    Recaps from yesterday’s games:

-Buffalo went on to defeat Ottawa to close out a home-and-home series. Jason Pominville scored two of the Sabres nine goals to defeat Ottawa 9-2.

Before the contest, the Sabres would honour Pominville, who recently played in his 1,000th NHL game.  Pominville also extended his point-streak to seven.  His career-high is a 10 game point streak dating back to the 2007-08 season.

-The Toronto Maple Leafs went on to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins to move to 6-0-0 on the road this season and only trails the 7-0-0 start by the 1940-41 Maple Leafs.  The League record is a 10-0-0 start by the 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres team.

4 Keys to Winning against Pittsburgh:

    1. Be Aggresive
      1. Play like you did in Dallas, hard on the forecheck and aggressive in all zones.
    2. Faceoffs
      1. Need to start winning faceoffs again. Get the puck first and quick.
    3. John Tavares/Mitch Marner
      1. Needs to bring their A game from the beginning. They need someone to step up and it needs to be at least one of these two and I wouldn’t expect anything less.
    4. Limit Turnovers
      1. No crazy turnovers, way too much talent on this Penguins. They will make you pay for even the tiniest mistake

    Game Day Lineups:

    First Period:

Toronto Penalty – 04:46 – Patrick Marleau 2 minutes from Hooking

Toronto Goal – 09:34 – John Tavares (8) from Mitch Marner (13) and Ron Hainsey (4)

    End of 1st – TOR – 1       PIT – 0

    Shots              13                09

    Faceoffs         21/29          8/29

    Hits               9                  15

    PP                 0/0               0/1

    Analysis:

Leafs are winning faceoffs, and playing aggressive in all zone. Marner and Tavares look like they came ready to play.

    Need to Do:

Get more bodies in front of Murray really having a hard time tracking the puck.

    Second Period:

Toronto Goal – 00:44 – Patrick Marleau (3) from Kasperi Kapanen (5) and Nazem Kadri (5)

Toronto Penalty – 01:21 – Igor Ozhiganov 2 minutes for Tipping

Toronto Penalty – 03:22 – Nazem Kadri 2 minutes for High Sticking

Pittsburgh Penalty – 09:37 – Jamie Oleksiuk 2 minutes for Hooking

Toronto Goal – 11:49 – Morgan Rielly (5) from John Tavares (8) and Kasperi Kapanen (5)

Pittsburgh Penalty – 15:38 – Bryan Rust 2 minutes for Roughing

Toronto Goal – 00:44 – Patrick Marleau (3) from Kasperi Kapanen (5) and Nazem Kadri (5)

    End of 2nd – TOR – 3        PIT – 0

    Shots               30                 18

    Faceoffs          35/61            26/61

    Hits                 20                  28

    PP                   0/2                  0/3

    Analysis:

Leaf came out flying this period with solid defensive play and it turned into serious offence curtesy of some nifty play by Kasperi Kapanen. I said in the pre-game Tavares and Marner need to be the best players and that they are tonight.

    Need to Do:

Shut down, but don’t take your foot off the gas pedal.

    Third Period:

Toronto Penalty – 03:32 – Igor Ozhiganov 2 minutes for Holding

Pittsburgh Penalty – 14:42 – Carl Hagelin 2 minutes for Slashing

Toronto PP Goal – 15:33 – Morgan Rielly (6) from Mitch Marner (14) and Jake Gardiner (7)

Toronto Penalty – 19:11 – Connor Brown 2 minutes for Interference

Toronto SH Goal – 19:40 – Zach Hyman (1) Unassisted

    End of 3rd – TOR – 5         PIT – 0

    Shots              33                      31

    Faceoffs        45/80              35/80

    Hits               25                       46

    PP                 1/3                    0/5

     Analysis:

John Tavares, Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly silencing all the critics. Frederik Andersen shutting the door all made for a pretty convincing Leafs win. Tavares dominated in the faceoff circle, while Marner had the vision going at it’s finest. Also Hainsey looked like the shutdown guy he was last season.

    Preview:

The Washington Capitals begin a 5 game home stand where they look to turn things around and bring more consistency into their game as they host the Dallas Stars tonight. Dallas on the other hand will be looking for their third straight victory tonight.

