Minnesota Whitecaps (1-0-0 2pts) v. Toronto Six (0-1-0 0pts)
Game Recap:
Entering Day Two of the NWHL Bubble season the Minnesota Whitecaps look to continue their winning ways while the Toronto Six look to get a few firsts in their young NWHL history. Going into the first period the Whitecaps would put themselves into penalty problems as they would give the Six a total of four powerplays in the first twenty minutes of action, and two of those powerplays would result in goals for the Six as Lindsay Eastwood would not only score her first career NWHL goal, but the first goal in Six franchise history to take the 1-0 lead. Then two minutes later while at even strength Mikyla Grant-Mentis would strike for her first of the season, and then on their third powerplay opportunity Breanne Wilson-Bennett would score her first career NWHL goal to give the Six the commanding 3-0 lead. This powerful start by the Six would chase Amanda Leveille from the crease after giving up 3 goals on 8 shots in 14:16 played, and bringing in Allie Morse for her first taste of NWHL action this season. However, after the goalie change, the Whitecaps would come to life as they would force a couple powerplays their way and it would be Sydney Baldwin netting her first of the season to get Minnesota get on the board.
Coming into the second period, Leveille would return between the pipes for the Whitecaps, and for the most part of this period would be much more tightly played than the first, but both teams would still take one too many penalties in this one. As for scoring, we would see the Six score early on while on the powerplay as Wilson-Bennett would net her second of the game, then with 92 seconds left in the period Taylor Woods would score her first goal as a member of the Six to give them the 5-1 lead. However, the Pride would come alive and pounce on the Six in the final 61 seconds as Haylea Schmid and Haley Mack both would score and bring Boston within two before the end of the second period.
Then in the third period it would be the Whitecaps continuing their comeback effort as they would score 13 minutes into the period while shorthanded as Audra Richards would not only score the shorty, but would also draw a penalty to give the Whitecaps the powerplay opportunity. On this powerplay it would be Meaghan Pezon scoring to tie the game at five and send it to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Six would control most of the zone time, and Breanne Wilson Bennett would come close to finishing the hat trick, but would fall short and lead to the shootout. In the shootout it would be Haley Mack scoring in the fifth round to complete the comeback effort and give the Whitecaps the 6-5 victory. For Toronto, this was a heartbreaker, but a really great building block for them as this season continues throughout the week.
