  • NHLPA File Appeal on Behalf of Tom Wilson

NHLPA File Appeal on Behalf of Tom Wilson

It was just announced today that the NHL Players Association has filed an appeal to the NHL in regards to Tom Wilson’s 20 game suspension for his Illegal Check to the Head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist.

While many still believe Wilson’s suspension is excessive, it was still given just cause by the NHL Department of Player Safety’s reasoning behind the length of the suspension. This is Wilson’s fourth suspension in less than 13 months and in 105 games. Plus this suspension is coming 16 games after being suspended for the same reason back in the second round of the postseason against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

While the appeal is a formality by the NHLPA, it will be interesting to see if Wilson’s suspension will be redudced by the League.

*Update* The appeal will be heard by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and a date has yet to be determined. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

You can watch TXHT Live every Wednesday at 8p EST on both Twitch and Facebook Live.

Capitals Goal – 3:30 – Jakub Vrana (1) from Nicklas Backstrom (4) and TJ Oshie (2)

Capitals Goal – 4:19 – Brooks Orpik (1) from unassisted

    Faceoffs      13/26           13/26

    Hits               10                   5

    PP                 0/1                 1/1

    Analysis:

This was an ok period for the Capitals. Pittsburgh scored early, but the Capitals response was great by getting two goals from Jakub Vrana and Brooks Orpik. Then on a really bad penalty by Matt Niskanen, the Penguins took advantage to tie the game at two a piece. But it wouldn’t stay tied long as Alex Ovechkin would tip in a Christian Djoos slap pass to take a 3-2 lead.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to do a much better job in their own zone as there were too many to close for comfort moments where they coughed up the puck too many times to the Penguins. Also the Capitals need to stay out of the penalty box, and not give the Penguins any opportunities to get back into this game.

    Second Period:

Penguins Goal – :30 – Kris Letang (1) from Sidney Crosby (1) and Brian Dumoulin (1)

    Capitals Goal – 3:54 – John Carlson (2) from Brett Connolly (1)

Penguins Penalty – 4:13 – Phil Kessel 2 minutes for Slashing

Capitals Penalty – 7:24 – Lars Eller 2 minutes for Hooking

Penguins Goal – 15:09 – Jake Guentzel (2) from Justin Schultz (2) and Patric Hornqvist (1)

Penguins Goal – 16:58 – Derick Brassard (1) from Dominik Simon (1) and Brian Dumoulin (2)

    End of 2nd – WAS – 4        PIT – 5

    Shots               26                  27

    Faceoffs       22/50             27/50

    Hits                 21                   14

    PP                   0/2                  1/2

    Analysis:

This was another ok period for the Capitals. They gave up a goal 30 seconds into the period but responded very well by retaking the lead, but after that it felt like the Penguins controlled the flow of the game more than the Capitals did. Also the Capitals not playing well in their own zone allowed the Penguins to score two goals later in the period to take a 5-4 lead into the intermission.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to keep on pushing. They need to make better break out passes and they need to play smarter in their own zone. Also the Capitals need to do a better job around their own net and prevent the Penguins from being able to set up in front of Braden Holtby and get tip in opportunities.

    https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty – :39 – Brett Connolly 2 minutes for Tripping

Penguins Goal – 2:45 – Evgeni Malkin (1) from Kris Letang (1) and Sidney Crosby (2)

Capitals Penalty – 3:53 – Madison Bowey 2 minutes for Hooking

Capitals Penalty – 8:40 – Jakub Vrana 2 minutes for Slashing

Capitals Goal – 13:01 – TJ Oshie (2) from unassisted

    Capitals Goal – 13:22 – TJ Oshie (3) from John Carlson (2)

    End of 3rd – WAS – 6         PIT – 6

    Shots              35                   39

    Faceoffs      32/68              36/68

    Hits               32                      21

    PP                 0/2                     1/5

    Overtime:

Capitals Penalty – :19 – Evgeny Kuznetsov 2 minutes for Hooking

Penguins PPG – 1:20 – Kris Letang (2) from Evgeni Malkin (2) and Phil Kessel (2)

    End of OT – WAS – 6        PIT – 7

    Shots             36                 41

    Faceoffs      33/70           37/70

    Hits               32                 21

    PP                 0/2                 2/6

    Analysis:

This was a goalie and coach’s nightmare, not just for the Capitals but for the Penguins as well. Putting up a combined 13 goals, this game looked more like an All Star game than a regular season game. The takeaways though from this game is that the Capitals still have a lot to work on. They were much better in the faceoff circle tonight, but their ability to make clean break outs and generate scoring opportunities were choked away by the Penguins pressure. The Capitals don’t play again until next Wednesday when they host the Vegas Golden Knights in a Stanley Cup Final rematch, so they will have ample time to work on their game.

  • News and Notes: October 4th, 2018

These are your news and notes covering the NHL for Thursday, October 4th, 2018.