    Dallas Stars:

    Projected Lineup:

Devin Shore — Tyler Seguin — Mattias Janmark

Jamie Benn — Jason Spezza — Valeri Nichushkin

Tyler Pitlick — Radek Faksa — Blake Comeau

Gemel Smith — Jason Dickinson — Brett Ritchie

    Esa Lindell — John Klingberg

    Miro Heiskanen — Roman Polak

    Dillon Heatherington — Julius Honka

    Ben Bishop

    Anton Khudobin

    Scratched: Justin Dowling

Injured: Alexander Radulov (lower body), Marc Methot (lower body), Martin Hanzal (back), Stephen Johns(concussion), Connor Carrick (foot)

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Clog up the neutral zone

Something that the Capitals have been having difficulty with lately has been their play through the neutral zone, and if Dallas can clog it up, it can foil and frustrate the Capitals.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Ovechkin — Evgeny Kuznetsov — Jakub Vrana

Andre Burakovsky — Nicklas Backstrom — T.J. Oshie

Dmitrij Jaskin — Lars Eller — Brett Connolly

Chandler Stephenson — Nick Dowd — Devante Smith-Pelly

    Dmitry Orlov — Matt Niskanen

    Michal Kempny — John Carlson

    Christian Djoos — Madison Bowey

    Braden Holtby

    Pheonix Copley

    Scratched: Nathan Walker, Aaron Ness

Injured: Brooks Orpik (lower body), Travis Boyd (leg)

    Suspended: Tom Wilson

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Feed the home energy

The Capitals are going to want to give their fans something to cheer about, and the fans want to see the Capitals succeed so the energy in Capital One Arena will be huge for the Capitals and their success against Dallas.

    2. Need to play a full 60 minutes

The Capitals could have easily defeated both Calgary and Montreal if they had played full 60 minute games, but when it really mattered they turtled in the 3rd period and allowed their opponents back into the game. They cannot do that anymore.

    First Period:

    Stars Goal – 10:51 – Jason Spezza (3) from Gemel Smith (1)

Stars Goal – 11:01 – Tyler Pitlick (2) from unassisted

Stars Penalty – 16:46 – Blake Comeau 2 minutes for Slashing

    End of 1st – DAL – 2       WAS – 0

    Shots              11                11

    Faceoffs         06                09

    Hits               11                  10

    PP                 0/0                 0/1

    Analysis:

This period could be viewed one of two ways. It could be viewed as very poor due to their pitiful play in their own zone, or an ok period because when they played in Dallas’ zone they did dominate the play and drew a penalty. However, the fact that they had 11 giveaways to Dallas’ 4 is very concerning.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to clean up the play in their own zone and fast. They cannot play in their own zone with the recklessness that they have. They need to slow the play down, and make smarter plays. Also if the Stars really force the issue, then the Capitals need to protect the puck better to prevent any takeaways.

    Second Period:

Capitals Goal – :38 – Nicklas Backstrom (3) from Andre Burakovsky (1) and Michal Kempny (2)

Capitals Penalty – 3:11 – Braden Holtby (Stephenson) 2 minutes for High Sticking

Capitals Penalty – 6:44 – TJ Oshie 2 minutes for Tripping

Stars Goal – 10:36 – Jamie Benn (6) from Jason Spezza (7) and Valerie Nichushkin (2)

    Capitals Goal – 12:31 – Brett Connolly (2) from Dmitrij Jaskin (2)

Stars Penalty – 18:41 – Jason Dickinson 2 minutes for Interference

    End of 2nd – DAL – 3        WAS – 2

    Shots               20                 24

    Faceoffs          17                 18

    Hits                 15                  18

    PP                   0/2                  0/1 *2nd in Progress

    Analysis:

A better period for the Capitals that saw them strike quickly 38 seconds into the period, however, another bad play in their own zone allowed Dallas to get their 2 goal lead back. A good response by the Capitals would allow them to get another one on the board and be down by only one going into the 3rd period.

Side Note – Both Madison Bowey and Dmitrij Jaskin have both looked very good so far in this game, and have been worthy of the extra playing time they’ve received so far.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to utilize their powerplays better and continue to move their feet and create chaos for the Stars in their own zone. Also the Capitals need to continue playing better in their own zone.

