  • Women’s Hockey News – 200 Women to Boycott for a Viable Long Term Hockey League

Women’s Hockey News – 200 Women to Boycott for a Viable Long Term Hockey League

A little before noon today over 200 professional female hockey players announced that they will be boycotting this upcoming season until the get a “Long-Term Viable” Professional Women’s Hockey League.

    IMG_20190502_112527

In the statement above that was released by around 200 professional female hockey players it states that it is time to create a sustainable league for Women’s hockey that will give them the abilities to have health insurance, have the ability to train adequately for games, and most importantly, making a livable wage playing hockey.

A couple hours after the #ForTheGame announcement was made, NWHL put out the following statement:

    Screenshot_20190502-134630_Yahoo Mail

In this statement from the NWHL, the biggest takeaway is that they have all intentions moving forward with the 2019-20 season, and that they will be offering increased salaries, and a 50-50 in revenue from sponsorships and media rights deals after long constructive and positive conversations with the NWHL Player’s Association over the past month.

In regards to the NWHLPA, Director Anya Battaglino had the following statement when reached for comment on the news:

“In the off season the NWHLPA has been working hard to continue to drive the betterment of our professional athletes every day. This announcement halts our ability to finally have the best players on one stage, and unfortunately sets the Women’s Hockey game backward. With the powerful opportunity we have this year to drive unprecedented growth, this new fragmentation will only slow that growth.”

While examining Mrs. Battaglino’s statement here, we have to agree with her assessment on this situation. While yesterday, May 1st, marked the official end of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) as they closed their doors, the NWHL acted swiftly and added two more teams to their league with the prospects of a third team to make it an 8 team league when the initial announcement was made in an effort to give more women an opportunity to play professionally in the NWHL.

Also, look at the growth of Women’s hockey in these last two years specifically. From the US Olympic Hockey Team winning the gold medal against Team Canada, to setting a US attendance record for a Women’s hockey game at the NWHL All Star Game in Nashville, to having Kendall Coyne Schofield becoming the first woman to participate in the NHL All Star Skills Competition. These women have made great gains only to halt it’s momentum to a near dead halt, and it’s a damn shame.

Do these women deserve to play professionally, and make a living wage doing so? Oh hell yes they do. They deserve it, and most importantly they’ve earned it, but what they are doing does not seem like the way to go about it. While we don’t have the answers here ourselves, we do believe that there has to be a better way to accomplish the ultimate goal, and that is to have the ultimate professional Women’s hockey league that brings great stability and a long term viable option for women to play the game.

We do know that one player has spoken out against the #ForTheGame movement as reported by The Ice Garden, and that is Boston Pride player Kaleigh Fratkin.

We will have more here on TXHT as everything unfolds, but to quote our Connecticut Whale writer Christopher Vasilas ( @shaggy901516 ):

“We’re definitely at the crossroads, every decision by the league and players is gonna have huge impact on future generations”

Round 2 Game 4 Recap – St. Louis Blues v. Dallas Stars

St. Louis Blues v. Dallas Stars

    STL Leads 2-1

    Game Recap:

The St. Louis Blues come into Game 4 looking to take home ice away from the Dallas Stars again, and extend their series lead. However, it would be the Stars who would start the game aggressively and get the first five shots on goal, but it would be a Jason Dickinson high sticking penalty that would give the Blues the powerplay and 18 seconds into the powerplay Vladimir Tarasenko would score his fifth of the playoffs to give the Blues an early 1-0 lead. Dickinson would make it up to his team though as he would get the puck past Jordan Binnington to tie the game at one a piece. Then in the final 3 minutes of the first period, Tyler Bozak would take an ill advised offensive zone penalty which would lead to Jason Spezza blasting a slapshot past a screened Binnington to give the Stars a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

In the second period the Stars would continue their dominate play from the first period as John Klingberg would score to make it 3-1 for Dallas off of a very beautiful wrister that would get past Binnington who has looked spectacular while under seige during this game so far. Then later in the period the Stars would continue their dominating play as Roope Hintz would score his fifth of the playoffs as the Stars head into the second intermission leading 4-1.

Going into the third period the St. Louis Blues played with a lot more urgency and would outshoot the Dallas Stars 12-5 in the period, but Ben Bishop would stand tall stopping all but one shot to guide the Stars to a 4-2 victory and even the series at two a piece.

  • New York Islanders vs Carolina Hurricanes – Round 2 – Game 3 Recap

New York Islanders vs Carolina Hurricanes – Round 2 – Game 3 Recap

    Game Recap:

Carolina came out of the gate fast and furious. Taking a quick lead in the first and dictating a lot of the actions in period one. With the exception of a bad penalty in which the Islanders Devon Toews would get his first of the playoffs, it was a spotless period for the Hurricanes.

The second period saw a lot of back and forth action with each team getting a goal and a penalty. But the Islanders couldn’t find the extra gas to pull away in this one. Which played right into Carolina’s game plan.

The third period Captain clutch Justin Williams would come through and Teuvo Teravainen, along with Sebastian Aho would come through with goals of their own to make it 5-2 and a 3-0 series lead.

  • Boston Bruins vs Columbus Blue Jackets – Round 2 – Game 3 Recap

Boston Bruins vs Columbus Blue Jackets – Round 2 – Game 3 Recap

    Game Recap:

Bruins came to play in the first period of game three. Throwing the body around and clogging up the neutral zone, it looked like we’d see a classic Bruins game. But then tides changed with about 7 minutes to go in the 1st period. Columbus started to control play and throw their body around. With a few minutes left Boone Jenner beamed down the ice and undressed the Bruins defense and scored to give the Jackets a 1-0 heading into the intermission.

