     

     

    • 19 years ago today, the Edmonton Oilers officially retired Wayne Gretzky’s number.

     

     

    • The New York Islanders unveiled their new third jerseys today. These thirds are identical to the last few third jerseys they have had over the past few seasons.

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Connor Carrick to the Dallas Stars for a conditional seventh-round draft pick which will turn into sixth rounder if Carrick plays at least 50 games.

     

     

    • Radim Vrbata announced his retirement today from the NHL.

     

     

    • The Montreal Canadiens acquired Brett Kulak from the Calgary Flames, who will report to the Laval Rocket of the AHL. In return, the Calgary Flames, will get Matt Taormina and Rinat Valiev.

     

     

    In the NWHL, the Connecticut Whale announced that they have signed Meeri Räisänen. Räisänen, a Finnish goalie, joins Russian national team goalie Maria Sorokina to give the Whale a strong and talented goaltending tandem.