    Third Period:

Stars Penalty – 6:39 – Roman Polak 2 minutes for Interference

Capitals PPG – 7:57 – Evgeny Kuznetsov (6) from TJ Oshie (5) and Nicklas Backstrom (12)

    End of 3rd – DAL – 3         WAS – 3

    Shots              30                   31

    Faceoffs        25                    30

    Hits               19                     23

    PP                 0/2                    1/3

    OT:

Stars Penalty Shot – :59 – Tyler Seguin – Save

Stars Goal – 3:17 – Jason Dickenson (3) from unassisted

    End of OT – DAL – 4         WAS – 3

    Shots              36                   32

    Faceoffs        27                    31

    Hits               19                     25

    PP                 0/2                    1/3

    Analysis:

This was a tough game for the Capitals. The second half of the game was definitely better for them, but overall it was not very good. In overtime alone they were dominated by the Stars, and that is why they won, and the Capitals lost. The Capitals need to clean up the play in their own zone, and help out Braden Holtby as they have been putting him and Pheonix Copley in tough situations so far this season. The Capitals need to really get their game together as now they are going into a stretch where the challenges are going to be there and in their face.

    Next Up:

    Washington (5-4-3 13pts) v Edmonton (7-4-1 15pts)

    Dallas (8-5-0 16pts) @ Boston (7-3-2 16pts)

Today is Saturday, November 3rd, 2018 and these are your news and notes.

There were three contests in the NHL.

    Print

The first contest of the day was the conclusion of the NHL Global Series in Finland between the Winnipeg Jets and the Florida Panthers. Florida went on to win the contest 4-2.

Mike Hoffman of the Panthers scored one of three unanswered goals when Florida was down 2-1 to Winnipeg.

Panthers G Roberto Luongo made 32 saves in his return to the lineup to earn his first win on the season and the 472nd of his career. He is 12 games away from tying Ed Belfour for third place all time on the regular season wins list.

Hoffman extended his point streak to nine games, a career-high.

-The Vancouver Canucks defeated the Colorado Avalanche 7-6 in overtime.

Elias Pettersson had a great game scoring two goals and had three assists for a five point game.

Pettersson is the 16th player in history to score at least 9 goals in his first nine career games.

-The Arizona Coyotes went on to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime.

Coyotes Brad Richardson scored his League-leading third shorthanded goal of the season and Michael Grabner, 77 seconds into overtime, would score the game-winner.

With this win, Arizona has won five consecutive games for the first time since the 2013-14 season.

The Coyotes have netted seven shorthanded goals thus far on the season and at least one in the last four games.

  • Rating Toronto after 13 games

    Rating Toronto after 13 games

We’ve discussed the identity of the Toronto Maple Leafs and what we can expect on a regular basis from them. Today we will do some in-depth analysis on each Leaf player from the goaltending right up to the 1st line players, a grade will be given and a explanation as to why that grade is given. Below will be a grading system so that everyone reading can understand in a sense as to what the player is being graded on.

    Grading System:

10 – Overachievement of goals, and played extremely better then peers
9 – Achieved goals and played at a higher level then peers
8 – Achieved goals, while playing at the same level as peers
7 – Achieved most goals, while playing at same level as peers
6 – Achieved 80% of goals, while playing at a level slightly below peers
5 – Achieved 50% of goals, while playing at a level 50% below peers
4 – Achieved 40% of goals, while playing at a level 40% below peers
3 – Did not achieve majority of goals, while being in and out of the lineup
2 – Did not achieve majority of goals, while being a healthy scratch 90% of the time
    1 – Did not play

    Goaltenders:

Frederik Andersen: 7 – Frederik Andersen has always been a shaky starter in October, he really worked hard in the off-season to hopefully change that. Andersen started off the season with a solid 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens, where he made 34 saves in a very convincing opening night win. Things then kind went south. Andersen in his next 3 starts gave up 3, 4 and 3 goals respectively, which really started to take a toll on his Goals Against Average. Andersen then had a solid outing against Washington only giving up 2, then superb start against Pittsburgh only giving up 1 goal on 38 shots and back to 3 against St. Louis and then a superb outing against Winnipeg on Wednesday. So far inconsistency has gotten the best of Andersen but he looking like he is turning a corner.

Garrett Sparks – 5 – Garrett Sparks is a hard one to rate, he’s only made 2 NHL starts both he won. First game his team scored a touchdown against Chicago and he looked shaky to say the least. But the 2nd against Los Angeles he looked like a superstar only allowing one goal and making 33 saves. Sparks needs to work on his game at the NHL level, it’s one thing being AHL goalie of the year and being backup and eventually a starter in the NHL.