Columbus picked right back up where they left off in the 1st period. Controlling the play and throwing their weight around. Matt Duchene added his 5th on the powerplay on a costly penalty by Brad Marchand. But with forty seconds to go in the 2nd period DeBrusk would come right up the middle and look to score. But the Ref waived the play dead and called it no goal. Refs decided to go upstairs to make sure and Goal-Review board called it a goal on a continuation.

The third period would bring some serious pressure from the Bruins but they couldn’t beat Sergei Bobrovsky, as the Blue Jackets held on for a 2-1 series lead.

St. Louis Blues v. Dallas Stars

    Series Tied 1-1

Game Recap (Provided by @aew328123 Aryan):

The St. Louis Blues came out with a much faster start than in Game 2, with Jaden Schwartz opening the scoring. While Alexander Radulov was able to tie the game at 1 for the Dallas Stars on a great play on the power play, the Blues seemed like they were in control of the game.

The second period brought more of the same, but the tide seemed to be tilting in Dallas’s favor, but the Blues’ third line had an amazing shift, with great plays by Vince Dunn and Robert Thomas to set up an easy tap in for Tyler Bozak.

The fireworks really started in the third, with teams trading quick goals. Andrew Cogliano scored to tie the game at 2, but Alex Pietrangelo followed that up with another goal to give the Blues a late 3-2 lead. However, Alex giveth, Alex taketh away as a poor clearing attempt directly set up Dallas’s third goal. Fortunately Pat Maroon knocked down featherweight Esa Lindell, and sniped the game winning goal. Game 4 is slated for Wednesday at 930 PM eastern in Dallas.

    Game Recap:

Bruins came to play in the first period of game two. Controlling the majority of possession and capitalizing on their only powerplay opportunity courtesy of Matt Grzelcyk 1st of the playoffs.

Columbus jumped right back into the mix courtesy of Artemi Panarin who scored twice in the 2nd frame, while David Pastrnak scored for Boston in between the two Panarin goals.

The third period would bring some back and forth play but no goals. Just back and forth which would lead us to overtime again for the 2nd period.

  • TXHT Post Mortem – A Caps Fan’s Point of View

TXHT Post Mortem – A Caps Fan’s Point of View

With the Washington Capitals 2018-19 season over, there are a lot of opinions about the team, but we here at TXHT look to our good friend John Chick who wrote an amazing Post Mortem to this season.

John, the floor is yours good sir…

    Here’s my post-mortem, for what it’s worth:

    1. Despite the sudden crowning of Barry Trotz as hockey’s version of Bill Belichick, he was one game away from being fired last year as the Caps coach. Reirden’s Caps won their division, so if it’s time to fire Reirden, then John Cooper in Tampa should’ve already been fired, along with Vegas’ coach. I loved Trotz, but let’s do a little deeper analysis than “Fire the Coach”, which seems to be the social media norm.

    2. For whatever reason, the Caps forgot how to win in the playoffs, choosing the ‘fancy’ goals over the dirty goals. Carolina had 3 players funneling to the net on every shot. The Caps usually chose not to shoot, and when they did, they rarely had more than one player anywhere near the net.

    3. The Caps also reverted to the old form of having the stars perform well enough to win, and the rest of the team serving as spectators. They won the Cup last year specifically because all four lines contributed, so opponents couldn’t just concern themselves with shutting down the first line.

    4. Losing Kempny was big. What I liked about him most is that he wouldn’t hesitate to shoot, so while he wasn’t at the same level as Nate Schmidt, he was equivalent. Nick Jensen doesn’t shoot, so we essentially have one defenseman who can (or more importantly)/will shoot. Having a big shot like Carlson isn’t even necessary – just put it on net.

    5. The slingshot – doesn’t work. They also used to place Oshie or someone else right in the slot on the PP which gave it another wrinkle and made the defense lay off Ovie. No idea why they tried to fix something that wasn’t broken.

    6. And finally – The Caps are the 2018 Stanley Cup Champions – something I thought I’d never live to see. They get a pass from me for getting bounced in the first round by what turned out to be a good team.

John is a good friend of Michael, Aryan, and Chris.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets vs Boston Bruins – Round 2 – Game 1 Recap

Columbus Blue Jackets vs Boston Bruins – Round 2 – Game 1 Recap

    Game Recap:

Bruins came to play in the first period outshooting Columbus 14-4 and killing off two Blue Jacket Powerplays and scoring what seemingly was a goal Sergei Bobrovsky would love to have back to complete an almost perfect 1st period on home ice. Columbus looks a step behind which could be a case of rust – after having such a long layoff.

Columbus took a step forward in the second period taking their game up a notch and controlling most of the play. Upping their physicality and getting into the face of Rask.

The third period would bring some real excitement with the Blue Jackets making an epic comeback in a matter of 13 seconds to take a 2-1 lead into the last 5 minutes of the period. That’s where Boston native Charlie Coyle would take over this game, Scoring with  5 minutes left to tie the game and take it to overtime.

The overtime would be all Boston and once again Charlie Coyle would seal the deal 5 minutes into the overtime period and give the Bruins  1-0 lead in the best of seven series.