There was one final preseason match yesterday and that pitted the Edmonton Oilers and Cologne Sharks (Kolner Haie) which Edmonton would go on to win 4-3 in overtime in Germany.

Last night was the kickoff for the 2018-19 NHL season and four games happened.

    • The Washington Capitals faced off against the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena. In a pregame ceremony, the Capitals raised their Stanley Cup champions and went on to route the Bruins in a 7-0 win. TXHT has your coverage from last night’s game here.
    • The Montreal Canadiens took on the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scoatiabank Arena. Toronto would go on to defeat Montreal in a 3-2 victory in overtime. Canadiens rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi would go on to register his frist NHL point with an assist. Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews would score the game-winner 1:01 into the overtime frame. For TXHT’s coverage of this contest, please check out Armand Kilsivitch’s article

  • Gameday Preview – 10/04/2018 – Washington Capitals v. Pittsburgh Penguins

Gameday Preview – 10/04/2018 – Washington Capitals v. Pittsburgh Penguins

    Time: 7p EST

    Station: NBC Sports Washington

    Preview:

After coming off a dominate performance against the Boston Bruins last night, the Washington Capitals head to Pittsburgh to take on the rival Penguins. This will be the first time these two teams will meet since that fateful day in May when Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the overtime winner in Game 6 to exorcise their playoff demons.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Ovechkin – Evgeny Kuznetsov – Brett Connolly

Jakub Vrana – Nicklas Backstrom – TJ Oshie

Andre Burakovsky – Lars Eller – Chandler Stephenson

Nathan Walker – Nic Dowd – Devante Smith-Pelly

    Christian Djoos – John Carlson

    Dmitry Orlov – Matt Niskanen

    Brooks Orpik – Madison Bowey

    Braden Holtby

    Pheonix Copley

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Get an early lead

    – Unlike last night when the Capitals raised their first ever Stanley Cup Banner, there are no distractions before the game, but this time they will be playing for the second consecutive day in a row and this game is on the road. The Capitals will want to score early to get the Pittsburgh crowd out of the game, and establish a rhythm like they did last night agaimst Boston.

    2. Fresh legs

    – Being how this will be the second day in a row that the Capitals will be playing, keeping their legs fresh will be key. Fortunately for the Capitals theynwere able to roll all four lines last night so that’ll help for when the Capitals if this game is a tighter contest.

    3. Faceoffs

    – Last night the Capitals were horrible in the faceoff circle which saw them win a four out of 22 faceoffs in the first period alone. The Capitals will have to do much better in the faceoff circle if they hope to establish a abetter possession game against the Penguins.

    Pittsburgh Penguins:

    Projected Lineup:

Jake Guentzel – Sidney Crosby – Patric Hornqvist

Carl Hagelin – Evgeni Malkin – Phil Kessel

Dominik Simon – Derrick Brassard – Bryan Rust

Matt Cullen – Riley Sheahan – Daniel Sprong

    Brian Dumoulin – Kris Letang

    Olli Maatta – Jack Johnson

    Jamie Oleksiak – Justin Schultz

    Matt Murray

    Tristan Jarry

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Get the jump on the Capitals

    – Just like last night and how the Capitals got a quick start to get their crowd into it after the Banner Ceremony, the Penguins will be looking to do the same in their Home Opener tonight. If the Penguins can get their crowd into with a quick goal, this could be a good start to the season for the Penguins.

    2. Matt Murray needs to play strong

    – During the playoffs Murray played good, but did not play at the level he did when he won back to back Stanley Cups. This season Murray will want to start strong and with a strong showing against the defending Stanley Cup Champions is a good way to build back his confidence.

  • The Precedent of Tom Wilson’s Suspension and What it Should Do

The Precedent of Tom Wilson’s Suspension and What it Should Do

As was announced earlier today, NHL Department of Player Safety suspended Tom Wilson 20 games for his Illegal Check to the Head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Lundqvist. Now for many, including me, find this to be a bit excessive, but lets take a deeper look at this and get a better understanding of Wilson’s 20 game suspension.

    [wpvideo G2gcK4JH]

Video Source : NHL Department of Player Safety

As you can see in this video, DoPS demonstrates how Wilson’s hit on Sundqvist is in fact illegal even Sundqvist was elgible to be hit on this play. Now it was noted in this video about Tom Wilson’s suspension history and per the CBA is a repeat offender, as well as the fact that with preseason and postseason included from last season Wilson has been one of most suspended player in a span of 105 games, which is the most in DoPS history. Also coming off the fact that this hit happened 16 games after his suspension for his Illegal Check to the Head of Zach Aston-Reese in last season’s playoffs.

So when you look at this suspension of 20 games for Tom Wilson, at first glance yes you would say it is excessive, but actually watching this video, and listening to the explanation given by DoPS, 20 games is the correct answer.

However, there is one huge question that needs to be answered, and it’s not about Tom Wilson, but about DoPS.