    Defence:

Igor Ozhiganov – 6 – The majority Ozhiganov’s goals were set with the learning curve of playing a North American style of hockey. But Ozhiganov hasn’t looked out of place except for one game. Solid defensive game with a nice outlet pass and a bomb of a shot. We haven’t seen the bomb as much but Ozhiganov doesn’t get much offensive zone time. I would expect to see this number go up as he continues to grow.

Travis Dermott – 6 – Dermott brings a solid two-way game. Although this year he hasn’t been given much of an opportunity to use the offensive game. Very little offensive zone time and rarely powerplay time has seen Dermott’s ability offensively diminish. But expect this number to go up as the season goes on.

Martin Marincin – 2 – Marcincin brings what he always has a good stick and reach. But his skating is something to be laughed at and decision making abilities are less then 0. Expect to more of Justin Holl throughout the season.

Justin Holl – 2 – The rating is not Holl’s fault. He has not been given a chance to play and has been the odd man out of the rotation that was happening between Marincin and Ozhiganov at the beginning of the season. Expectations are Holl will get his chance if he is patience.

Nikita Zaitsev – 6.5 – He’s been much better then last season, where turnovers and lack of defensive coverage were his demise. This season he come out looking more like his rookie season in Toronto. But turnovers are still a damper to him and his defensive partner Jake Gardiner.

Ron Hainsey – 5 – Hainsey has struggled defensively this season although the last few games he has looked like he is turning a corner. Turnovers in October/November seemed to have become a thing for him, whereas usually he is a sturdy defencemen. Only 2 ways to go for Hainsey either he’s just in a rough patch and it will turn around or age has finally caught up to him.

Jake Gardiner – 6 – Gardiner has looked basically the same as any other year except with the newly formed powerplay he is getting less opportunities in the offensive zone. The last few games Gardiner has taken it upon himself to create scoring chances, which can be a great thing or totally disastrous. Look for Gardiner to begin to revamp his game to create more 5 on 5 opportunities for himself.

Morgan Rielly – 9 – Rielly is finally living up to the bill of the 2-way defenceman they drafted. Still young so it was never really a worry but Rielly has really vamped things up this season, especially offensively. But his defensive game is reminiscent of Duncan Keith, good spacing, great stick and a nice box out to go along with a fantastic skating ability. 16 points in 13 games is making Rielly a real stud this season, expect more.

    Forwards:

Andreas Johnsson – 3 – Johnsson was a very strong player last year in the AHL and even in his callup to Toronto late in the season. But this season he is struggling to find his groove. Last season averaged 2 shots a game this season not even one, he hasn’t been using his speed or deceptiveness. Don’t expect Johnsson to stay this way all season, he’s dynamic expect him to find it. Tonight was the first step back to it.

Tyler Ennis – 3 – Ennis had a strong pre-season and then Kasperi Kapanen took his job, because he wasn’t performing with Matthews. He needs to use his speed to be effective and go to the corners. A 4th line with Ennis playing well could be a very good 4th line.

Frederik Gauthier – 4 – Gauthier isn’t expected to score very much, but he is expected to win draws and be a thorn in the other teams side. He’s been in and out of the lineup. More of a defensive specialist.

Josh Leivo – 4 – Leivo is a very disappointing player for me. He has such talent but can’t seem to bring it together all at one time at the NHL level. Big shot but can’t hit the net. He’s been put in all the right situations to succeed. Been kind of a let down.

Connor Brown – 4 – Brown has really underperformed so far this season with only a Empty Net goal to his name. Brown needs to play his game in the corners with his speed. Let his ability do the work. Brown will come around and find some scoring touch that the Leafs desperately from their bottom 6.

Par Lindholm – 5 – Lindholm was a great find for the Leafs overseas, he was brought over for his faceoff ability and his defensive game. The Leafs need a little offence out of him for sure, but he is learning the North American game so some slack is cut.

Patrick Marleau – 5 – Marleau has had an underwhelming start to his season scoring only his 2nd goal of the year last night in Dallas. Both goals coming on the man advantage. Marleau is being looked at as a 2nd option right now on the powerplay but with Matthews out will get more looks. Expect Marleau to easily break out of this slump and hit somewhere between 20-30 goals again this season.

Zach Hyman – 7 – People will laugh at this rating because they will say Hyman only has 6 assists on the season. How in the world is he rated higher than Patrick Marleau amongst others. Well, let me explain. Hyman does all the little things that don’t show up on the score sheet such as all the corner work, net presence, blocks shots, penalty kills on top of being on pace for 38 points. Hyman comes as advertised each game, works his tail off every game. Respect is given where respect is due and that’s one of those situations.

Kasperi Kapanen – 8 – Kapanen since being drafted by the Penguins in the 1st round 22nd in the same draft as fellow Maple Leaf William Nylander, has had to fight his way to the NHL. Penguins didn’t deem him worthy of a roster spot but remained patient with Kapanen, until they made him apart of the Phil Kessel deal. Kapanen has been in and out of the Leafs roster for the last 2 seasons now but made an impact 2 years ago against Washington in the playoffs and again last season. This season he was a shoe in for a roster spot, especially considering the Leafs cap crunch and the Nylander hold out. Kapanen started on the 4th line with Andreas Johnsson and Par Lindholm, but quickly jumped up to the top line to play with Auston Matthews and Patrick Marleau. Kapanen’s speed, physicality and willingness to go to the corners this season has made him a real star so far, scoring 6 goals and 4 assists in 13 games. Babcock is beginning to trust the kid more and he will be a mainstay in this lineup. Expect him to continue to score maybe not at the pace he is now but Kapanen brings a lot to the Leafs.

Mitch Marner – 10 – Marner, there is so much to say about this kid and not enough time to say it. Let me break it down into 3 things.

    1. Hockey IQ is off the charts! If you not familiar with what that means a very simple definition would be, the ability to read a play before it happens and the ability to determine the how the opposing players will react to a certain situation. All this is done in a split second and then to be able to react to that accordingly.
    2. On-Ice Vision is as if he has superpowers. Watch as Marner takes that puck takes a step forward knowing it will open up a seam and boom over to Tavares and in the net or watch as he knows that they are expecting him to pass and he takes advantage of that and boom in net. Finally watch his ability to spot any player coming from anywhere and get to their stick through tons of traffic.
    3. Speed combined with stickhandling is scary. Most analysts call this have the puck on a string, it just seems to stay on his stick and never leave until he wants it too.

All this to say Marner has come out flying, scoring 16 points in 13 games. This is what your going to be getting for the next however many years. This kid is a stud. Oh and by the way he LOVES PLAYING IN TORONTO.

John Tavares – 9 – Tavares has been everything advertised, good faceoff guy and 2-way player who really has a knack to score. 14 points in 13 games. My reasoning for putting him at 9 is he seems to disappear at times. But Tavares is on pace again for heavy offensive numbers, Leafs look scary good. Just like Tavares has so far.

Auston Matthews – 10 – I wish there was an 11 or 12 on this scale. Auston Matthews revamped his shooting and boy whatever he did it’s been dead on. Unfortunately being out for a month will hurt his MVP chances (It’s early, I know). But 16 points in 11 games before the injury. Let me tell you 3 things that have made Matthews so successful this season.

    1. Those hands are filthy. Another one of those guys who has the puck on a string, he makes the puck do whatever he wants. Watch him control the game just by cradling the puck, it’s quite magical.
    2. Laser shot. Whatever Matthews did over the offseason, it worked wonders he puts the puck wherever he wants to. It’s almost as if he tells it to go and it goes there.
    3. Defensive ability. When you play against Matthews you better be ready for a 200 foot press. Matthews is relentless backchecker, especially if he is the one who loses the puck.
    4. Not afraid to go to the dirty areas. Matthews does what he got to do to score, sacrificing his whole body and it has worked. The shoulder injury is a freak injury. Just hit the wrong spot.

Nazem Kadri – 5 – Kadri started off the season very slow, my thoughts are he was trying to find his identity on the team again. 1st powerplay unit, penalty killing and a 3rd line center role. But he embraced it and has become good at agitating other teams. Hard on the forecheck and gritty. Now after 13 games he’s gotten 7 points and with Matthews injury an increased role. Expect more from Kadri and a better rating at the half way point.

These are my rating for the Maple Leafs 13 games into the season. Will re-evaluate again at the half way point.

    Recaps:

-In the contest between the Florida Panthers and the Winnipeg Jets in the first NHL Global Series games in Finland, the Jets would defeat the Panthers 4-2.

Jets F Patrik Laine recorded the first NHL career hat-trick in a regular-season contest outside of North America to outduel fellow countryman, Aleksander Barkov.