The NHL Department of Player Safety has a history of inconsistency when it comes to plays like this. Now while Wilson does have a history, this suspension also sets a precedent which should send a warning to the entire NHL that if you hit the head you get a lengthy suspension, but it won’t happen. We can have in tonight’s games a very similar play happen with the exact same hit, but will DoPS review it with the same scrutiny like they did with Wilson? Odds are probably not, but they need to be held to the same standard as they hold Wilson when gave him his hearing this morning.

It will be very interesting to see how DoPS will respond if in the very near future a very similar play happens. One would hope that DoPS, maybe not with the same length as Wilson’s as his was deserved, takes the next Illegal Check to the Head just as serious as they did with Wilson.

  • Montreal Canadiens Drop Home Opener

    Montreal Canadiens Drop Home Opener

Auston Matthew’s started off the scoring for the Toronto Maple Leafs on their first powerplay of the game in the first period. Then in the second period John Tavares gave the Leafs a 2-1 lead. After the Leafs 2nd goal the game, they were dominated by the Montreal Canadiens throughout the remainder of the second period. Andrew Shaw would score the game tying goal with seconds remaining in the second. The Leafs would answer when Matthew’s scored the game winner in overtime.

The Bright Side for the Canadiens:
Jesperi Kotkaniemi had a great NHL debut picking up an assist and looking pretty great in his first regular season game and was moving the puck.

Max Domi had 2 assists after coming back from a suspension.

The Canadiens powerplay looked very solid in the first game going 1 for 4.

Carey Price looks like hes back to his normal self and made a few great saves throughout the game. One key thing Price needs to work on is handling the puck behind the net.

  • Post-Game Report: Matthews steals the show as the Canadiens youngsters come out flying.

Post-Game Report: Matthews steals the show as the Canadiens youngsters come out flying.

Opening night expected both teams to come out flying, but only one team did the Montreal Canadiens and boy did they come out flying. The Leafs were flat almost all game with missed passes, defensive lapses and barely any zone time. But their stars bailed them out tonight. Lehkonen opened the scoring in the first for Canadiens at 9:34. The big powerplay went to work at Matthews tied it up at 12:57 of the first period.  Tavares potted his first goal as a Maple Leafs at 18:07 off of a beautiful individual deke and snipe. But the chippy Canadiens fought back and were rewarded with 14 seconds left in the 2nd period as Shaw scored on the powerplay beating Anderson with a beauty.  The 3rd period was dominated by the Canadiens and the Leafs were lucky to make it to overtime. If it wasn’t for Anderson in the 3rd this game would have been over.  But in OT Matthews came through again putting it top shelf on a very slick pass from Marleau.  Anderson made 34 saves and Price made 23 saves in a 3-2 Overtime win for the Maple Leafs in their home opener.

    Revisiting the Keys to win:

4 Keys to Winning in Montreal:

    1. Attack the Montreal defence.
      1. This failed to happen as the Habs took it to the Leafs almost all night. No possession time and barely any zone time.
    2. Bodies in front of Carey Price.
      1. Price showed his elite status tonight and came up big even with traffic.
    3. Speed Speed Speed
      1. Montreal dictated the pace all night and it showed in every facet of the game except the scoreboard
    4. Leafs defencemen need to limit the time spent in their own zone.
      1. The Leafs at times could barely get out of their zone. Hainsey was a victim all night.

Leafs needs to better come next game or else teams will begin to victimize them. Expect a different Leafs squad come Saturday.

    Analysis:

This was a very good first period for the Capitals for the most part. They scored two great goals in the two minutes and created some really good chances offensively. However the Capitals were horrendous in the faceoff circle winning only four out of 22 faceoffs the entire period. Also the Capitals new look penalty kill was very effective in their lone opportunity. Evgeny Kuznetsov on the PK adds a very scary threat with his speed and skill.

    https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to do a much better job in the faceoff circle. going 4 out of 22 is pathetic and the Capitals have too many talented centers to only win four faceoffs an entire period. Also the Capitals need to keep applying the pressure in the Bruins zone. The Capitals came out on fire and they need to keep it coming.

    Second Period:

Bruins Penalty – 3:01 – Brad Marchand 2 mins for Tripping

    Analysis:

Another very strong period for the Capitals. They are keeping their feet moving, generating scoring chances, and drawing penalties.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to keep on pushing. Also they need to do so much better in the faceoff circle, but overall they just need to keep playing their game and keep their feet moving.

    Analysis:

This was a dominating performance from start to finish for the Washington Capitals as they defeated the Boston Bruins 7-0. Evgeny Kuznetsov had two powerplay goals and Nicklas Backstrom had three assists, as well as Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson registering a goal and an assist each. The Capitals jumped the Bruins with two quick goals in the first two minutes of the game, and never looked back. They moved their feet, they generated scoring chances and drew penalties. The Capitals also were a dominate 4 for 6 on their powerplay, and when they had to go on the penalty kill were a perfect 2 for 2. Only key concern right now for the Capitals is that they were dominated in the faceoff circle by the Bruins and needs to be addressed before their matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow night in Pittsburgh.