Entering this contest, Laine only had three goals in 12 games. Laine scored two game-tying goals before he finished off the hat trick, the fifth of his NHL career.

  • Full Gameday Preview and Coverage – 11/1/2018 – Washington Capitals v. Montreal Canadiens

    Washington Capitals (5-3-2 12pts) v. Montreal Canadiens (6-3-2 14pts)

    Time: 730p EST

    Station: NBC Sports Washington

    Preview:

In a battle of two 4th place teams in their respective divisions, the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens are going to be looking to improve their standing within their divisions. The Capitals are coming off two lackluster games against the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, while the Canadiens will be looking for their 6th win in nine games.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Ovechkin — Evgeny Kuznetsov — Jakub Vrana

Andre Burakovsky — Nicklas Backstrom — T.J. Oshie

Chandler Stephenson — Lars Eller — Brett Connolly

Dmitrij Jaskin — Nic Dowd — Devante Smith-Pelly

    Dmitry Orlov — Matt Niskanen

    Michal Kempny — John Carlson

    Christian Djoos — Madison Bowey

    Braden Holtby

    Pheonix Copley

    Scratched: Nathan Walker, Aaron Ness

Injured: Brooks Orpik (lower body), Travis Boyd (leg)

    Suspended: Tom Wilson

    Keys to the Game (Michael):

    1. Play a full 60 minutes

The Capitals need to come into this game and play a full 60 minutes. They barely showed up in Edmonton, and they coasted through their game in Calgary, and it wasn’t acceptable. The Capitals need to play a full 60 minutes if they hope to win tonight in Montreal.

    2. Keep your feet moving

The Capitals are going to need to keep their feet moving against the Canadiens. The Canadiens are much quicker team and the Capitals will need to utilize their speed to help neutralize Montreal’s.

    Montreal Canadiens:

    Projected Lineup:

Tomas Tatar — Phillip Danault — Brendan Gallagher

Jonathan Drouin — Max Domi — Charles Hudon

Artturi Lehkonen — Jesperi Kotkaniemi — Joel Armia

Nicolas Deslauriers — Matthew Peca — Andrew Shaw

    Jordie Benn — Jeff Petry

    Mike Reilly — Noah Juulsen

    Xavier Ouellet — Victor Mete

    Carey Price

    Antti Niemi

    Scratched: Karl Alzner

Injured: Paul Byron (lower body), Shea Weber (knee), David Schlemko (knee), Tomas Plekanec (back)

    Keys to the Game (Armand):

    1. Don’t give the Caps chances with the man advantage.
    2. Carey Price needs to play a solid game as both Braden Holtby and Price are two of the best netminders in the league.
    3. Fast start Montreal needs to get on the board early to gain momentum.
    4. Lastly No Stupid Turnovers Montreal has made too many boneheaded moves this season.

    First Period:

    Canadiens Goal – 2:28 – Jesperi Kotkaniemi (1) from Joel Armia (3)

Capitals Goal – 6:16 – Lars Eller (2) from Matt Niskanen (4) and Chandler Stephenson (2)

Canadiens Penalty – 8:23 – Brendan Gallagher 2 minutes for Roughing

Capitals Penalty – 8:23 – Evgeny Kuznetsov 2 minutes for Roughing

    End of 1st – WAS – 1       MON – 1

    Shots              13                18

    Faceoffs         06                06

    Hits               12                  10

    PP                 0/0                 0/0

    Analysis:

Capitals (Michael) – This was an ok period for the Capitals. Definitely did not start this game well as they  looked overwhelmed by Montreal’s speed, and at one point was being out shot 10-3. However, with Braden Holtby’s stellar play and a solid shift by the 3rd line which resulted in a goal, and some really solid 4 on 4 play, the Capitals were able to get themselves back into this game.

Canadiens (Armand) – Habs played a great period. Great on the forecheck. Getting tons of shots on Holtby.

    Need to Do:

Capitals (Michael) – The Capitals need to start the next two periods much better than they started the first period. Also the Capitals need to continue to keep forcing the play in the Canadiens zone and clean up their own play in the front of Holtby and not let the Canadiens cut through the middle.

Canadiens (Armand) – From what I can see the Habs just need to keep doing what they did in the first.

    Second Period:

    Canadiens Goal – :32 – Brendan Gallagher (8) from Tomas Tatar (7)

Canadiens Goal – 3:06 – Brendan Gallagher (9) from Tomas Tatar (8) and Phillip Danault (5)

Capitals Goal – 6:49 – Alex Ovechkin (9) from Evgeny Kuznetsov (11) and Jakub Vrana (3)

    Capitals Goal – 7:59 – Lars Eller (3) from Brett Connolly (7)

Capitals Goal – 12:53 – Alex Ovechkin (10) from Dmitry Orlov (2) and Matt Niskanen (5)

Capitals Penalty – 16:16 – Evgeny Kuznetsov 2 minutes for Holding

Capitals Penalty – 19:57 – Lars Eller 2 minutes for Interfernce

    End of 2nd – WAS – 4        MON – 3

    Shots               26                 27

    Faceoffs          18                 13

    Hits                 16                  21

    PP                   0/0                  0/1 *2nd in progress

    Analysis:

Capitals (Michael) – This period did not start well for the Capitals, but they finished it strong. The Capitals scored 3 unanswered goals after Brendan Gallagher scored back to back goals in the first 3 minutes of the period, and forced the play in the Canadiens zone.

Canadiens (Armand) – Turnovers have killed the Habs Especially on the short handed opportunity Washington had.

    Need to Do:

Capitals (Michael) – The Capitals need to play a strong 20 minutes to close out the Canadiens. They need to kill off this late penalty by Lars Eller and use that momentum to take it to the Canadiens.

Canadiens (Armand) – Habs need to come out strong after a poor period. Powerplay to start the period needs to be strong.

    Third Period:

Canadiens Penalty – 13:01 – Charles Hudon 2 minutes for Tripping

Canadiens Goal –  – Jesperi Kotkaniemi (2) from Artturi Lehkonen (7) and Victor Mete (1)

    Canadiens Goal – 19:38 – Max Domi (6) from Mike Rielly (3)

    Canadiens ENG – 19:40 – Joel Armia (3) from Phillip Danault (6)

    End of 3rd – WAS – 4         MON – 6

    Shots              31                   44

    Faceoffs        35                    25

    Hits               25                     32

    PP                 0/1                    0/2

    Analysis:

Capitals (Michael) – What should have been a win for the Capitals became nothing more but a blown opportunity for them. All they needed to do was play a full 20 minutes and truly pressure the Canadiens in their own zone and and keep the play there, but instead this was a period dominated by the Canadiens and they were able to take this game from the Capitals in the final 3 minutes of this game including 2 goals in two seconds to seal the deal for the Canadiens. One of the biggest bright spots was the play of Braden Holtby, and his stellar play in net kept this game a lot closer than it would have seemed to be. The Capitals were out shot 17-5 in the third period alone.

Canadiens (Armand) – Habs blow a 3-1 lead but like the time they played Washington in the playoffs the Habs storm back to get the win. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Brendan Gallagher each pick up two goals as Max Domi had a goal that would be the decider. Carey Price looked a little shaky at times but made some key saves late in the game to keep the Habs in the game.

    Next Up:

    Washington (5-4-2 12pts) v. Dallas (7-5-0 14pts)

    Montreal (7-3-2 16pts) v, Tampa Bay (8-3-1 19pts)

    Time: Thursday, Novemeber 1st, 2018

    Toronto: 8-4-0 for 16 points

    Dallas: 6-5-0 for 14 points

The Toronto Maple Leafs play their second game of the season against the Dallas Stars. Game 1 ended in the Leafs walking away victorious 7-4 in Dallas. But the Leafs have had their troubles on home ice this year going 3-4. This also marks the 2nd game without Auston Matthews, expect the Leafs to come out with a little more fire than they did against Calgary. Dallas is coming off a 4 -1 over the Montreal Canadiens and seemingly firing on all cylinders.

    Top Scorers/Goalie Matchup
    Auston Matthews – 16 points (10 goals 6 assists) 53% on Face-off
    Mitch Marner – 126 points (4 goals 12 assists)
    Morgan Rielly – 15 points (4 goals 11 assists)
    John Tavares – 13 points (7 goals 6 assists) 49% on face-offs

Tyler Seguin –12 points (3 goals 9 assists) 59.6% faceoffs
John Klingberg– 11 points (5 goal 6 assists)
Alex Radulov– 11 points (5 goal 6 assist)
Jamie Benn– 9 points (4 goal 5 assists)

Tyler Ennis – Pars Lindholm – Connor Brown

Andreas Johnsson – Frederik Gauthier – Josh Leivo
    Morgan Rielly – Ron Hainsey

    Jake Gardiner – Nikita Zaitsev

    Travis Dermott – Igor Ozhiganov
    Frederik Andersen

    Garrett Sparks
Scratched: Justin Holl & Martin Marincin

Injuries: Nathan Horton (Back), Auston Matthews (Shoulder)

    Suspension: None

    Dallas:

Justin Dowling – Tyler Seguin – Alexander Radulov

Jamie Benn – Jason Spezza– Mattias Janmark

Valeri Nichuskin– Radek Faksa – Gemel Smith

Devin Shore – Jason Dickinson – Blake Comeau
    Esa Lindell –John Klingberg

    Marc Methot – Miro Heiskanen

    Julius Honka – Roman Polak
    Anton Khudobin

    Ben Bishop
    Scratched: Connor Carrick

    Injuries: Martin Hanzal, Stephen Johns

    Suspension: None

4 Keys to Winning against Dallas:

    1. Stay Out of the Box
      1. The Stars own one of the top power-plays in the league and the Leafs penalty kill has not been good.
    2. Puck Possession
      1. Puck possession is going to be something that the Leafs need to have during this game, don’t get into an offensive tug of war with Dallas.
    3. Nazem Kadri
      1. With the absence of Matthews, Kadri will be called upon to step up his game more offensively. Shouldn’t be an issue considering he is a former 30 goal scorer.
    4. Limit Turnovers
      1. No crazy turnovers, way too much talent on this Dallas roster. They will make you pay.

    Game Day Lineups:

    First Period:

Dallas Penalty – 07:28 – Brett Ritchie 2 minutes from Holding

    End of 1st – DAL – 0       TOR – 0

    Shots              07                10

    Faceoffs         12/16          4/16

    Hits               17                  7

    PP                 0/0               0/1

    Analysis:

Leafs came ready to be aggressive against the Stars. Pressing the Stars defence and forward even in the neutral zone. Not allowing the Stars much offensive zone time but forcing Dallas to take shots from the outside. All players are back checking hard, and clogging up the neutral zone. The 3rd and 4th lines are playing like they have something to prove and Travis Dermott is making sure he doesn’t give Babcock any reasons to take him out of the lineup again.

    Need to Do:

Continue the pressure and get more bodies in front of the net.

    Second Period:

Toronto Penalty – 09:53 – Par Lindholm 2 minutes for Holding

Dallas Goal – 11:55 – Jamie Benn (5) from Tyler Seguin (10) and John Klingberg (7)

Toronto Penalty – 12:41 – Justin Holl 2 minutes for Holding

Dallas Penalty – 16:02 – Marc Methot 2 minutes for Tripping

    End of 2nd – DAL – 1        TOR – 0

    Shots               15                 16

    Faceoffs          21/31            10/31

    Hits                 28                  13

    PP                   0/2                  0/2

    Analysis:

Leafs took the foot off the gas pedal and look to be really struggling to find any offence. Scoring needs to come from somewhere question is who will step up.

    Need to Do:

Leafs need to put together a full period. Attack and Attack!

    Third Period:

Dallas Penalty – 01:12 – Brett Ritchie 2 minutes for Holding

Dallas Goal – 04:43 – Devin Shore (3) from Mattias Janmark (1) and Tyler Seguin (11)

Dallas Penalty – 05:30 – Jason Dickinson 2 minutes for Tripping

Dallas Penalty – 16:29 – Brett Ritchie 2 minutes for Tripping

Toronto PPG Goal – 16:51 – Patrick Marleau (2) from Morgan Rielly (12) and John Tavares (7)

    End of 3rd – DAL – 2         TOR – 1

    Shots              18                   31

    Faceoffs        34                    18

    Hits               34/54             20/54

    PP                 0/2                    1/5

    Analysis:

This game should have been a win for the Leafs, as they were the much better team for the majority of the game but a few posts and the realization of how much even the players relied on Auston Matthews for goals was at the forefront. Johnsson, Lindholm, Brown, Kapanen looked like they were there to play with speed and aggressiveness, which is a first all season for some of those guys. Take this as a building block for them to get the We Need Matthews to win games mentality out of their brain. Much better showing then against Calgary.

    Next Up:
